Chapter 9: The Departure
The docking bay swallowed sound. Its vast metal walls rose into shadow, disappearing into darkness where the amber warning lights could not reach, and the only noises were the distant thrum of environmental systems and the soft hiss of pressurized airlocks cycling. The Meridian Star sat in her berth like a patient animal, her hull scarred from years of transit, her cargo hatch open and waiting.
Jeff stood beside Commander Reilly on the marked staging area, his hands clasped behind his back in a posture that had become automatic. He had dressed with care this morning, his uniform immaculate, but the familiar discipline felt strange against the hollow ache settling in his chest. The workshop was over. The research had concluded. And now the people who had changed everything were leaving.
Marin came first, striding down the ramp with her small, wiry frame carrying the same confidence she had worn the day she arrived. But her grey-streaked head was tilted slightly, and when she reached them, she paused in a way that was unlike her.
"Captain," Reilly said.
Marin waved the title away. "Doctor will do, Commander. We're done with formalities, I think." She looked between them, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "I wanted to say... I've never felt more alive."
The words seemed to surprise even her. She let out a short laugh and shook her head. "I expected a cultural exchange. I did not expect to be reminded that I am a person with wants. Not just a captain with duties."
Jeff felt the tightness in his throat. "You were brave to ask for what you wanted, Captain."
"Marin," she corrected gently. Her hand came up, hesitated, and then clasped his shoulder with a firm grip. "You have a good heart, Ensign. And you, Commander." She turned to Reilly. "Your research will go far. I'll make sure the Federation council knows what you're doing out here. The Meridian Star is a civilian vessel, but I have contacts."
Reilly's dark eyes held a rare softness. "Thank you. Safe travels, Marin."
Marin nodded once, sharply, and then turned and walked up the ramp. She did not look back, and Jeff understood that was her way.
Kor Bork came next, his heavy footsteps echoing across the deck. The Tellarite engineer was dressed in his work clothes, a bag slung over one broad shoulder, and he approached with the same belligerent stride he had used everywhere.
Reilly met him with a raised eyebrow. "I trust your engineering work on Outpost 4 met your exacting standards?"
Kor grunted. "Your power couplings were underspec. I fixed them." He paused, and his bristly face shifted in what Jeff had learned was the closest thing a Tellarite came to warmth. "The research. It was acceptable."
Coming from Kor, Jeff suspected, that was a rave review.
"I'm glad we could debate," Reilly said.
Kor snorted. "You held your own. For a Federation scientist with no sense of proper argument." He turned to Jeff, and after a moment, he extended his hand. Jeff took it, and the Tellarite's grip was crushing, fierce and brief.
"You have good instincts, boy," Kor said. "Don't let anyone convince you otherwise."
Jeff managed a smile. "I won't."
Kor released his hand, then reached into his pocket and pulled out a small metal object, thrusting it at Reilly. "A comm frequency. Encrypted. If you ever want a real debate, or you need an engineer who won't ask questions, you call."
Reilly took the object, turning it over in her palm. "I will."
Kor grunted again, shouldered his bag, and stomped up the ramp without another word.
The docking bay fell quiet. Jeff watched the empty space where the Tellarite had stood, then glanced at the ramp. T'Lara and Sorvak were approaching together, their flowing civilian robes moving in gentle synchronization. They walked close, not touching, but the space between them was charged with an intimacy that had not existed when they arrived.
Sorvak's datapad was tucked under his arm, but his posture was different. Softer. The rigid line of his spine had eased, and his eyes, when they met Jeff's, held a depth that Jeff had never seen in the guarded Vulcan.
T'Lara reached them first, and for a long moment, she simply looked at Reilly and Jeff. Her dark eyes were luminous, and the intricate braid of her hair was slightly different today, looser somehow, as if the discipline of it had relaxed.
"Commander," she said. "Ensign."
Reilly inclined her head. "T'Lara. Sorvak. We will miss your insight."
Sorvak spoke, his voice carrying a weightit had lacked before. "Your research has given us a great deal to consider. We will take it back to Vulcan with us." He paused, and a faint, nearly imperceptible softening crossed his features. "I have been asked to present at the Academy on emotional resilience." A pause. "I believe I will have something to say."
Jeff saw T'Lara's hand twitch, as if she wanted to reach for Sorvak and held back. But their eyes met, and in that glance was a private world.
T'Lara turned to Jeff. "You showed me that connection is not weakness. That vulnerability is not contamination." Her voice was steady, but there was a tremor beneath it. "I will carry that with me."
Jeff swallowed. "Your courage did the work, T'Lara. I just... stood in the room."
"You did far more than stand," Sorvak said quietly. "You showed me that surrender does not mean loss."
Reilly stepped forward and embraced T'Lara, a gesture of such simple warmth that Jeff felt his chest tighten. T'Lara returned it, her arms wrapping around the Commander with a stiffness that slowly eased.
"Write to me," Reilly said against her hair. "Send me your observations from Vulcan. I want to know how the meditative touch is received, if you choose to explore it further."
T'Lara pulled back, her eyes bright. "I will. And you will send me your findings. I want to know that this work continues."
Sorvak and Jeff exchanged a look, and then Sorvak stepped forward and clasped Jeff's forearm in a formal Vulcan gesture. "Live long and prosper, Ensign."
"And you, Sorvak." Jeff returned the grip. "Take care of each other."
The words hung in the air, and Sorvak's gaze flicked to T'Lara. "We will."
The two Vulcans turned and walked up the ramp together, their robes brushing against each other as they moved. At the top, T'Lara paused and looked back, and she offered a smile, small and genuine, before disappearing into the ship.
The cargo hatch began to close, its massive mechanisms grinding into motion. Jeff stood beside Reilly as the Meridian Star's engines hummed to life, a deep resonance that vibrated through the deck plates. The amber lights pulsed, and the ship slowly disengaged from its moorings, drifting toward the open bay doors where the stars waited.
Reilly's hand found his, warm and quiet in the shadow of the docking bay.
"You did good work here, Ensign."
Jeff watched the ship grow smaller, a speck against the dark. "We all did."
She squeezed his hand, and they stood together as the Meridian Star slid into the void, carrying its crew toward new horizons. The docking bay fell silent, and the emptiness pressed in around them.
Jeff turned to Reilly. She was watching the space where the ship had been with an expression he could not read. But when she looked at him, her eyes were warm.
"Come," she said, tugging on his hand. "We still have work to do."
He followed her out of the docking bay, the echo of his footsteps a counterpoint to hers, the promise of new research ahead.
The words came before he could think them through, quiet and almost shy in the echoing bay. "Do you want to come back to my quarters?"
Reilly's eyebrows rose slightly, a flicker of surprise crossing her features. She studied him for a moment, her dark eyes reading the careful stillness of his posture, the way his hands had unclasped and hung at his sides. Then something warm kindled in her gaze.
"I would like that," she said.
They walked through the corridors in companionable silence, the hum of the station filling the space between them. The farewells still hung in the air, rich with meaning, and Jeff could feel the weight of the morning pressing on his shoulders. But beneath it, a current of anticipation stirred.
His quarters were not far from the research suite, a modest compartment he had kept immaculate since his arrival. But tonight, or rather this morning, he had prepared something different.
He paused at the door, his hand on the access panel. "I wanted to do something for you," he said, and he was surprised by the tremor in his voice. "After everything you did, organizing the workshops, guiding everyone through their boundaries, keeping the research on track. I wanted to thank you."
Reilly's expression softened. "Jeff, you don't need to thank me. This was always our work."
"I know." He met her eyes. "But I wanted to anyway."
He keyed the door open and stepped aside.
His quarters had been transformed. The standard-issue furniture had been pushed against the walls to create an open space in the center. Soft, colored lights glowed from strips mounted along the ceiling, casting the room in a warm amber and deep violet wash that softened every edge. Candles, real candles, flickered on the low table against the far wall, their flames throwing dancing shadows across the bulkheads. And suspended from a reinforced beam in the ceiling hung a swing, its padded seat covered in dark upholstery, its straps gleaming softly in the dim light.
Reilly stepped inside and stopped. Her gaze traveled slowly around the room, taking in the lighting, the candles, the swing. When she turned back to him, her eyes were luminous.
"You did this for me?"
Jeff rubbed the back of his neck. "I wanted to give you something. You've been so focused on everyone else's experiences, on guiding us through our first times, our discoveries. I thought." He took a breath. "I thought you deserved a chance to receive."
Reilly moved into the room, her fingers brushing over the soft fabric of the swing's seat. The motion sent it swaying gently, and the candlelight caught the gleam of the straps. She looked at him over her shoulder, and the smile that curved her lips was slow and warm.
"Ensign Smith," she said. "You continue to surprise me."
The compliment made his chest tighten. "Is that good?"
"That is very good." She turned fully and closed the distance between them, her hands coming up to rest on his chest. "I have been the one guiding, directing, observing. Every session, every workshop, I held the space for others to explore. I did not realize how much I needed someone to hold it for me."
He reached up and covered her hands with his own. "Then let me."
She kissed him then, deep and slow, and he felt the tension drain from her body in stages. Her shoulders dropped. Her spine curved into him. The Commander Reilly who commanded workshops and negotiated boundaries melted into something softer, something almost vulnerable.
"Tell me," she breathed against his lips. "Tell me how I did."
He understood. This was not about the research. This was about reassurance, about hearing from someone she trusted that the work mattered, that she mattered.
He guided her toward the swing, his hands gentle at her waist. She sat back into it with a rustle of fabric, the seat cradling her hips, her legs dangling. The straps held her securely, and she looked up at him from the low seat, her curly red hair spilling around her shoulders, her dark eyes catching the candlelight.
"You were remarkable," he said, kneeling before her. "From the moment the Meridian Star docked, you read every single one of them with such precision. Marin's hidden desires, Kor's bluster masking his hunger for real connection. You saw what they needed before they knew themselves."
He reached for her boots, pulling them off one at a time and setting them aside. His hands moved to the hem of her uniform top, and he paused, looking up at her for permission. She nodded, her lips parting slightly.
"You gave T'Lara her first taste of freedom from a lifetime of suppression," he continued, easing the fabric up over her ribs, her breasts, revealing the smooth skin beneath. "You showed her that desire was not contamination. That connection was not weakness."
He drew the top over her head and let it fall to the floor. She wore no bra, and her breasts rose and fell with her quickened breath. He bent forward and pressed his lips to her sternum, a soft, reverent kiss.
"And Sorvak," he murmured against her skin. "You saw through his Vulcan discipline to the fear beneath. You knew he was not cold, just terrified. And you created a space where he could surrender."
His hands moved to her trousers, unbuttoning them and drawing them down her legs. She lifted her hips to help him, and the swing swayed gently with the motion. Soon she was naked before him, held in the soft cradle of the seat, her body glowing in the warm light.
"And Kor," he said, his voice dropping lower. "You met his belligerence with your own sharp mind. You gave him a debate he could respect, and then you gave him something more. You showed him that intimacy could be honest."
He settled between her thighs, his hands sliding up her calves, her knees, parting her legs. The swing held her open for him, and he could see the glistening evidence of her arousal, the flush spreading across her chest.
"And Marin," he continued, pressing a kiss to the inside of her thigh. "You saw the confession she had carried for decades, and you held it with such care. You negotiated boundaries. You kept her safe. You gave her what she had been too afraid to ask for from anyone else."
Reilly's breath caught as he moved higher, his lips trailing up her inner thigh toward the apex of her legs. Her fingers found his hair, threading through it.
"And you," she whispered. "You gave me you."
He looked up at her, his hazel eyes meeting hers through the dim light. "You gave me everything first. You showed me that research could be living, breathing, human. You taught me that connection is not data to be gathered, but something to be experienced."
He lowered his mouth to her, and she gasped.
He was unhurried, reverent, his tongue tracing her folds with a tenderness born of genuine affection. He worshipped her as he spoke, his words pressed against her skin between kisses and licks.
"You are the most remarkable person I have ever met," he murmured against her. "Your intelligence, your courage, your willingness to put yourself in vulnerable places alongside everyone you study."
She arched into him, her fingers tightening in his hair, a low moan escaping her throat.
"You are beautiful," he continued, his tongue circling her clit. "Every morning I wake up grateful that the Academy sent me here, that my path crossed yours."
"Jeff." His name came out strained, breathless.
"The way you surrendered to Kor," he said, his voice rough with his own arousal. "The way you let Jeff penetrate you with the harness. The way you cry at night with your face pressed against my chest. All of it. Every part of you is wonderful."
She was trembling now, her hips rolling against his mouth, her breath coming in sharp gasps. The swing creaked softly beneath her, adding its rhythm to the moment.
"You are the best of both your worlds," he said, his tongue flicking across her clit. "The intuition of Betazed, the passion of humanity. And you have given all of it to this work, to these people, to me."
"Jeff, I'm close," she warned, her voice thin.
He doubled his efforts, his words falling away as he focused on her pleasure. His tongue traced patterns, his lips suctioned gently, and he felt her body coil tighter and tighter beneath his attention.
When she came, it was with a cry that shattered the quiet of the room. Her body arched off the swing, held by the straps, and he caught her through it, his mouth gentling as she rode out the waves. She trembled for a long moment, her breathing ragged, her fingers still twisted in his hair.
He pulled back, rising to his knees, and looked at her. She was flushed, glowing, her eyes half-closed with satiation. The swing still rocked gently, and she reached for him with hands that shook slightly.
"Come here," she whispered. "Come hold me."
He rose and leaned into her, and she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him close. The swing accommodated them both, swaying gently as he settled against her, their bodies pressed together in the warm, flickering light.
"That was," she started, then stopped, shaking her head.
"Good?" he offered.
She laughed, a soft, genuine sound. "It was everything."
"It was everything," she said, and the words seemed to echo in the warm, candlelit space.
Jeff stayed close, his arms wrapped around her, the swing swaying gently beneath their combined weight. He pressed his lips to her temple, then her cheek, then the corner of her mouth. Her skin was flushed, soft from the orgasm still humming through her.
"Can I get you anything?" he asked. "Water? Something to eat?"
Reilly's eyelids fluttered open, and she looked at him through a haze of contentment. She considered the question, a slow smile curving her lips.
"Water would be good," she said. "But bring it here. I'm not moving from this swing."
Jeff laughed softly and disentangled himself, padding barefoot across the deck to the small replicator built into the wall of his quarters. He keyed in a request for chilled water and waited as the replicator hummed and materialized a tall glass, condensation beading on its surface.
He returned to her, offering the glass. She took it with a grateful murmur and sipped, her dark eyes watching him over the rim. The amber and violet lights played across her naked skin, and she looked utterly at home in the swing, her red hair spilling against the dark upholstery.
"Thank you," she said, setting the empty glass aside on the low table. Then her gaze traveled down his body, lingering on the swell of his cock beneath his trousers, and her smile sharpened. "Now strip for me."
Jeff's breath caught. He had undressed for her before, many times, but the command was different tonight. It carried a weight, a deliberate shift in power that made his pulse quicken.
He reached for the hem of his shirt and drew it over his head, letting it fall to the floor. Reilly watched from the swing, one leg tucked beneath her, her fingers trailing idly along the padded seat.
"Slower," she said. "I want to watch."
He obeyed, letting his hands move with deliberate slowness as he unfastened his trousers, easing the zipper down inch by inch. Her eyes tracked every motion, unblinking. He pushed the fabric down over his hips, letting it catch on his erection for a moment before freeing it and stepping out of the trousers.
"Good." Her voice was low, approving. "Now touch yourself."
He wrapped his hand around his cock, already hard and aching. A small sound escaped him as he began to stroke, slow and measured. Reilly leaned back in the swing, making herself comfortable, and watched him perform.
"Faster," she directed. "But keep your eyes on me."
He did. His gaze locked on her as his hand moved with more urgency. The candlelight caught the sheen of her skin, the dampness still glistening between her thighs from her release. The sight of her, naked and languid in the swing, her authority absolute, drove him steadily toward the edge.
"Tell me what you're thinking about," she said.
His breath came faster. "You." He swallowed. "The way you look right now, watching me. The way you commanded everyone this week. The way you told Marin to beg."
Her lips parted, and she shifted in the swing, one hand sliding down her belly to touch herself, slow and lazy. "Good boy. Keep going."
The words sent a jolt through him. He stroked faster, his hips thrusting into his fist now, friction building toward release. The familiar heat coiled low in his belly, tightening, demanding.
"I'm close," he gasped.
Reilly's fingers moved in slow circles on her clit, her eyes half-lidded. "When you come," she said, her voice dropping to a low, intimate register, "I want you to mark me."
Jeff's mouth went dry. He had done this before, on her face in that first session, on her chest in the workshop with T'Lara watching. But the command, the anticipation of aiming his release precisely for the woman who now held all the power in the room, inflamed something primal in him.
"Where?" he managed.
She considered, her hand still moving between her thighs. "My breasts. I want to feel it painting my skin."
He groaned, his strokes becoming frantic. Reilly watched him, her own pleasure building as she played with herself, her breath quickening as she spectated his desperate need.
"Look at me when you do it," she commanded.
He did. His eyes locked on hers, dark and full of quiet fire. The tension crested, unbearable, and then he was over, his hand guiding his cock toward her chest as he came in thick, hot bursts.
The first rope of semen splashed across her left breast, streaking toward her collarbone. The second painted her right breast, dripping down between them. A third shot across both, pooling in the hollow of her throat, and she arched into it, a satisfied hum rising from her chest.
For a moment, he stood frozen, panting, his cock still twitching in his hand. And then Reilly rose from the swing in a single fluid motion, her body streaked with his release, and she closed the distance between them.
She took him in her hands, her fingers wrapping around his softening length, and she lowered her mouth to him without hesitation. Jeff gasped, his hands finding her shoulders for balance as she took him deep.
She had done this before, but never like this. She was thorough, methodical, drawing every last drop from him with her tongue and lips, refusing to let him pull away. Her eyes stayed open, watching his face as she worked, drinking him down until he was utterly spent and shaking.
When she finally pulled back, her lips glistening, she smiled up at him with a satisfaction that made his knees weak.
"There," she said softly. "That's how you thank me properly."
The words landed in the warm, candlelit air, and Jeff felt the shift in his bones. She was not finished with him. She was giving him a command wrapped in a lesson, one he understood with a clarity that made his spent body stir again.
"Lick it off me," Reilly said, her voice carrying the unmistakable weight of authority. "Every drop. I want to feel your tongue cleaning what you put on me."
His throat tightened, but not from reluctance. The sight of her, his release cooling on her flushed skin, glistening in the low light, summoned an obedience that went deeper than conscious thought. He stepped forward and lowered himself to his knees before her.
He started at her collarbone, where the thickest pool had gathered. His tongue was flat and warm as it swept across her skin, collecting the salty evidence of his desire. She tasted of him, but beneath that, the clean, particular taste of her own skin, warm and faintly sweet from the candles and the heat of the room.
Reilly's breath hitched as he worked. Her hand came to rest on his head, not guiding, just present, grounding them both in the act.
"Good," she murmured. "Slowly. Don't miss any."
He moved to her left breast, tracing the streak that had painted her skin from nipple to collarbone. His tongue circled the hard peak, lapping up the semen, then suckled gently to ensure he had caught it all. She made a soft sound above him, pleasure and approval twined together.
He crossed to her right breast and repeated the process, his mouth working in deliberate, unhurried strokes. When the skin was clean, he let his lips linger, pressing a kiss to the curve of her breast before moving lower.
The pool in the hollow of her throat was mostly gone, caught by his earlier pass, but he swept his tongue over it anyway, making certain. He travelled down her sternum, following the thin trail that had dripped between her breasts, until his face was level with her belly.
"There was more," he said, his voice rough. "It ran down."
"Then follow it."
He did. His tongue traced the slick path lower, over the gentle swell of her stomach, until he reached the damp thatch of hair at the base of her belly. The semen had mixed with her own wetness there, and the taste was complex, intimate, uniquely her. He lapped at her carefully, collecting what he could, and felt her thighs tremble against his shoulders.
When he looked up, she was watching him through half-lidded eyes, her lips parted, her chest rising and falling with quickened breath.
"You missed a spot," she said, and she guided his face between her legs.
He understood. This was not about semen anymore. This was about worship, about demonstrating with his mouth that her pleasure, her body, her needs came before his own comfort. He lowered his head and tasted her, finding her still slick from her earlier release, and he drank her in with the same reverence he had shown her chest.
Reilly's head fell back, and the swing creaked as she shifted her weight. Her fingers tightened in his hair as he worked, his tongue circling her clit with slow, deliberate pressure.
"That's it," she breathed. "That's how you finish the job."
He stayed until her thighs clenched around his head and she came a second time, her climax washing through her in a long, shuddering wave. He drank her through it, gentling his strokes until she went lax against the padded seat, boneless and breathing hard.
He rose on unsteady legs. His own body was spent, but a deep, quiet satisfaction filled the hollow spaces. Reilly looked up at him, her eyes soft and luminous in the candlelight, and she reached for him.
"Now the shower," she said. "I want you to wash me. Every part."
He helped her rise from the swing. Her legs wobbled, and she leaned into him as they crossed the room to the small adjoining bathroom. The shower cubicle was barely large enough for one, but they fit together with the ease of practice, her back against his chest as he reached past her to key the controls.
Warm water cascaded from the overhead nozzle, steam rising to fill the confined space. Jeff took the soap from its recessed holder and lathered his hands, then began at her shoulders.
He worked slowly, methodically, his palms sliding across her skin in broad, circular strokes. The soap made her flesh slick, and the steam wrapped around them like a cocoon, isolating them from the rest of the station, from the memory of the empty docking bay, from everything but the warm press of their bodies.
Her back first. He massaged the knots from her shoulders, traced the line of her spine, worked the curve of her waist. She sighed, her head falling forward against the tile, giving herself entirely to his hands.
"Turn around," he said softly.
She turned. The water streamed over her face, plastering her red curls to her skull, and she blinked up at him through the mist. He lathered his hands again and began on her chest, his palms sliding over her breasts with the same unhurried reverence he had shown with his tongue.
She watched him as he worked. Her hands came up to rest on his hips, not guiding, just holding.
"You've learned well," she said, her voice husky. "But you always knew how to care for someone, didn't you, Jeff? It just needed the right context to come out."
Heat rose in his chest. He did not know how to answer, so he leaned down and kissed her instead, soft and full of all the words he could not find. She kissed him back, and the soap ran down their bodies, forgotten.
He knelt to wash her legs, lifting each foot in turn, running his hands up her calves, her thighs, careful and thorough. When he reached the apex of her legs, he paused, and she nodded, a small permission, and he washed her there too, his touch gentle and reverent.
Then she took the soap from him.
"My turn," she said, and she guided him under the spray.
Her hands were sure and warm as she washed him, and he let himself be cared for in a way he rarely allowed. She soaped his chest, his arms, his back, lingering on the places where tension still lived. She knelt for him too, washing his legs, his feet, and then rose to press her body against his, her soap-slick breasts sliding across his chest.
They stood under the water until it began to run cool. Then she turned off the flow and reached for a towel, wrapping it around herself before handing him another.
They dried in comfortable silence, the steam slowly dissipating around them. Jeff wrapped his towel around his waist and ran a hand through his damp hair. Reilly stepped close and pressed a kiss to his cheek.
"Thank you," she said. "For all of it. The swing, the words, the care. I needed that more than I knew."
He smiled, something quiet and warm settling in his chest. "You deserved it."
She led him back into the main room, where the candles had burned low and the swing still hung in the center of the space, a silent testament to the morning's work. She pulled him down onto the soft mat she had noticed earlier, the one he must have layered in the center of the room for this purpose, and they lay side by side, her head on his shoulder, his arm around her.
The station hummed around them, quiet and steady. The Meridian Star was gone, carrying its crew toward whatever came next. But here, in the warm aftermath of their shared morning, Jeff felt a certainty settle over him.
This work would continue. And he would be there for all of it.
