Chapter 6: The Shower Revelation
The click of the bathroom door locking sounded absurdly final. A barricade against the world, against Mark, against the lingering phantom pressure on my mouth. But not against this.
The shower hissed to life, blasting steam that fogged the cold marble and steel. I shed Mark’s borrowed clothes—the damp henley, the pooling sweatpants—letting them fall to the floor in a heap. The pink thong, a flimsy scrap of lace, followed. Naked, the air raised fresh goosebumps. I avoided the mirror, stepping into the scalding spray.
The water was a punishment and a baptism. It sluiced over my head, heavier, denser with the weight of the long, soaked hair clinging to my back and shoulders. I used Mark’s expensive citrus soap, scrubbing at the chlorine smell, at the memory of Jasmine’s eyes on my skin. My hands moved over unfamiliar topography. The soap slid easily over the pronounced, sloping curves of my breasts, their weight substantial in my palms, the nipples tight and sensitive under my thumbs. My stomach was a concave dip, ribs faintly visible, leading to the sudden, dramatic flair of my hips. The lather ran down the narrow channel of my spine and into the full, rounded swell of my ass. Every pass of my hands was a recon mission in a foreign land. The muscles in my arms and legs were long, lean strands where I was used to bulk. My entire frame felt precariously assembled, like a tall vase on a narrow base.
I turned off the water. The silence was immediate, broken only by the drip from my hair onto my shoulders. A thick towel, impossibly soft, abraded my skin as I dried. Patting was useless; the fabric caught on every curve, dragging across the sensitive peaks of my breasts, snagging on the damp thatch of blonde curls between my legs—lighter, finer than my own had been.
The mirror was a wall of fog. I stared at the blurred silhouette within it—a suggestion of a head, shoulders, a tapering waist. My hand, small and fine-boned with its chipped pink polish, rose and wiped a clearing.
Blue eyes, huge and drowning in the pale face of a stranger, stared back. Her lips—my lips—were swollen-looking, parted in slight shock. Water-darkened blonde hair clung in rivulets to her neck, her collarbones, trailing over the tops of her breasts. I watched a single droplet trace a path from the hollow of my throat, skating over the stark ridge of a clavicle, before disappearing into the deep crease between them.
My own gaze held mine. Justin’s consciousness, a solid, furious knot behind those alien eyes.
Slowly, my trembling hand lifted from the towel and hovered in the air. It descended to rest on the flat plane of my stomach. The skin was cool, soft. I dragged my fingertips upward, over my ribs, until the heel of my palm settled under the heavy, hanging weight of my left breast. I lifted it. The sensation was profoundly unsettling—a full, yielding weight, the nipple tightening against my cold palm. A faint, electric jolt skittered down into my belly. I dropped my hand as if burned.
But the compulsion was a tightening screw. My eyes stayed locked on my reflection as my hand traveled down again, over the quivering flat of my stomach, past the sharp V of my hips, into the coarse, damp curl of pubic hair.
I stopped breathing.
My fingertips brushed the outer lips. They were softer than I’d imagined, plush. I traced a hesitant line downward. The sensation was not localized. It sparked across my entire nervous system, a low-voltage shock that made my thighs tense. A strange, warm pooling began low in my belly, utterly different from any arousal I’d ever known as a man. This was a deep, internal liquefaction.
I probed deeper, parting folds that were mystifying in their architecture. Slippery from the shower, I found the opening, tighter than any mental model I possessed. The contact was a lightning strike. A sharp, involuntary gasp tore from my throat—that higher, breathy voice echoing in the tiled room. My hips gave a tiny, reflexive jerk forward into my own touch. Pleasure, pure and undiluted and terrifying, radiated out in warm, concentric waves. It was nothing like the focused, urgent pressure of male arousal. This was a spreading stain, a surrender.
This was her body responding. And I was trapped inside, a passenger feeling every devastating mile.
A hard, rapid knock at the door shattered the moment.
“Justin?” Mark’s voice, muffled but urgent, came through the wood. “You’ve been in there forty minutes. You okay?”
I snatched my hand back, clutching the towel to my chest. My heart was a frantic drum against my ribs. Shame, hotter than the shower, flooded me. I had been… investigating. While he was out there, dealing with the fallout of my stupid, impulsive kiss.
“Yeah,” I called out, my voice cracking. “Fine. Just… coming out.”
I moved on autopilot. I pulled on the clean clothes left on the vanity: a simple black XS tank top that stretched taut over my breasts, leaving my arms and shoulders bare, and tiny gray shorts that barely covered the curve of my ass. A new thong, another lace frontier, was an afterthought. No bra. The tank provided negligible support; I felt every slight shift, every jarring step, translated into a soft, persistent bounce.
I looked at the door. The silence from the other side felt heavy, waiting.
I didn’t want to face him with the ghost of my own fingers between my legs, with the taste of him still on my lips. I needed to obliterate the distance. I needed him to see what I was, in all its horrifying, undeniable reality. Not Sabrina. Not his pretend girlfriend. But his friend, trapped in this.
My hand, still trembling, went to the lock. I turned it.
I pulled the door open and stepped back into the dim light of the guest room.
Mark was leaning against the opposite wall, arms crossed. He’d changed into a fresh t-shirt and sweatpants. His eyes, dark with concern, lifted to meet mine.
Then they traveled down.
He froze. His gaze wasn’t like Jasmine’s. There was no hunger, no calculation. It was a slow, dawning comprehension, edged with something like pain. He took in the tank top, the shorts, the bare legs, the vulnerable line of my throat. He saw the alien shape of me, dressed but fundamentally exposed.
“I can’t do this,” I whispered, the words raw.
“Do what?” he asked quietly, not moving from the wall.
“This… charade. Living in this… this thing.” My gesture encompassed my body. “You saw her. Jasmine. She just sees a body. You see me. But you also see this. Don’t you?”
He pushed off the wall, taking a single step into the room. “I see my best friend in a nightmare.”
“It’s not a nightmare, Mark. It’s real. This is real.” My voice rose, tinged with hysteria. I needed him to understand the tactile horror of it. “I have to shave my legs now. My center of gravity is four inches lower. I get cold faster. Everything jiggles. Everything is soft. And when I…” I choked, the memory of the bathroom a fresh burn. “When I touch myself, it doesn’t feel like me. It feels like I’m violating someone else’s wiring and getting a reward for it.”
He was staring at me, his jaw tight. “Justin…”
“Don’t ‘Justin’ me!” I took a step toward him, my small bare feet silent on the plush carpet. “You kissed me out there. Or I kissed you. Whatever. It was a lie for her. But my… these…” I gestured helplessly at my chest. “They didn’t know it was a lie. My pulse didn’t know. Nothing in this fucking body knows what’s real anymore!”
I was standing right in front of him now, having to crane my neck. The physical disparity had never felt more vast, more cruel. He was my anchor, my oldest friend, a monument of my old life. I was a ghost in a teenaged doll.
“What do you want me to do?” he asked, his voice gravelly. “What do you need?”
I didn’t know. The need was a formless, desperate scream in my skull.
So I showed him.
I reached for the hem of the tank top and pulled it up and over my head in one swift, decisive motion. I let it fall to the floor. The cool air hit my bare skin, my breasts lifting with the motion before settling back into their heavy, pendulous shape. I hooked my thumbs into the waistband of the shorts and the thong beneath and pushed them down my hips, stepping out of the puddle of fabric.
I stood naked before him, shivering, utterly exposed.
“I need you to see,” I said, my voice barely audible. “Not Sabrina.Me. This is the cage. Look at it.”
His eyes didn’t devour me. They scanned, clinical, pained. They took in the stark reality of my new form—the vulnerability, the shocking feminine lines, the piercing, undeniable youth of it. He saw the friend he’d known for twenty years, screaming behind the blue eyes.
He didn’t move. A muscle ticked in his jaw. “I see you,” he said finally, the words strained.
It wasn’t enough. The chasm was still there, filled with steam and chlorine and the memory of a staged kiss. The logic was obliterated by a tidal wave of sheer, screaming need for connection, for proof that he still existed somewhere.
I closed the last inch between us. My bare skin touched the soft cotton of his t-shirt. I placed my palms flat on his chest. I could feel the mighty, slow thud of his heart.
“Then prove it,” I whispered, and I dragged him down by his shirt and kissed him again.
This was not a performance.
This was a collision.
My mouth was desperate, searching. His was rigid with shock for one second, two. Then a low groan vibrated in his chest, and his hands came up—not to push me away, not to pull me closer, but to grip my bare shoulders, holding me in place as if I might fracture. His lips moved against mine, a hesitant, shocking reciprocity. The stubble around his mouth scratched the impossibly soft skin around my lips. The taste of him was different without the pool water—spearmint toothpaste and something fundamentally, essentially Mark.
My mind shattered into static and sensation. The hard wall of his body against my soft, yielding one. The crush of my breasts against the solid plane of his chest. The dizzying scale of him, enveloping me. One of his large hands slid from my shoulder down the pronounced dip of my spine, coming to rest on the bare, full curve of my ass. His fingers splayed, gripping almost roughly. The contact was a brand, a claim of reality.
I made a sound into his mouth—a choked, feminine whimper that horrified part of me and electrified the rest.
He broke the kiss suddenly, tearing his mouth from mine. He was breathing hard, his forehead resting against mine, his eyes squeezed shut. His hands were still on my bare skin, burning.
“Justin,” he gasped, my name a prayer and a curse.
We stood there in the dim light, locked together, the fiction we’d built evaporating in the heat of a terrible, shared truth. The path back was gone. All that remained was the precipice we now stood upon, and the terrifying, empty air ahead.
