Chapter 1: Jasmine at Dusk
The drive up to the Vance Estate always made Clara a little nervous. Not because of Lily, her best friend since freshman year, but because of Julian. Lily's dad. He was unfairly handsome for a man in his fifties, all salt-and-pepper hair and knowing eyes. Tonight, the air smelled like jasmine and money, a dizzying combination. Clara parked her Prius next to Julian's gleaming black Bentley and smoothed down her floral sundress. Casual, but cute. That was the goal.
The veranda was bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. Julian stood at the railing, a glass of wine in his hand. "Clara, so glad you could make it." His voice was a low rumble that vibrated right through her. He gestured to the matching glass already poured on the small table. "Lily's running late, something about a crisis at the animal shelter. She sends her apologies."
"No problem," Clara said, maybe a little too quickly. Alone with Julian. Again. She took a sip of the wine. It was a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, far fancier than the stuff she usually drank straight from the bottle. "Thank you for having me."
"The pleasure is all mine." Julian's eyes lingered on her a beat too long, making her skin prickle. He launched into a story about a recent charity golf tournament, but Clara found it hard to concentrate. His aftershave was intoxicating, a musky sandalwood that swirled around her. She laughed at the appropriate moments, nodding and making eye contact, but all she could think about was the way his tailored shirt stretched across his broad chest.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the manicured lawn, the conversation deepened. They talked about books, travel, and dreams deferred. Clara found herself opening up in a way she never had before, confessing her secret desire to quit teaching and open a flower shop. Julian listened intently, his gaze unwavering. When their fingers brushed as they both reached for the wine bottle, a jolt of electricity shot up her arm. Her heart hammered against her ribs. This felt dangerous. When Lily finally bounded onto the veranda, breathless and apologetic, Clara couldn't shake the feeling that she and Julian shared a secret, one that could destroy everything.
