Chapter 2: Building Tension
The markets of the underbelly were a labyrinth of makeshift stalls and ramshackle buildings, a stark contrast to the gleaming towers that loomed overhead. The air was thick with the scent of exotic spices, the cacophony of haggling voices, and the hum of drones delivering goods to eager customers.
Brando navigated the crowded streets with practiced ease, his cybernetic prosthetics aiding his progress. The market bustled with life, a microcosm of the city's diverse population. Humans rubbed shoulders with alien species of every shape and size, their faces a riot of colors and textures.
He finds a nearby restaurant and grabs a seat. He sends his location to Alice.
She arrives soon after, her short black hair framing her face, a slight smile playing on her lips as she spots him. She's dressed in combat gear, a jacket with various pockets and compartments, and her trusty wrist-mounted blaster.
"Brando Rek, I heard you were in town," she says, sliding into the seat across from him. "Thought I'd come see for myself."
He raises an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his voice. "You know, for a bounty hunter, you're more talkative than I'd expect."
She grins, leaning back in her chair.
"Alice Chen, good to meet you. You already know my name." He extends his human hand to shake hers.
She takes it, a firm grip, her thumb subtly brushing against his. "Likewise. I've heard a lot about you, Brando. The war hero, the ghost of Ghost Company."
"I'm no hero, but I've served with a few.," he says, letting go of her hand. "And I was never Ghost."
She laughs cheekily, "Just making sure it was really you. No shortage of pretenders."
"They all blow the left side of their bodies off, for authenticity?" Brando jokes
"You'd be surprised." She smirks.
He smirks. "What brings you here, Alice?" Brando asked, signaling the waiter for a refill on their drinks. "Slumming it in the underworld?"
Alice shrugged, her eyes scanning the crowd. "Business, mostly. There are always jobs here, and the pay is good." She turned back to him, her gaze lingering on his cybernetic eye. "You understand that, don't you?"
Brando nodded, taking a sip of his drink. "All too well. I need to make a stop to shop. After that we are good to go, unless you need something. Who is the first contract?" Brando asked, his gaze steady on Alice. He could sense her curiosity, her professional interest, and something else, something warmer. He didn't mind it. It had been a long time since he felt like someone was genuinely interested in him, not just his past or his injuries.
Alice pulled out a small tablet from her jacket, swiping through a few screens before turning it to face him. "A low-level crime lord, goes by the name of Nikolai Varnak. He's been causing trouble in the Zeta sector, muscling in on legitimate businesses."
"Okay. What's his play? How does he do it? Are we bringing him in alive?" He asked, his brain churning.
His tactics, his connections. This is a start, but we need more. What's his endgame? Who's he working for?" asked Brando.
Alice swiped through a few more screens, her fingers dancing over the tablet. "From what I've gathered, Varnak is plays the long game. He's been building his network over the past few years, slowly but surely. He's got some powerful backers, but no clear ties to any of the major syndicates."
Brando nodded, his gaze fixed on the tablet. "If he's hitting legitimate businesses then we hit his illegitimate businesses. Where does his dirty money come from? Drugs? Gambling? Prostitution?" Brando asked, raising an eyebrow.
Alice nodded. "Among other things. He's got a string of brothels and pleasure houses in the Zeta sector. They're fronts for his more nefarious activities—drugs, weapons, you name it."
"Sounds like our guy is a one-stop shop for vice," Brando said, a grim smirk playing on his lips. "And where do we find this one-stop shop?"
Alice slid the tablet back into her jacket and leaned in, her voice dropping to a low whisper. "There's a place called The Crimson Veil."
"Good work, Alice. We will shop and get a room in town. Unless you'd rather get two...?" Brando's gaze lingered.
" One room will be sufficient. Do you know the place?"
"Yeah, it's not far from here. A seedy little dive, but it's cheap and it's got a certain charm." Alice smirked.
"If you say so. I'll meet you there in a few hours. I need to pick up some... supplies." Brando said, tapping his new credit card on the table and standing up.
Alice raised an eyebrow. "Supplies, huh? You're not planning to go all Rambo on this guy, are you?"
Brando chuckled, a low rumble in his chest. "If we have to. I don't intend to get caught unprepared." He shows her his shopping list. "Meet you at the motel?"
Brando asked, already striding away, his gaze scanning the crowd for any potential threats.
Alice nodded, watching him go. There was a certain confidence in his stride, a purpose that belied the weariness in his eyes. She could see why he was highly decorated, why Ghost Company valued him so much, even if they couldn't officially recruit him. He was a man of action, a man who got things done. And yet, there was a vulnerability there too, a sadness that lingered just beneath the surface.
She turned her attention back to her tablet, pulling up a map of the city and locating the motel. It was a rundown little place, nestled in the heart of the Zeta sector.
The Motel Elysian, it was called. A misnomer if ever there was one. The place was a relic from a bygone era, the doors chipped, the paint peeling, and the neon sign flickering like a dying heartbeat. But it was cheap, and more importantly, no questions asked. Just the way Brando liked it.
He pulled his hovercar into the parking lot, the vehicle's hum fading as he killed the engine. He stepped out, the evening air cool on his skin.
He quickly gathered all the items on his list and supplies for however long they would have to stake out locations. He approached the motel and entered the room.
He had a small duffle bag with him, containing his gear. He didn't usually carry much, but what he did carry was essential. He dropped the bag onto the bed and began to unpack.
His cybernetic arm whirred softly as he pulled out a small, black device. It was a tracker, state-of-the-art, capable of attached to a target and relaying their exact location. He laid it on the bedside table, next to his blaster.
The room was small, barely enough space for the bed, a dresser, and a small table with two chairs. The walls were a faded shade of blue, the carpet worn and stained.
The room was stuffy, the air smelling faintly of sweat and cheap perfume. Brando didn't mind. He'd stayed in worse places. Much worse.
He was busy setting up his equipment when the door slid open. Alice stepped inside, her eyes scanning the room before settling on him.
"Nice place," she said, a hint of sarcastic humor in her voice.
Brando shrugged, a small smile playing on his lips. "It's homey."
Alice snorted, dropping her own duffle bag onto the chair.
Brando pulls disinfectant and aromatics out of his bag and lights a cigarette. His begins scrubbing the place clean.
Alice watches him, an amused smile on her face. "You know, I've never seen a bounty hunter who puts this much effort into cleaning a motel room. Most people would just throw down a towel and call it a night."
Brando chuckles, "I've slept in worse places, but I prefer not to. Besides, it's the little things that keep you sane in this line of work." He winks at her, his cybernetic eye glinting in the dim light.
Alice leans against the dresser, her arms crossed over her chest. "So, what's the plan?"
"Recon. Set up surveillance to see how he targets legit businesses. See if there's anyone we can squeeze coming out of his brothel. Not easy but not complicated." Brando said, he smokes his cigarette. He starts fitting his mods to his armor and cybernetics.
Alice watches him work, her eyes following his movements. "You know, you seem to have a knack for this. Are you sure you weren't an engineer in a past life?"
Brando grins, securing the last mod in place. "Nah, just a soldier with a gift for tinkering. Take something apart, put it back together. It's not rocket science." He flexes his cybernetic arm, the mods glinting in the dim light. "Now, let's see if you can do the same with that tablet of yours."
Alice raises an eyebrow, a playful smirk on her lips.
"Is that a challenge, Rek?" She pulls her tablet from her jacket, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Let's see if this old thing can still handle the heat."
She turns her attention to the tablet, her fingers dancing over the screen as she pulls up a series of maps and surveillance feeds. She's a natural, her hands moving with the same confidence and ease as a pianist playing a beloved piece.
Brando watches her work, a sense of warmth and admiration swelling in his chest. He's seen a lot of good soldiers in his time, but there's something about Alice that sets her apart.
