Chapter 1: Introduction
The clash of steel and the roar of battle were as familiar to Prince Adrian as the warmth of his castle's hearth. Yet, as he stood on the parapet, his heart pounding like a drum, he knew this was different. The horizon was a sea of enemy banners, a tide of destruction barreling toward his kingdom. Their numbers were overwhelming, their fury unchecked. Panic gripped him like a vice, yet Adrian steeled himself, refusing to let fear dictate his actions.
Below him, his men fought valiantly, their shields forming a wall against the invading army.
But for every enemy they struck down, another seemed to rise, like some grotesque parody of a spring harvest. The castle gates groaned under the onslaught, the once-proud fortifications now little more than splinters and rubble.
Adrian's gaze fell on a flask tucked into his belt, a last resort gifted to him by the kingdom's eccentric alchemist. He had scoffed at the notion of a potion that could alter one's appearance, but now, with the enemy at his doorstep, he saw no other choice. He grabbed the flask, uncorked it, and downed its contents in one swift gulp.
It tasted like liquid fire, burning a path down his throat and igniting a heat in his stomach. The world around him spun, colors blurring into a kaleidoscope of chaos. When his vision cleared, he looked down at his body, now draped in the flowing silks of a woman's gown. He gasped, his hand reaching up to touch his face, his once-square jaw now soft and rounded, his dark hair cascading in loose curls down his back.
"What in the name of all the gods...?" he murmured, his voice higher, softer.
The liquid burned like liquid fire, coursing through his veins, a sensation that was both agonizing and invigorating. He staggered, his vision swimming, as his body began to transform. Muscles shifted, bones realigned, and he felt a strange, hollow sensation in his chest. When his vision finally cleared, he looked down to see curves where there had once been hard lines, and fabric where there should have been armor.
With a shaky hand, he touched his face, feeling the softness of skin where there had been stubble. His reflection in the polished surface of his fallen shield was startling—long dark hair, full lips, and wide, terrified blue eyes.
