Chapter 3: Spark into a flame
The fire had died to embers hours ago. The single candle on the chest guttered in a puddle of wax, casting long, swaying shadows across the sweat-slicked planes of their bodies. Dawn was a grey suggestion at the single small window, but inside Elspeth’s room, night clung on, heavy and intimate.
Kerr collapsed onto his back beside her, the narrow bed groaning in protest. A deep, satisfied groan rumbled in his chest. He was spent, utterly, for the third time. The warm evidence of it leaked from between her thighs, a constant, startling reminder of the night’s ferocity. The air was thick with the musk of sex and woodsmoke, a scent that felt more real than any perfume.
For exactly thirty seconds, the world was still. Elspeth stared at the ceiling, her body humming, every nerve a live wire. She felt flattened, gloriously ruined, her limbs loose and heavy as wet sand. She listened to his breathing begin to even out beside her.
Then his hand moved.
It was a slow, deliberate crawl across the scant inches of mattress that separated them. His fingers found her hip, traced the sharp bone there, then slid lower, into the damp tangle of hair. His thumb found her clit, swollen and hypersensitive, and brushed over it with a lazy, possessive familiarity.
A jolt, sharp and electric, shot through her. She gasped.
He rolled onto his side, propped up on an elbow. In the faint light, his eyes were dark pools, fixed on her face. He said nothing. He just leaned down and took one of her nipples into his mouth, sucking gently, then with more insistence, his tongue flicking over the pebbled peak.
“Kerr…” she breathed, the word more a sigh than a protest. Her body, which moments before had felt like a spent candle, flared back to life under his touch. A laugh bubbled up in her chest, unbidden, born of sheer, overwhelmed disbelief. It escaped her lips, a breathy, incredulous sound.
He lifted his head, a question in his eyes.
“It’s just…” She shook her head, her own hand coming up to cradle his jaw. His stubble was coarse against her palm. “Nobody warned me. Nobody said it could be like this. That a body could… keep answering.”
He smiled, a slow, tired, proud smile. “Yours does.”
He shifted then, his body covering hers again, his weight a welcome anchor. He was already hard, impressively so, nudging against her thigh. She reached between them, her fingers wrapping around his girth, guiding him back to her entrance. He sank into her with a low, effortless glide, a perfect, familiar fullness that made her eyes roll back.
This time was slower, deeper, a languid reclamation. There was no frantic urgency, just a profound, grinding rhythm. He kissed her throat, her shoulder, the hollow beneath her ear. She wrapped her legs around his waist, her heels digging into the small of his back, holding him as close as possible.
The pleasure built differently now—not a sudden storm, but a rising tide. It pooled in her belly, warm and insistent, spreading outwards with every slow, deliberate stroke. Another laugh escaped her, this one lower, richer, tinged with a kind of mad joy as the sensations crest inside her, wave after slow, rolling wave. She dug her fingernails into the hard muscle of his shoulders, her body trembling not with tension, but with a release so profound it felt like flying.
When she came, it was with a long, shuddering cry that melted into choked, breathless laughter against his neck.
He followed her, his own release a hot, pulsing flood inside her, his body shuddering against hers until he was still.
This time, he didn’t roll away. He stayed buried inside her, his face pressed into the crook of her neck, his breath hot on her damp skin. They lay like that for a long time, listening to each other’s hearts slow.
The grey at the window lightened to a pale, silvery blue. The castle around them began to stir; a distant door closed, a far-off bucket clanged.
Elspeth ran her fingers through his sweat-damp hair. “The sun’s coming up.”
“Mmm.”
“You should go. Before the household is fully awake.”
He lifted his head, his expression serious in the dim light. “I don’t want to.”
She looked at him—at the earnest, young-old face she’d known since it was smeared with jam and boyish mischief. The weight of the night, of all the nights that had led to this one, settled over her, but it felt soft now, like a well-worn blanket.
“I’m not going to overthink this,” she said quietly, her voice rough with use. “Not anymore.”
He stayed quiet, waiting.
“I’m not gonna sit here and question why a man like you, gorgeous as a summer day and strong as an oak, wants to spend his night… like this. With me.” She shook her head slightly, a final piece of resistance falling away. “I know you love me. You’ve always been sweet to me, ever since you were a boy trailing flour footprints across my clean floor.”
His eyes held hers, unwavering.
“And you should know,” she continued, her throat tight, “that I love you. I’ve known you since you were that sweet boy. I’ve watched you become this man.” She tapped his chest, over his heart. “This good man.”
He swallowed hard, a sheen in his eyes that had nothing to do with fatigue.
She smiled then, a real, easy smile that carved deep lines beside her eyes. She shifted her hips, a subtle, deliberate motion that made him groan as he slipped partially from her. “So stop thinking so much, Kerr Cousland.” Her hand slid down between them, her fingers circling the base of his cock, already stirring again against her palm. “And fill me up good and proper again. You’ve spoiled me rotten. I’m not used to going this long without coming.”
A slow, hungry grin spread across his face. He lowered his mouth to hers, kissing her with a tenderness that instantly ignited into something darker, more urgent. “Yes, ma’am,” he murmured against her lips.
And as the first true ray of sunlight breached the window, painting a stripe of gold across the rumpled blanket, he did.
