Chapter 3: Midnight Revelation
The neon slice through the curtains painted a garish orange line across the rumpled duvet. Arthur lay rigid, watching it trace the curve of Vivian’s bare shoulder. Her skin looked waxy in the half-light. The smell of her jasmine lotion clashed with the sharper, sour notes of sweat and the faint, lingering tang of the whiskey he’d rinsed from his mouth.
Sleep was a country he could not enter. His mind was a sealed room playing one film on a loop. The wet sounds from the headphones. The muscles in Darius’s back. The charged quiet of the house now was just the pause before the next reel.
His phone, face-down on his nightstand, vibrated against the wood.
A low, grinding hum.
Arthur did not move. He counted the vibrations. Six. A notification, not a call. It could be anything. A spam email. A calendar reminder for a dental cleaning.
It buzzed again. A second notification, sharper, more insistent.
Slowly, as if moving through deep water, he rolled onto his side. He picked up the phone. The screen glared in the dark.
One new email. The sender was a different, random string: k7p23s1@tormail.net.
The subject line was blank.
He tapped it. The message contained a single line of text: Live a little.
Below it, a video attachment. The thumbnail was a blur of motion and skin. The timestamp read 11:47 PM. Just over an hour ago.
His thumb hovered. The bedroom was silent except for Vivian’s slow breathing. He plugged in his headphones, the cord snaking across the pillow like a vein. He tapped the video.
The footage was grainier this time, darker. The camera angle was low, looking up. The kitchen. The lens was partially obscured by the fruit bowl on the island. His fruit bowl.
Vivian walked into frame. She was wearing the silk kimono robe he’d bought her for her birthday, the one she said was too loud. It was hanging open. Underneath, just a black lace thong. Her movements were loose, liquid. She poured two glasses of red wine from a bottle he didn’t recognize.
Darius entered. He was shirtless, his torso a topography of muscle in the dim under-cabinet lighting. He took a glass, drank from it, then set it down. He said something Arthur couldn’t make out, a low rumble. Vivian laughed, tossing her head back.
Then Darius’s hands were on her hips, spinning her gently to face the island. He pushed the fruit bowl aside. It scraped against the marble. With a single, practiced motion, he hooked his thumbs into the sides of her thong and pulled it down to her knees. He bent her forward, her blonde hair spilling over the cold stone countertop. One of her hands splayed flat; the other reached back, gripping his denimed thigh.
Arthur’s breath stopped in his throat. He was painfully hard.
Darius unzipped. He didn’t bother with foreplay. He positioned himself and pushed into her in one smooth, brutal stroke.
Vivian’s mouth opened in a silent cry, then a sharp, choked gasp that the microphone picked up perfectly. Her eyes squeezed shut, then flew open, staring at nothing as he established a rhythm. The camera, from its low angle, captured the obscene, stretching union, the raw physicality of it. The slap of skin, the groan of Darius’s voice, the rhythmic creak of the island cabinet taking the weight.
“Fuck, yes,” Vivian moaned, her voice ragged, transforming into something guttural. “Just like that.”
Arthur watched, unable to look away. He watched Darius’s hands grip her hips, possessive and hard. He watched her own painted nails dig into his leg. He watched her face, contorted in a pleasure so profound it was like watching a stranger. This wasn’t the bored theatrics of their marriage. This was hunger. Consumption.
The climax, when it came, was a violent shudder that ran through both of them. Darius cursed, a sharp, final word. Vivian let out a high, broken sound as he collapsed over her, both of them breathing in ragged unison.
The video ended.
Arthur pulled the headphones out. The silence they left was absolute and crushing. The glow from the phone screen illuminated his trembling hands.
He looked at Vivian, sleeping peacefully inches away. He saw a faint purple mark, a bruise or a love bite, on the side of her neck, hidden by her hair. He hadn’t noticed it before.
A cold, clear thought cut through the static of his shame: The kitchen. An hour ago. While I was lying here.
He got out of bed. The floorboards were cold under his feet. He walked downstairs in the dark, his path memorized. The house smelled different now. Not just of jasmine and dust. There was a new scent layered beneath the cleaning products: sex, wine, a faint trace of a spicy cologne that wasn’t his.
He flipped on the kitchen light. Harsh fluorescence flooded the space.
Everything was mostly in order. The wine glasses were in the sink, rinsed but not washed. A single drop of red wine, like a blood tear, stained the lip of one. The fruit bowl was slightly off-center on the island. He ran his fingers over the cool marble where her cheek had been pressed. It was clean.
He opened the trash compactor. On top of the usual debris was the cork from the wine bottle. A fancy label. A vintage he wouldn’t know to buy. Deeper, rummaging past coffee grounds and an empty yogurt container, his fingers touched something lace. He pulled it out.
The black thong. Torn at the side seam.
He held it for a moment, the delicate fabric absurd in his large, accountant’s hand. He lifted it to his nose and sniffed. He could smell the sweet tang of his wife's pussy mixed with another muskier odor. Looking closely, he could clearly discern cum stains along the side of the crotch. Remains from when Darius had pulled them aside and fucked her from behind.
Responding to a sudden urge, he raised the panties to his mouth and ran his tongue across the stains, tasting the salty taste of Darius' jizz mixed with Vivian's secretions. Then, overcome with lust, he stuffed the panties in his mouth and sucked on the stains as he pulled out his cock and jerked off once again. He finished quickly and dropped the torn panties back into the trash in tortured shame. What was wrong with him?
The question pulsed through Arthur’s mind like a sick heartbeat as he stood in the kitchen, his body still trembling from the shameful release. He stared down at the trash compactor, the lid slightly ajar, the torn thong now buried beneath coffee grounds and orange peels. The scent of his own release hung in the air, mingling with the lingering musk of sex and Darius’s cologne.
He wiped his jizz off the kitchen floor and crept back into the bedroom. Vivian lay there in the bed sleeping peacefully and oozing satisfaction. He had seen the way she had orgasmed with Darius. He had never seen her cum like that with him before.
A part of him understood Vivian and didn't blame her for her indiscretions. Arthur was simply and inadequate lover. He couldn't satisfy her the way she needed. He understood that now.
The realization was a blade sliding between his ribs, not with the heat of anger, but with the cold certainty of truth. Vivian had never been satisfied with him. Not in bed, not in life. He had spent years pretending that their marriage was just a quiet, functional thing—like a well-kept ledger, balanced and predictable. But ledgers didn’t bleed. They didn’t moan and beg and come undone beneath the weight of another man’s body.
Arthur sat on the edge of the bed, his hands clasped between his knees, staring at the dark shape of his wife’s sleeping form. The sheets had slipped down, exposing the smooth curve of her shoulder, the delicate line of her collarbone.
Arthur traced the outline of her body with his eyes, memorizing the way the lamplight caught the faint golden down on her skin. She looked so fragile like this, so vulnerable. But he knew better. Vivian was never fragile. She was a storm wrapped in silk, a woman who took what she wanted and left the wreckage behind.
He reached out, his fingers hovering just above her skin. He didn’t touch her. He couldn’t. Not after what he’d seen. Not after what he’d done. The memory of the torn thong, the taste of her on his tongue, the way his own body had betrayed him—it all coiled in his gut like a living thing.
He loved his wife. More, he worshipped the ground she walked on. He needed her and would do anything not to lose her. How could he prevent her from leaving him?
