Chapter 3: Empty Grasp
Willow stepped into the room, her professional mask firmly in place, but Gabby’s words hung in the air, a heavy, unspoken question. The sterile scent of antiseptic stung her nose as she approached the bed. “I was wondering when you’d be back,” Gabby said, her voice casual but laced with something sharper. Was it a genuine inquiry or a challenge? Willow couldn’t tell, and that unnerved her. “How are you feeling?” she asked, keeping her tone neutral, though her fingers tightened around the clipboard she carried.
Gabby shrugged, her eyes flickering down to the bandages covering her groin. “Sore. And… incomplete. Like someone stole the punchline to my favorite joke.” She managed a weak smile, but Willow could see the pain lurking beneath the surface, raw and unrelenting. Her hands twitched on the bedsheet, fingers curling into fists before relaxing again, as if she were fighting the urge to tear something apart.
Willow pulled up a chair, her movements deliberate, trying to project an air of calm authority. The metal legs scraped against the floor, the sound grating in the otherwise quiet room. “The pain is to be expected. We’ll keep you on a regular dose of pain medication.” She paused, her gaze softening slightly. “As for the… other feelings, those will take time to process.” She said it like it was a fact, something clinical and manageable, but the way Gabby’s jaw tightened told her it wasn’t that simple.
Gabby snorted, a bitter sound that echoed off the stark walls. “Process? You mean like, accept that my dick is gone forever and I’m now officially a neutered freak?” She ran a hand through her choppy pink hair, her frustration evident in the way her fingers tugged at the strands. “Yeah, I’ll get right on that,” she added, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Her green eyes narrowed, challenging Willow to say something, anything, that could make this feel less like a nightmare.
Willow hesitated, her professional composure wavering for the first time. She wasn’t trained to deal with this kind of emotional fallout; she was a surgeon, not a therapist. But she couldn’t just leave Gabby to wallow in her despair, not when the pain in her eyes was so palpable. “It’s okay to grieve,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “It’s a significant loss.” The words felt inadequate, hollow even, but they were all she had.
Gabby’s eyes flashed with anger, her lips curling into a sneer. “Grieve? Doc, I’m not grieving a dead pet. I’m grieving a part of my body, a part of my identity!” Her voice cracked on the last word, and she looked away, her chest rising and falling rapidly. “It’s like someone ripped out a piece of my soul,” she muttered, her voice barely audible. Then, quieter still, she added, “And now I don’t even know how to get off anymore.”
Willow’s cheeks flushed, her gaze darting away from Gabby’s as the air between them grew thick with tension. The question hung there, raw and intimate, and Willow felt utterly unprepared to answer it. “We can explore different options,” she said, her voice strained as she forced the words out. “There are… other ways to experience pleasure.” She hated how clinical it sounded, how detached, but she didn’t know how else to say it.
Gabby raised an eyebrow, a mischievous glint returning to her eyes despite the heaviness of the moment. “Oh, really? Enlighten me, Doc. What do you suggest? A vibrator? A strap-on?” Her voice was light, almost teasing, but there was an edge to it that made Willow’s stomach twist. “Because last time I checked, those things weren’t exactly designed for someone with my… unique anatomy.” She gestured vaguely toward the bandages, her lips quirking into a wry smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
Willow stood up abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor with a sharp, jarring sound. “I think we’re getting off track,” she said, her voice sharper than she intended. “My job is to ensure your physical recovery, not to provide you with sexual advice.” She regretted the words as soon as they left her mouth, but it was too late to take them back. Gabby’s expression shifted, the teasing glint fading into something darker.
Gabby laughed, a harsh, brittle sound that filled the room. “Relax, Doc. I’m just kidding. Trying to lighten the mood, you know? God knows someone has to.” She sighed, her gaze drifting to the window where the late afternoon sunlight filtered through the blinds. “But seriously, what am I supposed to do? I feel like a broken toy.” Her voice cracked on the last word, and she swallowed hard, her hands clenching the sheets again.
As Willow turned to leave, Gabby impulsively reached out and grabbed her hand. “Wait,” she said, her voice pleading. “Don’t go. I… I don’t want to be alone with this.” Willow hesitated, her hand tensing beneath Gabby’s touch. She looked down at Gabby, her eyes filled with a mixture of pain and vulnerability that made her chest ache. For a moment, she considered pulling away, but something in Gabby’s expression stopped her.
Willow sat back down, her body stiff and awkward as she tried to find her balance on the edge of the chair. Gabby’s touch was electrifying, sending shivers down her spine despite the sterile setting. “What do you want me to do?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper, as if speaking too loudly might shatter the fragile moment between them.
Gabby looked at her, her eyes searching Willow’s face for something—comfort, understanding, maybe even hope. “Just… talk to me,” she said, her voice softer now, almost pleading. “Tell me something that will make me forget about all this, even for a little while.” Willow hesitated, her mind racing as she tried to think of something, anything, that could ease Gabby’s pain. What could she possibly offer that would make a difference?
She thought about her own scars, the ones she kept hidden beneath her professional facade. She thought about the loneliness, the self-doubt, the constant pressure to succeed. And she realized that maybe, just maybe, she had something to offer after all. Leaning closer, Willow whispered, “Did you know that the human clitoris has more nerve endings than a penis? It’s true. I read it in a book.” The words felt absurd, almost ridiculous, but they were all she had.
Gabby’s eyes widened, a slow smile spreading across her face as she processed Willow’s words. “Is that so, Doc?” she said, her voice laced with amusement and something else—something that made Willow’s pulse quicken. “Well, maybe there’s hope for me yet.” Willow met her gaze, a flicker of something dangerous passing between them, something that neither of them could quite name. “Maybe,” Willow whispered back, her voice trembling slightly. “Maybe there is.”
Gabby shifted slightly, her fingers tightening around Willow’s hand. “So, Doc,” she began, a playful glint in her eyes, “you’re saying I should just… re-route the pleasure train?” Willow’s cheeks flushed, the warmth spreading down her neck as she tried to keep her composure. “I’m saying,” she replied, her voice steady but tinged with hesitation, “that the capacity for pleasure isn’t necessarily tied to one specific body part.” She hated how clinical the words sounded, how they flattened something so deeply personal into a sterile observation. Gabby’s grin widened, her thumb brushing lightly over Willow’s knuckles, and for a moment, the air between them felt charged with something unspoken.
Gabby chuckled, a warm, throaty sound that vibrated through Willow’s hand and sent a shiver up her arm. “You know, for a doctor, you’re awfully coy. Most of the girls I’ve been with would have jumped at the chance to give me a hands-on demonstration.” Willow’s breath hitched, her pulse quickening as she met Gabby’s gaze. “I’m not ‘most girls’,” she said, her voice barely a whisper, the words hanging in the air like a challenge. Gabby’s smile softened, her eyes searching Willow’s face for something—understanding, maybe, or just a crack in the professional armor. Willow felt exposed, vulnerable, and for the first time in years, she didn’t mind.
The door swung open abruptly, the sharp sound slicing through the tension like a knife. A nurse bustled in, her face flushed and apologetic as she clutched a clipboard to her chest. “Dr. Hayes, sorry to interrupt, but you have an emergency consult in the ER.” Willow exhaled slowly, the interruption both a relief and a disappointment she wasn’t ready to examine. “I’ll be right there,” she said, pulling her hand away from Gabby’s, the loss of contact leaving her skin oddly cold. She stood, smoothing her lab coat with a practiced motion, her mind already shifting to the next task.
As Willow turned to leave, Gabby reached out, her fingers brushing lightly against her arm. “Thanks, Doc,” she said, her voice soft but sincere. “For… everything.” Willow nodded, her throat tight with an emotion she couldn’t name. “Get some rest,” she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil churning inside her. She hurried out of the room, her footsteps echoing in the sterile hallway, leaving Gabby alone with her thoughts and the faint scent of antiseptic clinging to the air.
Once the door clicked shut, Gabby lay back against the pillows, her mind racing. The doctor’s words echoed in her head—re-route the pleasure train. It sounded so simple, so logical, but the reality felt anything but. She glanced down at the bandages, the stark white a glaring reminder of what she’d lost. A wave of frustration washed over her, hot and unrelenting, and she clenched her fists, the sheets bunching beneath her fingers. She needed release, something to quiet the storm in her head, even if it was just for a moment.
Driven by a desperate need, Gabby’s hand moved beneath the sheets, her fingers fumbling with the edges of the bandages. The sterile gauze felt rough against her skin, a constant reminder of the accident, of the fan that had malfunctioned and taken so much from her. Her breath hitched as she touched the short stump, the skin still raw and sensitive. There was no familiar length to grasp, no head to tease, only a mocking echo of what used to be. Her frustration mounted, building with each failed attempt to find a spark of pleasure.
Gabby’s fingers trembled as they brushed against the bandages, the sterile fabric rough against her skin. She pressed down, searching for the ghost of a sensation she once knew so well, but all she felt was a numb, hollow absence. “Come on,” she muttered under her breath, her voice tight with frustration. Her body ached with a need she couldn’t satisfy, a cruel joke played by her own anatomy. She clenched her jaw, willing herself to feel something, anything, but the stump remained stubbornly inert.
Tears blurred her vision as she stared at the ceiling, the fluorescent light casting a harsh glow over the room. “Why the fuck did this have to happen?” she whispered, her voice cracking. The ache in her chest was worse than the pain in her groin, a deep, gnawing emptiness she couldn’t shake. She clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms, as if physical pain could distract her from the emotional void. But nothing worked—nothing ever worked.
She shifted on the bed, wincing as the movement tugged at her stitches. The bandages were damp now, a sticky mess that clung to her skin, and the smell of antiseptic mixed with something faintly metallic. “Great,” she muttered, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Just fucking great.” She tried to adjust the bandages, but her fingers fumbled, and she let out a frustrated growl. Her body felt like a trap, a prison she couldn’t escape.
Her hand drifted lower, cupping her balls, the skin there still warm and sensitive. She squeezed gently, hoping for some kind of spark, but it wasn’t enough. It wasn’t her. She needed the weight, the fullness, the connection she’d lost. “God, I can’t do this,” she whispered, her voice breaking. She let her hand fall to her side, defeated, her chest heaving with shallow breaths. The room felt too small, the walls closing in around her.
She closed her eyes, trying to conjure up an image, a memory, anything that might help. Willow’s face flickered in her mind, the doctor’s calm, professional demeanor, the way her eyes had softened when she’d explained the anatomy of pleasure. For a moment, Gabby felt a flicker of hope, a tiny spark of possibility. But it was gone as quickly as it came, drowned out by the crushing weight of her reality.
“I’m not a clit girl,” she said aloud, her voice bitter. “I’m a dick girl. Or I was.” She laughed, a harsh, humorless sound that echoed in the empty room. Now she was nothing—a freak with a leaky stump and a body that didn’t feel like her own. She clenched her teeth, forcing back the tears that threatened to spill over. She wouldn’t cry. She couldn’t cry.
She let out a long, shuddering breath and let her head fall back against the pillow. “Fuck it,” she muttered, her voice hollow. She pulled her hand away from her groin, leaving the bandages untouched. There was no point in trying anymore. The ache in her body was matched only by the ache in her chest, a deep, unrelenting pain she didn’t know how to soothe.
The room was quiet, the only sound the steady hum of the fluorescent lights. Gabby stared at the ceiling, her mind racing, her body tense. She was so tired, so tired, but sleep felt like a distant dream. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the fan falling, felt the searing pain, heard Willow’s calm voice explaining what had happened. She couldn’t escape it—the memories, the loss, the emptiness.
She tossed and turned, the sheets tangling around her legs, the bandages chafing against her skin. The pain in her groin was constant, a dull, throbbing ache that refused to fade. She groaned, her body tense, her mind spiraling. “Just let me sleep,” she whispered, her voice desperate. But sleep didn’t come—not then, and not for hours.
When she finally drifted off, her dreams were fragmented, chaotic. She was running, searching, reaching for something she couldn’t quite grasp. Her body felt wrong, foreign, and she woke up gasping, her heart pounding in her chest. The room was dark, the air heavy with the scent of antiseptic. She reached for the call button, her finger hovering over the plastic surface.
She hesitated, her pride warring with her need for comfort. “Fuck it,” she muttered, pressing the button. The sound echoed in the silence, and she closed her eyes, waiting. A few minutes later, the door creaked open, and a nurse stepped inside, her face kind but tired.
“What can I do for you, Gabby?” she asked, her voice soft. Gabby swallowed hard, her cheeks burning with shame. “I think… my bandages are leaking,” she mumbled, avoiding the nurse’s gaze. The nurse nodded, her expression understanding. “I’ll get you some fresh ones,” she said. “And maybe something for the pain.”
As the nurse bustled around the room, Gabby lay back against the pillows, her body heavy with exhaustion. The leaky stump was a constant reminder of her brokenness, a symbol of everything she’d lost. She closed her eyes, her chest tight with emotion. “Will I ever feel whole again?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. The room was silent, the question hanging in the air, unanswered.
