Chapter 1: First Encounter: The City Boy and the Sea-Wild Girl
The door groaned on hinges crusted with salt, announcing Artem’s entrance with a sound like a tired sigh. A wave of cool, dim air washed over him, carrying the low, complex scent of old fish, damp wood, and the sweetness of rotting timber. It was a smell that felt ancient, and for a moment, it was a relief from the blinding white glare of the beach outside.
He blinked, letting his eyes adjust. Dust motes danced in the single slat of sunlight cutting through the window. The shelves were a chaos of faded labels—canned spaghetti, baked beans, boxes of tea gone soft with humidity. A rack of postcards showed a brighter, bluer version of the coast that existed a decade ago.
His city-worn boots, still new enough to be stiff, tracked a fine line of sand across the warped floorboards.
“You’ll be sweeping that up.”
The voice was smooth, low, and held no apology. It came from behind the counter.
Artem’s gaze lifted. She was leaned back in a wooden chair, bare feet propped on the counter’s edge. Her toes were dusted with the same fine, gold sand he’d just brought in. One ankle was ringed with a delicate, inked bracelet of ocean waves.
