At Greyspire Academy, eighteen-year-old Lisandra Blackwood is accustomed to being overlooked. Her celebrated family dismisses her, her classmates outshine her, and even simple spells collapse before she can complete them. While searching the library for an explanation, Lisandra touches a book of ancient Celtic enchantments and awakens a searing, throne-like brand on her forearm. The mark radiates the raw power she has always lacked—and immediately draws dangerous attention. As rebellious Caspian Thorne steps into her path and hidden agendas begin closing around her, Lisandra must discover whether the brand is a curse, a forgotten inheritance, or the first sign that she was never powerless at all.

Characters

  • Caspian Thorne — A charismatic and intellectually sharp Greyspire student whose rebellious charm conceals a profound distrust of magical authority.
  • Lisandra Blackwood — An overlooked, bookish witch whose unreliable magic and mysterious glowing brand place her at the center of an ancient struggle.

Chapter 1: The Mark Awakens

Lisandra traced the spine of a particularly dusty tome, the vellum cool beneath her fingertips. *Magical Afflictions and Their Antidotes, Volume III*. Probably useless, like all the others, but she was running out of options. Maybe that was her problem, she mused, she always thought she was running out of options.

Around her, the Greyspire library buzzed with the low thrum of afternoon study. Fifth-years huddled over runecraft textbooks, their brows furrowed in concentration. Seventh-years whispered conspiratorially in the restricted section, probably plotting pranks, or more likely, trying to snog without the head librarian catching them. Lisandra envied them, their easy camaraderie, their bright futures stretching ahead like open roads. She felt like she was standing still, mired in a bog while everyone else raced past.

She pulled the book from the shelf, a puff of dust tickling her nose, and coughed. Useless was too gentle a word for most of these books. Delusional was more like it, considering how little they helped. Still, she couldn't stop searching. Couldn't stop hoping she'd find something, *anything*, that would explain why her magic felt like a flickering candle in a hurricane. Why simple spells sputtered and died on her tongue, why she was always the last one picked for partner work, the one everyone forgot to invite on village weekends.

Lisandra carried the book to a quiet corner, far from the windows where the afternoon light streamed in, ignoring the looks she always seemed to garner. She preferred shadows anyway. She settled at a table scarred with old ink stains and whispered enchantments, her breath catching in her throat. She ran her fingers along the cover of the book, the brittle pages filled with ancient text and diagrams of long-forgotten curses. She hoped, she prayed, she begged the universe for some guidance, some answer. She was tired of being mediocre, of being invisible, of being a Blackwood who couldn't even cast a decent *light charm*.

She opened the book, the pages crackling in protest, and began to read. The text was dense, filled with archaic terminology and convoluted theories. She scanned the index, her eyes darting from one entry to the next, searching for anything that resonated with her own experience. Nothing. Of course. Why would today be any different?

Lisandra sighed, pushing the book away. Maybe she was born without the spark, a magical anomaly, a disappointment to her family. Her brothers were all stellar wizards, her parents renowned potion-makers. And then there was her. Lisandra the Lackluster, the girl who couldn't even manage a decent charm. All she wanted was to be good at magic, to feel the power thrumming through her veins like she knew it was supposed to. Why was that too much to ask?

She glanced around the library, at the other students absorbed in their studies, and a wave of despair washed over her. They all seemed so confident, so capable, so… magical. She was an imposter, a fraud, a paper cutout pretending to be a witch. She’d spent countless hours locked away here, poring over spells that refused to work. Maybe she should just accept it, accept her fate as a magical dud and find a nice, quiet corner to fade away into.

Lisandra closed her eyes, willing away the tears that threatened to spill. She wouldn't cry. She refused to give them the satisfaction. She’d spent years perfecting her mask of indifference, and she wasn’t about to let it crack now. She inhaled deeply, then reached for another book, a smaller volume bound in faded blue leather. *Enchantments of the Ancient Celts*. It was a long shot, but what did she have to lose?

As her fingers brushed against the spine, a jolt of energy surged through her. Not the faint tingle she sometimes felt when she accidentally brushed against a magical object, but a raw, untamed power that made her gasp. The air around her crackled with electricity, and the hairs on her arms stood on end. What was happening?

A searing pain erupted on her left forearm, so intense she cried out. It felt like her skin was being branded with molten gold, the pain immediate and agonizing. She stumbled backward, knocking over her chair, and clutched her arm, her breath coming in ragged gasps. What was going on? Was this a curse? Had she finally triggered some dormant hex hidden in one of these dusty books?

She ripped up her sleeve, her heart pounding in her chest, and stared in disbelief. Etched into her skin, glowing with an eerie light, was a brand. An intricate design of swirling lines and ancient symbols that seemed to pulse with a life of its own. It radiated heat, burning her flesh, and a wave of dizziness washed over her. She stared at the mark, her mind reeling. What was this? What did it mean?
