Chapter 1: Introduction
In the sleek, modern world of downtown New York, Mehdi and Ashraf had built a palace of glossy marble and mirrors, where their lives shimmered in infinite reflection. Tonight, though, as they danced to the thumping beat of the club, even the mirrored walls couldn't catch all the shades of doubt and confusion that played across their faces.
The pulsing lights danced around Mehdi's brown eyes as he watched Ashraf, her inky tresses bouncing with every step. They had always been the epitome of a power couple, but something was different tonight.
"Everything okay?" Ashraf asked, noticing the furrow in Mehdi's brow.
"Just thinking about, you know, work stuff," Mehdi replied casually, slipping a hand around her waist, pulling her closer.
Ashraf's gaze lingered on him, her eyes trying to discern the truth he was hiding. A few moments passed before she nodded her understanding. Their bodies swayed in tandem as they allowed the music to soothe their worries, the pulse of the beat luring them into its rhythm.
But as the night progressed, neither of them could shake off the inexplicable feeling of disorientation that gnawed at the edges of their consciousness.
It started subtly, a slight sense of unease that grew with each passing hour. For Mehdi, it began with the softness of his body, the way his hips swayed naturally to the rhythm of the music, a motion he found himself unrehearsed but oddly comfortable in.
As for Ashraf, she found herself losing the urge to smother her lips in a bold red shade, instead opting for a more masculine brow pencil to emphasize her arches.
The subtle shifts were gradual, often imperceptible to others, but they stung like a thousand needles pricking against her self-image.
Days turned into weeks, the changes growing more pronounced. Mehdi's waist whittled, his shoulders broadened, and his facial features softened. Ashraf's hips widened, her shoulders slumped, and her complexion deepened. They noticed each other's transformations but chose to remain silent, wondering if they could push the surreal experience into the realm of imagination.
Mehdi saw Ashraf's strong jawline soften, the sharp angles of her face rounding out, and her moody eyes mutating into a lighter, softer hue. Ashraf observed Mehdi's sharp jawline fade, the corners of his eyes starting to crease, and the once trimmed beard sparse and prickly upon his skin.
One morning, as they stood face-to-face in their opulent bathroom, a mirror reflecting the collision of their identities, they realized their shared reality. The silence was broken by a choked whisper from Ashraf.
"Mehdi...I don't know what's happening, but I think...I think we're changing."
Mehdi's eyes flashed in the mirror, widening in shock. "Changing?" he questioned, his voice barely audible.
"I think we're transforming into the opposite sex," Ashraf said, her voice wavering with disbelief.
Mehdi stared at himself in the mirror, his gaze falling upon the softened contours of his body.
He swallowed hard before forcing out a single word. "Why?"
Ashraf leaned against the marble counter, seemingly as fragile as the crystalline veneer of their lives. "I don't know," she admitted wearily. "But I think it has something to do with those pills we've been taking."
With every syllable that left her mouth, the memory of the bottle came back to poke at their brewing suspicions.
