Chapter 1: Introduction
The sweet scent of exotic flowers floated through the open doors of the hotel bar, clinging to the sticky night air. The luxurious Hawaiian hotel's grandeur was everywhere, from the plush furniture to the intricately carved wood panels, reminding Muhammad of the beautiful palaces he had seen in Dubai. The soft hum of waves rolling onto the nearby beach created a soothing backdrop to the clinking of glasses.
Muhammad stared at his drink, swirling the amber liquid in its glass and watching as it caught the light from the overhead chandeliers. The weight of his thoughts pressed down on him, making it hard to breathe. He glanced over at his wife, Amina, who sat next to him, her eyes wide as she took in the sights of the hotel bar. Her dark hair glistened under the soft glow of the chandeliers, framing her pretty face. Muhammad couldn't help but marvel at her beauty, even as he felt a pang of frustration coil in his chest.
She was sweet and naïve, a traditional Muslim woman who had always been taught to obey her husband. Muhammad loved her in his own fashion- for her simplicity, her honesty, her unwavering devotion to him. But there was something he craved that she couldn't provide. She was inexperienced, and it showed in their feeble attempts at intimacy. Muhammad needed someone who could match his passion, understand his desires, and leave him breathless. He needed a man. Specifically, the one who had ignited a flame within him months ago in Dubai- Patrick. Muhammad still remembered every moment spent with Patrick vividly, from their steamy encounter on the airplane to their passionate encounters in the hotel room. Muhammad didnt really want to think about what had happened at the wedding reception. It filled him with shame and desire all mixed up together.
Muhammad had tried to bury his feelings for Patrick, focusing instead on the duties of a husband. But now, faced with the prospect of seeing Patrick again, his thoughts were a chaotic whirl of anticipation and fear.
Amina tried to speak to Muhammad, but he barely heard her. He forced a smile, nodding along as she spoke, his mind elsewhere. She seemed to notice his distraction, her dark eyes narrowing slightly as she regarded him.
"Muhammad, is everything alright?" she asked.
He looked at her, really looked at her, and saw the concern etched into her delicate features. A twinge of guilt twisted in his stomach. How could he be so selfish, so cruel, to lead this innocent girl on a path of heartache?
"Everything's fine, Amina," he lied, taking her hand in his. "Just a bit overwhelmed with everything, I suppose. This is a beautiful place, and I don't want to waste a moment of it."
She smiled, seeming to accept his words at face value.
"I'm glad you're enjoying it, Muhammad. I want this to be a wonderful honeymoon for us, something we can always cherish."
Her words tugged at his heartstrings.
"It will be, Amina. It truly will," he replied, meaning it.
The doors of the bar swung open, and in walked Patrick, scanning the room with a self-assured stride. Muhammad's heart skipped a beat, but he quickly looked away, focusing on his drink again. Patrick wore a white linen shirt, the top buttons undone, revealing a hint of his muscular chest. His graying hair was styled perfectly, and his eyes scanned the room until they landed on Muhammad and Amina. The corner of Patrick's lips turned up in a slight smirk, and Muhammad felt his pulse quicken.
Amina's grip on his hand tightened as they watched Patrick approach.
"Well, well, well," Patrick said, stopping in front of them. "What a surprise to see you both here. It wasnt long ago."
Muhammad tried to keep his voice steady. "Patrick, what are you doing here?"
"Just on vacation," Patrick replied, his eyes never leaving Muhammad. "Imagine my surprise when I saw the reservation under your name, Muhammad. A coincidence, I assure you."
Amina looked between the two men, her brow furrowed in confusion.
"You were the architect I met at the reception. How strange."
Patrick finally turned to her, his gaze taking in her delicate features and the way she clung to Muhammad's hand.
"Life take strange turns sometimes. Me and Muhammad go way back."
Muhammad's throat felt dry as he nodded in agreement to Patrick's lie.
