Chapter 4: The Keep's Threshold
The trees leaned apart and the party stepped through into open air. The change was abrupt. One stride back was the close, sweating press of the sap forest. The next stride put them in a courtyard the size of a village square, paved in cracked stone, with moss filling every joint.
The keep rose above them. Black stone, unbroken by a single window until the third storey, where narrow slits stared out like eyeholes in a skull. The gate stood open at the top of a short flight of steps, heavy iron valves rusted partway and no longer meeting. A wind moved through the courtyard that smelled of dust and old sex, the two braided together so completely they might have been one thing.
Kaelen stopped at the edge of the paving. He had cleaned most of the sap off himself, but dark stains still marked his tunic and his face had the careful blankness of a man who had decided not to think about the last hour. He looked up at the keep, then at the open gate.
"That's where she is," he said.
"Yes," Melara said.
Lyra was already moving, light-footed across the moss, a dagger loose in her hand. She paused at the foot of the steps and crouched, running a fingertip over the stone. Dark residue, old and tacky, came away on her glove. She sniffed it, then wiped it on the hem of her tunic.
"Sap," she said. "It's everywhere. On the steps, the posts, the hinges." She looked back at them. "She's been here a long time, and she didn't leave."
Melara's familiar stirred against her thigh. It had been quiet since the forest, sated and tucked close, but now it woke with a slow, insistent pulse that matched something in the ground. She pressed a hand to her breeches to steady it. The stone under her boots was vibrating. Faint, but there. A rhythm, slow and deep, like a heartbeat heard through a wall.
"Do you feel that?" she asked.
Lyra's head tilted. "Feel what?"
"The stone. It's pulsing."
Lyra put her palm flat to the step and held it there. After a moment she shook her head. "Nothing. But I wasn't born standing in this much magic." She straightened. "You're saying it's coming from inside."
Melara nodded. She crossed the courtyard to the foot of the steps, and the vibration grew clearer with every stride, until it ran up the soles of her boots and settled in her chest. Her cock stiffened further at each pulse. The rhythm was not random. It was slow, patient, the tempo of something breathing in its sleep.
Kaelen came up beside her, axe held loose across his body. "Is it a trap?"
"Probably," Lyra said.
"I mean a trap that kills you."
"Those are the only kind she'd leave." Melara climbed the first step. "But the way through is down. She wants us to find her, or she'd have closed the gate."
She was halfway up the steps before she realized the moss under her boots was not moss. It was a thinner, greener thing, faintly luminous, and it grew in patterns that repeated at exact intervals. She stopped and looked at it more closely. The patterns were spirals, opening one into the next, circling a single point. The point was the gate.
"It knows us," she murmured. "It knows we're here."
Lyra's voice came from behind her, low and dry. "Does it know what you're doing with your hand?"
Melara snatched her hand off her own thigh. Her face burned. The familiar had not settled; it was pressing insistently against the seam of her breeches, wet at the tip, and she had unconsciously been stroking it through the cloth. She forced her arm to her side.
"Shut up," she said.
Lyra smiled. She walked past Melara and through the gate without hesitation, stepping over the threshold like a woman entering a tavern. Inside, the dark was absolute for three steps, then opened into a vaulted hall. Pale light filtered through cracks in the stone overhead, enough to see by.
The floor was bare stone, swept clean. A staircase stood at the far end, descending into a darkness that swallowed the light a few steps in. The pulsing was stronger here, so clear now that Melara felt it in her teeth, and it led down.
Kaelen entered last, ducking under the gate. The iron swung slightly behind him, creaking on rusted hinges, but did not close. He watched it, frowning.
"It wants us to go down," he said. "It's not even pretending otherwise."
"Then we go down," Lyra said, and took the first step onto the staircase.
Melara followed. The air thickened as they descended, warm and close, and the smell of old sex grew until it coated the back of her throat. The steps were worn smooth in the middle from years of use, and the walls beside the stair glistened with a thin residue. She touched it. Sap. Fresh enough to smear between her fingers.
The pulse was a heartbeat now, not just a vibration. It came up from below slow and heavy, through the stone, through the soles of her boots, and each beat made her familiar twitch against her thigh as if answering a call it recognized.
The stairs ended in a corridor of rough stone, and the air was hot with the breath of many bodies. A low sound hung in that dark: moans, muffled by distance and stone, a chorus of small, repeated noises that never quite resolved into words.
Torches burned along the walls in iron sconces. The corridor was lined with doors, heavy oak with small barred windows set at face height. Lyra stopped at the first and peered through. Her jaw tightened.
"Melara," she said. "Come look."
Melara pushed up beside her and looked through the bars. The cell beyond was clean and warm, lit by a candle, and it was fitted with a stone bench and a straw pallet. On the pallet, a human woman lay on her back, pale and slick with sweat, legs spread. Her hips kept rolling in a slow rhythm against empty air, and from her mouth came an endless thin whimpering. Her eyes were open and unfocused. She was being fucked by nothing that Melara could see, her cunt clenching wetly around an invisible cock.
"Kaelen," Melara said. "Check the others."
He moved down the line of doors and looked through each window, then came back with his face grim. "All the same. Men and women, all races. Dwarves, elves, half-orcs. Every one of them's being fucked by something we can't see. Or they're sucking something. One of them's on his knees with his mouth open and he won't stop swallowing."
The corridor split ahead. A sign carved into the stone above the fork had two words, each with an arrow. Receivers. Givers. The arrow for Receivers pointed left, and the moans from that direction were louder, more numerous, a sound like a packed hall.
Lyra had already turned left. Melara followed, and the corridor opened into a chamber the size of a barn.
This was the biggest section, just as the sign said. Rows of stone cells lined the walls, two-storeys high, with galleries and iron ladders between them. Each cell had a round opening set into its door at waist height, about the size of a fist at rest, and light spilled from the openings into the walkway. The air was thick with precum and sweat and the feral musk of people who had been driven far past shame. But what held them were the sounds: wet, rhythmic sucking, moaning, and now, from the cells and all around them, the dim grinding of hips and the spank of flesh.
In the nearest door's opening, an erection was protruding. It was thick and pale, bobbing slowly, blindly, dripping pre-cum onto the stone floor. A second cell further down showed a dark-skinned cock, veined like knotted rope, straining through its ring. A third, a thick short one slick with its own spit. All along the walkway, cocks pushed through openings like a field of roots forced through gaps, twitching red against the grey stone.
"They don't have bodies," Lyra said. She was staring at the nearest one. "Just the cock. It's through a ring and it's attached to nothing."
Melara's own familiar thumped hard against her thigh. She felt the pull in her gut, low and deep, the same pull she'd felt from the trees earlier but sharper now, more insistent.
"It's a gloryhole," she said. "Enchanted. Linked."
"Linked to what?"
"To another one somewhere else. Somewhere far away." She stepped closer to the nearest cell. The erection inside the ring twitched as she approached, and a drop of pre-cum fell. She touched the stone around the opening. The magic hummed through her palm, familiar. Blue mage work, clean and efficient and utterly without scruple. "Someone put their cock in a ring in some tavern in some city, and it comes through here. Into this cell. And those people in there," she nodded at the door, "they're paid to take care of it."
"Paid," Kaelen repeated.
"The other mage sells the ring. The chain. Whatever you want to call it. Man in a brothel in Redwater wants to fuck without the scandal, he pays her fee, slips through the ring, and here a slave milks him dry." Melara's voice came out steady. "She's made a business of it. A network. The ring goes in anywhere in the country and finds a mouth or a cunt in one of these cells."
Lyra crouched and looked through the bottom of the nearest door, low. "She's not paid. Look at her eyes." The woman behind the door was moaning, reaching for a cock that was not there, hips humping empty air in a desperate rhythm. Her hands were scratched raw on the stone floor. "She's been here years. That's not a job. That's a sentence."
Melara's familiar pushed so hard against her breeches that she gasped. The tip was wet through the cloth, and her hand went to it without thinking, pressing, and the magic in the ring throbbed in answer, as if it recognized its own kind. The cock in the opening bobbed toward her hand.
"Stop that," Lyra said, quiet.
Melara took her hand away. Her mouth was dry, and a long ache had settled in her groin, a patient ache she knew well. She turned to the other fork.
"Let's see the Givers."
The corridor opposite was shorter and ended in a second chamber, smaller than the first but hung with more torches. Here the cells were arranged around a central well, and each door had the same waist-high opening. But the sounds were different. No moaning from behind these doors. No rhythm of pleasure. Instead, a low, steady hum of endured strain, and the sharp slap of flesh against stone.
The first opening showed a knot of cock, thick and purple, forced through the ring from the inside. It was hard, red, leaking. Behind the door, hidden in shadow, a man grunted with effort, his whole body straining to push his cock through the hole. It was not for his pleasure. The ring held him fast. He could not pull it back, could not retreat. He was just a cock on a wall, and Melara understood.
"The Givers produce," she said. "They have to get hard and push themselves through. And then they stay there." She stepped closer. "Until someone on the other side uses them."
Kaelen's voice was rough. "Uses them how?"
"How do you think?" Lyra said.
She was looking at another door. Behind this one, a woman's breath was coming in ragged, broken sobs, and her cock, long and dark, was pegged through the ring at full length, dripping onto the floor.
Melara could feel the magic humming through every opening in this chamber, a vast web folded into the stone. She pressed her palm flat against the wall and let the current run up her arm. It all led somewhere, down and inward, to a heart.
"She built this," Melara said. "Every ring in the country feeds a slave here, and every slave here feeds her." She looked up at the ceiling, where the pulse was strongest. "She's the heart. She's down there," she said, pointing at the floor, and the stone under her feet throbbed like a drum. "And the stairs to her are under this chamber. She built the whole thing around herself."
