Chapter 8: The Taste of a Challenge

Seraphina woke to the weight of satin sheets and the deep silence of a room holding its breath. The air was cool against her bare skin, the faint, lingering scent of hotel soap and something darker, metallic, underneath. Her eyes opened to the dim, golden twilight of a single lamp left burning. She was alone in the vast bed.

Memory returned not in a trickle but a flood. The girl’s throat under her teeth. The boy’s shattered ribcage. The steam of the shower, the marble against her back, the brutal, claiming drive of him inside her.The taste of blood and whiskey. A shudder ran through her, part revulsion, part electric recall.

She pushed herself up on her elbows, the sheet pooling at her waist. The suite was a landscape of shadows and order—too ordered. Then her eyes adjusted, landing on the figure at the foot of the bed.

Caspian stood naked in the lamplight, a statue carved from pale gold and tension. One hand was wrapped loosely around his erection, stroking with an idle, possessive rhythm. He was already fully hard, the length of him impressive and intentional in the quiet room.

“Sorry,” he said, his voice a low rasp that scratched against the silence. “You just look so… innocent when you sleep.”

His eyes were pure obsidian, the green swallowed by a hunger that had nothing to do with blood and everything to do with her.His tongue swept slowly across the points of his exposed fangs.

Seraphina forced a scoff, pulling the covers higher, a pathetic shield.“Sorry to disappoint you. But you should know from last night that I am far from innocent.” She tried to coat the words in boredom, in disgust, but her own body betrayed her. Her mouth flooded with saliva, a primal response to the sight of him.A slow, aching heat pooled low in her belly, a slick, undeniable welcome.

“I am well aware.” His thumb smoothed over the head of his cock, collecting a bead of moisture that glistened before falling onto the duvet with a soft, dark spot. “That’s what makes you so… interesting.” His gaze pinned her. “Tell me… do you beg just as furiously as you kill?”

Pride was a cold, sharp blade inside her. She sat up fully, letting the covers fall to her waist, baring her torso to the cool air and his hotter stare. Her nipples tightened instantly.“I don’t beg. Frankly, it’s disrespectful you think I’d beg at all.” She tilted her chin up. “I eat boys like you for breakfast.”

The air in the room changed, tightened. A low, dangerous rumble built in his chest. “I am no boy,” he said, dropping his voice to a growl that vibrated through the floorboards. It was a warning, pure and simple.

“A servant, then?” she whispered, leaning forward slightly, offering the line of her neck in a gesture that was both challenge and bait. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drum.

He moved. It wasn’t human speed. One moment he was across the room, the next his weight was on her, pressing her back into the mattress, his mouth crashing down on hers. It was all teeth and desperation. No pretense of tenderness, only a collision of wants. She bit his lip, hard, tasting the coppery tang of his blood. He growled into her mouth, his hand fisting in her hair to pull her head back, exposing her throat. His fangs grazed the skin there, a promise, a threat, before his mouth traveled lower, to her breast, sucking a deep bruise into the porcelain flesh.

Her nails raked down his back, drawing parallel lines of crimson that smeared under her palms. He hissed, part pain, part savage pleasure, and shifted his weight, parting her legs with a rough knee. He didn’t enter her.Not yet. He held himself above her, the hard, hot length of him pressing against her core, a torment.“Beg,” he commanded, his breath hot on her cheek.

“Go to hell,” she spat, arching against him, seeking friction.

He gave it to her, a slow, grinding roll of his hips that made her see stars. Then he stopped. “Beg, Seraphina.”

She answered by surging up, sinking her fangs deep into the muscle of his shoulder. He shouted, a raw sound of pained ecstasy, and finally slammed into her, filling her completely in one ruthless stroke. She cried out, the sound swallowed by his mouth. It was a battle without rules. The headboard slammed against the wall with a rhythmic, cracking cadence.A lamp was knocked over, shattering on the floor in a burst of glass. She scratched at his arms, his sides, drawing blood. He pinned her wrists above her head, his grip iron, and drove into her with a pace designed to unravel her. She wouldn’t let it. She clenched around him, biting at his neck, his collarbone, anything she could reach. The taste of his blood mixed with the scent of their sweat, the burn of their muscles. She came first, a violent, shaking climax that tore a ragged scream from her throat. He followed moments later, his own release shuddering through him with a choked roar, his body collapsing onto hers before he caught his weight on his arms. They were both breathing like they’d run for miles, slick with sweat and each other’s blood. They didn’t stop. Couldn’t.The moment their heartbeats slowed from frantic gallops, the challenge sparked again. He flipped her onto her stomach, pulling her hips up, entering her from behind. She clawed at the sheets, pushing back against him, meeting every thrust. Later, she was on top, riding him with a furious intensity, her nails digging into the hard planes of his chest, her head thrown back. He watched her, his hands gripping her thighs, his eyes never leaving hers, dark and fierce and endlessly hungry. The room was a warzone.A chair was knocked over. The velvet drapes were torn from one rod.The pristine duvet was a tangled, stained mess on the floor. They moved from the bed to the wall to the floor, a tangle of limbs and desire and unyielding will. They drew blood, they licked wounds, they took and they gave with a ferocity that bordered on annihilation. They lost count of the times they pushed each other over the edge. The world narrowed to the heat of skin, the slide of sweat, the sharp gasp, the broken curse, the blinding rush. They were two storms trying to consume each other, and neither would break.

A firm, polite knock at the suite’s main door finally sliced through the haze.

They froze, Caspian deep inside her, Seraphina braced against the ruined sofa. They were both panting, covered in a fine sheen of blood and sweat, marked with bites and scratches.

“Lord Ashford? My Lady? The car is ready for the airport,” a male voice called through the door.A beat of silence. Then a low, incredulous chuckle bubbled from Caspian’s throat. It was echoed by Seraphina’s own breathless laugh, a sound of pure, exhausted madness. They looked at each other, seeing the wreckage of the room mirrored in the other’s disheveled, spent appearance.

Caspian raised his voice, steady despite his breathing.“Come back in an hour.”

A pause from the other side. “Of course, sir.”

The footsteps retreated.

Caspian looked down at her, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his swollen lips. She smiled back, all sharp edges and defiance.

He withdrew from her, standing with a fluid grace that belied the hours of violence. He offered her a hand. She took it, letting him pull her up.

“Last one to the shower,” he said, his voice rough, “has to beg.”

She didn’t hesitate. She was moving before the words finished leaving his mouth, a flash of pale skin and dark hair darting toward the bathroom. He was right behind her, his laughter chasing her into the steam.
