Chapter 1: Birth of a Beast - Rage and Growth

Consciousness returned in fragments. First, the taste of concrete dust and copper. Then, the pressure, a thousand pounds of it, settling on his chest like a jealous lover. Magnus tried to suck in a breath and failed. His lungs fluttered, trapped. Panic, pure and electric, shot down his spine.

The reactor. The containment breach.

Memories spliced together: a blue-white flash, the scream of tearing metal, the floor vanishing beneath him. He was supposed to be paste. Instead, he was here, in the dark, buried alive.

Breathe. You have to breathe.

He strained against the weight.Nothing. It was absolute. The darkness pressed in, tactile and thick. His thoughts began to smear at the edges, a dizzying slide towards a silent end.No. A different kind of heat bloomed in his core, a response deeper than thought. It was cellular, an ancient switch flipping. His body, marinated in unknown energies, interpreted his panic not as a dirge, but as a command.

GROW.

It wasn’t pain, at first. It was a terrifying, profound fullness. A straining sensation, like his skin was a packed suitcase splitting at the seams. He felt his rib cage creak, then groan, then push. The crushing weight on his chest lessened by a millimeter. Dust trickled down onto his face.

He took a shuddering, half-gulp of air. It was the sweetest thing he’d ever tasted.

The heat spread, a reactor core igniting in his belly, flooding his limbs. His back, pinned against shattered concrete, began to broaden. He heard a seam in his lab coat pop. Then another. His shoulders pressed outwards, shoving rubble aside with a gritty scrape. The pressure was transforming, morphing from external oppression to an internal, explosive urgency. He wasn’t being crushed. He was outgrowing the tomb.

“Come on,” he rasped, the word a dry scrape in his throat. “More.”

He focused on the heat, on the need for space, for air, for freedom. His pectorals, already defined from a lifetime of meticulous gym routines, tightened. They hardened into stone slabs. He felt the individual muscle fibers thrum, then multiply, weaving into new, dense cables. They swelled forward, lifting the wreckage on his chest another inch. A strange, prickling sensation spread across them. His chest hair, usually trim, grew coarse and thick, pushing through the torn fabric of his shirt like dark wire.

A wild laugh caught in his throat. It was working. He was pushing the world away with his own flesh.

He pushed harder, mentally leaning into the strange new energy. The groan of stressed metal filled the tiny space. A sliver of murky, green-tinged light speared the darkness from a crack above. It illuminated the dust motes dancing on the new, vast expanse of his own burgeoning chest. He stared, mesmerized. His pecs were monstrous. Veins ridged the surface, throbbing in time with his heartbeat, mapping the new power coursing beneath. The hair was a dense, dark pelt.

He wasn’t just surviving. He was… evolving.

With a final, gritted shout, he heaved.

Concrete shattered. A steel beam bent with a shriek and buckled upwards. The world erupted in noise and light as the rubble mound exploded outward from the center. Magnus surged upwards, stumbling into the ruined main hall of the Genesis Dynamics Bio-Engineering Wing. Rain fell through the shattered roof, cold on his feverish skin. He braced his hands on his knees, his breath coming in great, gusting roars that echoed in the cavernous space.

He looked at his hands. They were shovel-blades, crisscrossed with scars both old and new. His shirt and coat hung in tatters, revealing a torso that belonged on a monumental statue. A statue that breathed. He took a step, and the floor trembled. A deep, resonant thrill vibrated through him, settling in his bones.

This wasn’t deformity. This was an upgrade.

A noise to his left.A scraping boot. Magnus turned, his movement surprisingly fluid for his new mass.

A figure stood in the archway leading to the secure labs.Dr. Eli Vance, his colleague, his sometime-friend. Eli’s face was ash-white, streaked with soot and blood. He held a fire axe like a talisman.

“Magnus?” Eli’s voice was a whisper. “My God. What… what happened to you?”

Magnus straightened up to his full, impossible height. He saw his own reflection in a jagged piece of glass still clinging to a window frame: a giant, silhouetted against the storm, his features hardened, his eyes gleaming with a light that hadn’t been there before. He felt a new impulse, hot and simple. The urge to see Eli flinch. To make him acknowledge the scale of this change.

He took one heavy step forward. The concrete cracked under his bare foot. He watched Eli’s eyes drop to the foot, then travel up the colossal legs, over the swollen, hairy expanse of his chest, finally meeting his gaze.

“An accident, Eli,” Magnus said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to emanate from the walls themselves. He spread his arms slightly, a display. “A fortunate one.”

Eli didn’t lower the axe. His knuckles were white. “The… the containment field. It modulated your cellular structure. This is uncontrolled hypertrophy, Magnus. It’s a pathological condition! We need to get you to decon, run scans, see if we can stabilize–”

“Stabilize?” Magnus chuckled, the sound like grinding stones. He took another step, closing the distance. He saw Eli’s throat bob as he swallowed. The fear was a scent in the air, pungent and sweet. It fed the heat inside him. “Look at me, Eli. Do I look unstable?”

He flexed. Not a gym flex, but a slow, tectonic shift of muscle. His pectorals bunched and swelled, climbing higher on his chest, the thick hair catching the rain and glistening. They were magnificent. A testament. The axe in Eli’s hands suddenly looked like a toy.

“Put the axe down, Eli.” It wasn’t a request. He let the new resonance bleed into his voice, a subtle vibration he felt in his own jaw. It wasn’t just sound. It was pressure.

Eli’s arm trembled. His will visibly frayed, crumbling under the sheer, physical presence looming over him. The axe clattered to the ground, the echo sharp and final.

Magnus smiled. It was a new expression for his new face. He looked past Eli, through the archway, into the darkness of the ruined labs. Down towards the sub-levels where the real secrets, the unfinished protocols, might still be intact. The heat in his core pulsed, a steady, hungry drumbeat.

The rubble had been just the first layer to shed. The world outside, with its rules and its small people, was next.

He placed a hand on Eli’s shoulder, feeling the man shudder under the weight of it. “Good,” Magnus rumbled, his gaze fixed on the depths.“Now. Let’s see what else this place has for me.”

Eli led the way, a flickering emergency light in his hand casting long, trembling shadows. Magnus’s footsteps were like distant drums in the ruined corridor, each one a declaration. They passed twisted machinery, consoles spitting weak sparks, the ghosts of their old ambitions. The further they went, the stronger the hum became—a sub-audible thrum in the teeth that Magnus felt in his new bones. It called to the heat in his core.

“The tertiary lab,” Eli whispered, his voice thin against the rumble of settling steel. “The Archon Project. The core is… dormant, but intact.”

Magnus shoved the reinforced door.
