Chapter 3: Rising Action

Henry stood outside Ted's cubicle, his heart pounding like a drum in his chest. The hum of office chatter was a distant buzz, drowned out by the fierce debate raging in his mind. He knew he should be focusing on the work-related matters that had brought him to Ted's doorstep, but try as he might, his eyes kept wandering south, drawn like a moth to a flame. The very sight of Ted's cubicle, with its stark white walls and motivational posters, was enough to send his thoughts spiraling down a path he hadn't expected to tread when he'd started this new job.

He'd been trying to maintain a semblance of professionalism, but with each passing day, it was becoming increasingly difficult.

Ted was sitting at his desk, poring over a thick stack of papers, his phone wedged between his shoulder and ear. He looked up as Henry entered, his brow creasing in confusion when he saw the dazed expression on Henry's face.

"Everything alright, Henry?" Ted asked, concern lacing his voice. He swiveled his chair slightly, giving Henry a better view of his profile. Henry swallowed hard, forcing himself to look away from the enticing sight.

"Yeah, I'm just...

having trouble focusing today. I think all the newness is catching up to me," Henry said, his voice barely above a whisper. He could feel the heat rising in his cheeks, a sure sign that he was blushing like a teenager.

Ted nodded, his expression softening. "It's a lot to take in, I know. But don't worry, it gets easier. Just give it some time." He paused, his eyes flicking to the stack of papers on his desk before meeting Henry's gaze again. "Listen, why don't you grab us some coffee? My usual, black with two sugars.

It'll give you something to do, and it'll help clear your head," Ted suggested, flashing a reassuring smile. Henry nodded, grateful for the excuse to escape the cubicle and the uncomfortable thoughts swirling in his head.

Henry made his way to the office kitchen, the clacking of his loafers against the linoleum floor now a metronome to the chaotic symphony of his mind. He filled two coffee mugs with the steaming black liquid, adding two sugars to each. As he stirred the contents, he caught a reflection of himself in the glass of the coffee maker. His face was flushed, his eyes wide and slightly panicked.

Henry took a deep breath, trying to steady himself as he carried the mugs back to Ted's desk. He had to get a grip. He couldn't let his newfound infatuation cloud his judgment or jeopardize his professionalism.

As he approached Ted's cubicle, he heard Ted's voice, sharp and clipped, on a call. "No, no, no. That's not what we discussed. I need those numbers by EOD, not next week..." Ted's voice trailed off as he spotted Henry, and relief washed over his face.

He held up a finger to signal he'd be a moment, then muted the call. "Thanks, Henry," he mouthed, taking the coffee from him.

Henry nodded, too focused on regulating his breathing to speak. He turned to leave, desperate to put some distance between himself and the object of his growing obsession.

"Hey, wait up," Ted said, his voice soft. Henry paused, turning slowly to face him. "You alright? You seem... flustered," Ted observed, his eyes searching Henry's face.

Henry forced a smile, hoping it didn't look as pained as it felt.

"Yeah, just a bit overwhelmed. New job jitters, I guess."

Ted nodded, his expression sympathetic. "I get it. I was a mess my first week here. But hey, look at me now." He gestured to his neatly organized desk and the towering stack of papers.

Henry chuckled, trying to match Ted's lighthearted tone. "Right. One day at a time, huh?"

Ted grinned. "Exactly. And hey, if you ever need to vent, my door's open.

Or my ear, at least," Ted added with a wink. "Now, go on, get out of here. I've got a call waiting, and you've got work to do."

Henry nodded, grateful for the change in subject. "Thanks, Ted. I appreciate it."

He turned to leave, but not before catching one last glimpse of Ted's rounded backside as he sat down, coffee in hand. He couldn't help but feel a pang of desire mixed with guilt, a confusing cocktail of emotions that left him reeling.

As he walked back to his desk, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was in over his head.
