Chapter 2: Building Tension

Mallory stepped into the hotel room, her heart pounding in her chest like a drum. The opulence of the space was almost overwhelming, the soft, warm light from the setting sun casting a golden glow over everything. She took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of fresh flowers.

The room was a sanctuary, a stark contrast to the bustling city outside. A plush, king-sized bed dominated the space, its dark wood frame and plush, cream-colored comforter inviting her to sink into its depths. An ornate dresser stood against one wall, its surface adorned with a vase of fresh flowers and a small, silver-framed photograph.

She knew that she had an hour or so before Theo arrived. She had left him a key at the desk in the lobby.

He would let himself in when he arrived. She had no idea what time that would be, but she didn't care. She was here now, and that was all that mattered.

Mallory walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, her eyes drawn to the breathtaking view of the city skyline. The sun was dipping lower, casting long shadows over the buildings, the lights of the city beginning to twinkle like stars. She could see Central Park in the distance, the trees a riot of fall colors, the paths bustling with people.

She felt a sense of peace wash over her as she watched the world go by. She had always loved the city, the energy, the anonymity.

it offered. She felt alive here, free. She turned away from the window, her eyes scanning the room once more. She had always been a planner, a organizer, and she couldn't help but notice the little details. The plush towels in the marble bathroom, the complimentary bottle of champagne chilling in a bucket of ice, the fresh fruit basket on the dresser.

Mallory walked over to the dresser, her fingers trailing over the cool surface. She picked up the photograph, her eyes scanning the image. It was a picture of a couple, their arms wrapped around each other, their smiles wide and genuine. They looked happy, in love.

Mallory placed the frame back in its place. She decided to order a bottle of wine from room service while she waited. She wanted to relax, to let her nerves settle. She picked up the phone and dialed the number listed on the room service menu. A friendly voice answered on the first ring.

"Room service, how may I assist you today?"

"Hello," Mallory said, her voice steady and calm. "I'd like to order a bottle of your house red, please. And could you send up some cheese and crackers as well?"

"Of course, Ma'am. I'll have that right up for you."

Mallory hung up the phone, a small smile playing on her lips. She loved the simplicity of these interactions, the ease of it all.

. She walked over to the bed, sinking into the plush comforter, her body melting into the soft mattress. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, letting it out slowly. She could feel her body beginning to relax, her nerves starting to settle.

There was a soft knock at the door, and Mallory opened her eyes, her heart rate picking up again. She stood, smoothing down her dress, and walked over to the door. She looked through the peephole. That was quick, she thought as her order was here.

She opened the door to find a young man in a crisp uniform holding a tray with a bottle of wine, a cheese board, and a small bowl of crackers. He smiled at her, his eyes flicking over her body before he looked away, his cheeks flushing slightly.

"Thank you," she said, taking the tray from him. "Would you like me to sign for it?"

"No, Ma'am," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "It's been charged to your room."

She closed the door and carried the tray over to the dresser, placing it down carefully.

She poured herself a glass of wine, the rich red liquid swirling in the glass as she held it up to the light. She took a sip, the wine coating her tongue, the flavors exploding in her mouth. It was smooth, velvety, with a hint of fruit and spice.

She walked back over to the bed, She sat down, crossing her legs, and took another sip of wine. She could feel the tension in her body starting to melt away, her nerves settling as she sipped the wine.

She took another sip, her eyes scanning the room once more. She was deciding whether to stay in the dress she had on or slip into something sexy, more seductive. Or just strip down completely while she waited for Theo.

She was still debating when she heard the sound of a key card sliding into the lock. Her heart skipped a beat as she watched the handle turn, the door swinging open to reveal Theo standing in the doorway.

He was just as she remembered, tall and dark, with a smile that could light up a room. His eyes scanned the room, taking in the sight of her before settling on her face. "Mallory," he said, his voice a low rumble that sent shivers down her spine.

"Theo," she replied, standing up to greet him. She walked over to him.

He stepped inside, closing the door behind him, his eyes never leaving hers. The air between them was thick with tension, a palpable energy that seemed to crackle with every breath they took.

"Mallory," he said again, his voice barely above a whisper. He reached out, his hand cupping her cheek, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw. She leaned into his touch, her eyes fluttering closed for a moment before she opened them again, meeting his gaze.

"You look amazing," he murmured, his voice filled with admiration. She felt a blush creep up her cheeks at his words, her heart pounding in her chest.

"Thank you," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "You don't look so bad yourself."

Theo chuckled, his hand dropping from her face as he took a step back, his eyes scanning her body once more. "You always did know how to make a man feel good," he said, his voice filled with a hint of nostalgia.

Mallory smiled, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "And you always knew how to make a woman feel good," she countered, her voice laced with innuendo.

Theo's eyes darkened at her words, his gaze intensifying as he took a step closer to her. "Is that so?" he asked, his voice low and husky.

"It's been a long time, Mal."

She felt a shiver run down her spine at the sound of her old nickname on his lips. No one else said it quite like he did, and hearing it now sent a wave of memories crashing over her. She took a deep breath, steadying herself before responding.

"It has," she agreed, her voice steady despite the butterflies in her stomach. "But some things never change, Theo. Like the way you look at me."

Theo's lips curved into a slow, sensual smile, his eyes never leaving hers. "You always could read me like a book," he said, taking another step closer.

His hand reached out, tracing the curve of her shoulder before moving down to her arm. "And I can still see it in your eyes, Mal. The same hunger, the same desire."

Mallory felt her breath hitch as his fingers brushed against her skin. She had missed this, missed him. The way his touch sent shivers down her spine, the way his eyes darkened with desire. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself.

"You're not so bad yourself," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I thought you were a player now.

Always moving on to the next one," Mallory said, her voice laced with a hint of teasing. She wanted to keep the mood light, to not let the tension between them become too overwhelming.

Theo chuckled, his hand dropping from her arm as he took a step back. "Oh, I still am," he said, his voice filled with a playful arrogance. "But with you, Mal, it's always been different. You know that."

Mallory felt a flutter in her stomach at his words. She did know that. Even when they were younger, their relationship had always been intense, passionate. She had never felt with anyone else what she felt with Theo.

The connection between them was undeniable, electric. And even though they had been apart for so long, it seemed that nothing had changed.

Theo reached out, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered on her cheek, his thumb brushing against her bottom lip. "You're still as beautiful as ever, Mal," he murmured.

Mallory felt her heart skip a beat at his words. "And you're still as charming as ever," she replied, a small smile playing on her lips.

"But I must admit, I'm surprised you're still single. I always thought you'd be married by now, with a couple of kids running around."

Theo laughed, his head thrown back, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Is that what you thought?" he asked, his voice filled with amusement.

Mallory chuckled, shaking her head. She realized her wedding rings were still on. She instinctually tried to cover them, to hide them. Theo knows she’s married, but she still felt embarrassed. She tried to cover her rings with her hands, but Theo gently took her hands away.

"Mallory," he said softly, "you don't need to hide anything from me."

She looked at him, her eyes meeting his. "I'm sorry," she said, "it's just... it's been a long time."

Theo nodded understandingly. "I know," he said. "But we're here now. Let's just enjoy this moment."

Mallory took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. She felt her body relax as she let go of her embarrassment. She looked at Theo, really looked at him.

His eyes were warm and inviting, his smile genuine. There was no judgment in his gaze, only acceptance and understanding. She felt a wave of relief wash over her as she realized that he was right. They were here now, and they should just enjoy this moment.

"Okay," she said, her voice steady and calm. "Let's enjoy this moment."

Theo's smile widened, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "That's my girl," he said, his voice filled with affection.

He reached out, his hand cupping her cheek once more. His thumb traced the line of her jaw, his fingers tangling in her hair.

Mallory leaned into his touch, her eyes fluttering closed for a moment before she opened them again, meeting his gaze. She could see the desire in his eyes, the hunger that matched her own.

"You know, I've thought about this moment a lot," Theo murmured, his voice low and husky. "About what it would be like to see you again, to touch you again."

Mallory felt a shiver run down her spine at his words. "And what did you imagine?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Theo's lips curved into a slow, sensual smile. "I imagined that it would be just like this," he said.
