Chapter 2: Building Tension

The waiter approached their table, his notepad poised, a polite smile on his lips. "Are you ready to order, or would you like a few more minutes?" His eyes flicked between Mallory and Jason, but his gaze lingered on Mallory, drawn to her like a moth to a flame.

Jason glanced at Mallory, a small smile playing on his lips. "Ladies first," he said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through Mallory's chest.

Mallory picked up her menu, her eyes scanning the options, but her mind was elsewhere. She could feel Jason's gaze on her, intense and curious, like he was trying to peel back the layers of her soul.

It was a sensation that was both unnerving and exhilarating, a feeling she hadn't experienced in a long time. She took her time, considering each dish, not because she was indecisive, but because she wanted to draw out this moment, this dance of words and glances.

"Mallory?" The waiter prompted, a hint of impatience in his voice.

She looked up, her eyes meeting Jason's. "I'll have the sea bass, please. And a glass of your finest Merlot."

Jason nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. "I'll have the same," he said, handing the waiter his menu.

"And another one of these," he added, gesturing to his empty glass.

The waiter nodded, taking their menus and disappearing towards the kitchen. Mallory watched him go, then turned her attention back to Jason.

"So, Jason, you said you're intrigued by me. That's a bold statement. What makes you think I'm worth your time?"

Jason chuckled, a sound that was both warm and genuine. "Well, Mallory, I've found that the most interesting people are often the ones who are the most open. And you, my dear, are refreshingly open."

Mallory raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on her lips. "Refreshingly open? That's an interesting way to put it.

Refreshingly open. I suppose that's one way to describe it." Mallory leaned back in her chair, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "But I must admit, I'm not one to beat around the bush. I like to get to the point."

Jason nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "And that's what I find intriguing about you. You're not afraid to be direct. Most women I meet are so... guarded. But you, Mallory, you wear your heart on your sleeve." "Well, Jason, I've always been a bit of a rebel. I don't like to play games.

I like to know what I'm getting into, and I like to be upfront about what I want. And right now, what I want is to know more about you." Mallory's voice was steady, her gaze unwavering. She could see the curiosity in Jason's eyes, the way he was trying to decipher her, to understand her.

Jason leaned forward, his elbows resting on the table, his hands clasped together. "And what is it that you want to know, Mallory?"

She smiled, a slow, sensual curve of her lips. "Well, for starters, I'd like to know why you're so interested in me.

I mean, I'm flattered, of course, but I'm also curious. You seem like a man who could have any woman he wants, so why me?" Mallory asked, her voice a soft purr that seemed to wrap around Jason like a velvet glove. "You're not wrong, Mallory. I could have any woman I want, but that's not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for someone who's real, someone who's genuine. And you, my dear, are anything but fake."

Mallory laughed, a sound that was both surprised and pleased. "Well, thank you, Jason.

I appreciate your honesty. But I must admit, I'm still curious. What made you approach me in the first place?" Mallory asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. She took a sip of her wine, her gaze never leaving Jason's. "You mean besides the fact that you're stunningly beautiful?" "I saw you walk in, and there was something about you. A confidence, an openness. You didn't seem like the other women here, all prim and proper, hiding behind their designer labels and fake smiles. You were...

real. Genuine. And that's something I find incredibly attractive," Jason said, his voice low and sincere. Mallory felt a warmth spread through her at his words, a sensation that was both comforting and exhilarating. She had always been drawn to men who appreciated her for who she was, not for the image she projected.

"And I must admit, I was intrigued by your approach. Most women wait for the man to make the first move, but not you. You saw something you wanted, and you went for it. That's... refreshing." Jason took a sip of his wine, his eyes never leaving hers.

Mallory smiled, a slow, sensual curve of her lips.

"Well, Jason, I must say, you're not what I expected. I thought you'd be... more... reserved. More... conventional." She took another sip of her wine, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "And what exactly did you expect, Mallory? Some stuffy, old-fashioned man who'd be put off by your openness? Because let me tell you, I find it incredibly refreshing. It's like a breath of fresh air in this world of pretenses and facades." "Well, I'm glad you find it refreshing, Jason.

But I must warn you, I'm not one to shy away from the truth. I say what I mean, and I mean what I say. And that includes the fact that I'm married." She watched as Jason's expression changed, a hint of surprise flickering in his eyes, but it was gone as quickly as it had appeared.

Jason leaned back in his chair, a small smile playing on his lips. "Well, Mallory, I must say, that's not something I expected to hear on a first date. But I appreciate your honesty. It's refreshing, just like you said." Jason's voice was steady, his eyes never leaving hers. "I'm not one to judge someone based on their marital status. Besides, I find it intriguing that you're willing to be open about it. Most people would try to hide it, or at least downplay it." "Well, Jason, I'm not most people. I believe in being honest and upfront, even if it means risking a little vulnerability. And I must admit, I'm curious about you too. What makes you tick? What's your story?" "Well, Mallory, I'm a simple man.

I believe in honesty and authenticity, just like you. I'm a businessman, I own a few restaurants around the city, and I'm quite successful at it. But I've never been one to let my success define me. I'm more interested in the people I meet, the connections I make, than the zeros in my bank account." Jason's voice was steady, his gaze unwavering. He took a sip of his wine, his eyes never leaving Mallory's.

Mallory felt a warmth spread through her at his words. She had always been drawn to men who were more than just their bank accounts, who had depth and substance. "That's refreshing to hear, Jason.
