Chapter 1: Introduction

Alex heaved the last box into the spare bedroom and wiped his brow. "Alright, kiddo, that should do it. We've got all your stuff in here. I'll let you arrange it however you like."

Jake flashed a grateful smile and scratched at the scruff on his jaw. "Thanks, Alex. I really appreciate this. My parents will be back in a year, and I'm pretty sure I'll be more settled by then."

A pang gripped Alex's heart, but he kept his smile firmly in place.

"No problem, Jake. I'm happy to help."

Jake nodded and poked around the room. "I'm just sorry for the inconvenience. My parents were supposed to be here for move-in day, but their job offer came up suddenly, so now I'm stuck living with you for a year."

Alex chuckled. "Hey, no worries. It's not like I have anything better to do. Besides, I've always liked you, kid. It'll be nice having you around."

Jake's shoulders relaxed. "Really?

You used to be my neighbor, right? I remember seeing you at the Thompson's house all the time when I was younger."

Alex nodded. "Yeah, I've known you since you were a young'un. Smart kid then, just like you are now. I remember your mom and dad telling me about all your accomplishments in school. What are you planning to study in college, if you don't mind me asking?"

Jake rubbed his nose self-consciously. "I'm still figuring it out, to be honest.

I'm thinking about majoring in psychology or sociology. I'm interested in learning about what makes people tick, and how societies and cultures shape their behavior."

Alex could sense the slight hesitation in Jake's voice and cocked his head. "Is there a particular reason why you're interested in those fields? You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, of course."

Jake fidgeted with the edge of his shirt, taking a moment to gather his thoughts. "I want to understand myself better, I guess.

I've always felt sort of...different, you know? I never quite fit in, even with my own family. And I want to help others who might be going through the same thing."

Alex tilted his head, his curiosity piqued. He sensed there was more to Jake's story, but he didn't want to push too hard. "Well, that's an admirable goal. You know, I had a friend back in college who majored in psychology, and she went on to get her PhD. She now works as a clinical psychologist, and she loves it.

She always said that understanding the human mind was the key to unlocking doors to empathy, compassion, and healing."

Jake's face brightened. That sounds amazing. I never thought of psychology as a career option. What did she like most about it?"

Alex thought back to his college days, recalling his conversations with Jessie about her passion for psychology. "She loved the challenge of it all. Understanding the human brain is a complex process, but it's the key to addressing mental health issues, relationships, and so much more.

She would often say, "Alex, if we can understand why people do what they do, we can help them change their behavior and make better choices."

Jake nodded, lost in thought. "That's true. I've always been fascinated by that idea, too. People are just so unpredictable sometimes."

Alex smiled. "Sometimes, but there's always a reason behind their actions.
