Chapter 4: Game over

With every step Ranma took toward the Tendo Dojo, there was the insistent tightening and loosening around her midriff, a near-constant reminder of her fate. Her mind lingered on its occupant, a mix of anger and apprehension curling within her.

Ranma’s left foot touched the first of the steps leading up to the old-fashioned Japanese house, and the creak of the step added to the symphony of sounds that painted the scene.

The nearby noises of Tokyo melded with the rhythmic kiais and the faint thudding of martial art practice inside the dojo.

Upon entering, there was no hiding her predicament—the baby bump was starkly evident, a constant mark of her entrapment in her girl form. The air in the dojo was filled with something other than perspiration and the echoing calls of her fellow martial artists. It was tension.

“Tsk, tsk,” Happosai called out in a cat-like purr, emerging from behind a partition.

The wiry, old pervert’s mischievous squint and impish grin oozed malevolence, like an ill-advisedly opened jar of questionable substances found deep within the recesses of a refrigerator.

Fists clenched in barely concealed anger, Ranma stood her ground. “I can’t believe I let you talk me into this, you twisted old bastard.”

The grin widened on Happosai’s face as his gaze lingered on the unmistakable evidence of his misdeed.

“Oh, don’t be like that! It’s not every day you get to experience the joys of motherhood!”

Barely containing her fury, Ranma crossed her arms. “That’s not the point, and you know it! Now I’m stuck like this, and when my child is born, I won’t be able to change back!”

Her voice cracked mid-sentence, something that would never have happened if she still inhabited her male form. The difference in her strength, her physique, her very identity was enough to make her head spin.

Even more so, the knowledge that she would never again enjoy the freedom and power of her former self made her want to scream.

Happosai—that wizened fiend smirked, “Stuck, indeed! But is it so terrible, my dear child, to be confined to this beautiful, tantalizing form? You will be the envy of both men and women alike!”

Ranma gritted her teeth.

This was just like Happosai to revel in turning her world upside down.

”Ah, to be young again,” Genma Saotome announced his presence, emerging from the training area with a wry smile upon his face. Even though Genma was supposedly here to train and take care of his son, he’d been mysteriously absent when all of this madness had transpired.

Avoiding eye contact with bothGenma and Happosai, Ranma lifted her gaze to find another familiar face.

Akane Tendo, youngest daughter of the Tendo family, was working on a floor mat. Beads of sweat glistened as they slid down her sun-kissed skin, eventually dropping from her slender figure.

Ranma couldn't help but watch the tiny droplets hit the floor of the Tendo Dojo, now much more accustomed to the sight of a female body than ever before.

Akane's eyes met Ranma's with a fire in them.

Ranma didn't need to see the scowl on her face to know it was there—she felt it. They had never really seen eye to eye, but now, Ranma didn't know what would happen with this sudden change between them. There was attraction, but there was also hatred—a complicated tangle of emotions that neither was willing to deal with.

"You've gotta be kidding me," Akane muttered, stopping in her tracks and wiping her damp brow. Her fists were clenched at her sides, shoulders tense.

Ranma waited for what Akane would say next, but the younger girl simply shook her head.

“How could you, Ranma? You really did this?” In Akane’s voice, there was a mix of betrayal, disgust, and perhaps something more—curiosity.

Before she could ponder further, Soun Tendo, father to the Tendo sisters, walked out from his office. As usual, he feigned ignorance, clearing his throat as he took in the fraught atmosphere with a practiced ease.

“Oh, I see.

I see,” Soun murmured, eyebrows twitching in what almost looked like approval—a reaction Ranma found puzzling, to say the least.

Soun Tendo's beady eyes shifted between Happosai, Genma, and Ranma, before finally settling on Akane. “Well then, I suppose some introductions and adjustments are in order.”

The old man shuffled toward the small table near the entrance of the dojo. It was piled with papers, teacups, and a large, ornate box that Ranma had never seen before.

Soun patted the space next to him and beckoned for Akane to come closer.

Intrigued, Akane hesitantly obeyed, if only to figure out what her father was up to now. Happosai and Genma Saotome hung around the dojo entrance, as if hesitant to get any closer. The tension lingered intensely in the air as Ranma approached the table, her footsteps accompanied by an eerie silence.

As she settled into the traditional Japanese seating opposite Akane, her mind raced with questions about the ornate box.

Her father, Soun Tendo, broke the quiet with an exaggerated sigh. "Well then, I suppose introductions are in order, even if slightly overdue."

Clearing her throat, Akane crossed her arms, scrutinizing Ranma as if trying to decipher a difficult riddle. Her gaze drifted towards Ranma's ever-prominent belly before lingering on the still-unfamiliar curves of her upper body.

The curve of her chest, and the way her shoulders tapered into a narrow waistline. She couldn't help but acknowledge the change, despite her efforts to resist it.

With a deliberate flick of his wrist, Soun Tendo opened the ornate box, revealing a plethora of items nestled inside its velvet lining. The contents seemed carefully selected, from pieces of ancient jewelry to ceremonial fans—all treasures handed down through generations of Tendos.

Akane arched an eyebrow, watching her father sift through the items with practiced ease. She couldn’t help but be on edge, her heart beating just a little bit faster in her chest.

“Yes, indeed,” Soun said as he carefully extracted a silver bracelet. The ornate wiring held what appeared to be jade stones, shimmering with age and a strange energy.

Ranma’s breath hitched as she felt this energy. It snaked around her like an unwanted touch, the hairs on her arm pricking to attention.

The bracelet looked exquisite, yet there was an unnerving quality to it, its very existence at once enticing and disquieting.

Soun Tendo, seemingly unaware of his daughter and Ranma's instinctive reactions, chose that moment to address them both. "As you are both well aware, this unfortunate, er, change has taken place. As the Tendo family head and an experienced martial artist, I must ensure everyone's well-being under this roof."

His gaze settled heavily on the expectant young woman before him.

"Akane, you have been my daughter, and a skilled martial artist in your own right. And now, I entrust you with a task unthinkable in the past. As the one who shares this house with my good friend Genma, I ask that you take care of my friends son, well former son who, as you know, is currently experiencing an unexpected reality."

Akane's eyes widened, giving her a deer-in-headlights look that somehow made her seem even more vulnerable and innocent in Ranma's eyes. She stammered, trying to string her words together.

"B-b-but father, I—I can't possibly—"

Soun remained unperturbed and continued, matter-of-factly. "You have always shared a special bond, a riveting, spirited relationship."

Nomally, such words would elicit flames from Akane's face as she rebuffed any hint of romantic interest. This time, however, there was only a profound, perplexing silence as they both tried to process the significance of change.

Soun pressed on, tapping the silver bracelet thoughtfully against his opposite palm.

"Akane, I ask you to aid Ranma—nay, her female form, Ranma-chan—in navigating this profound change." Soun's unwavering eyes bore into Akane's, urging her to understand, to accept. "Your training will be vital to protecting both her and the unborn child."

Akane's chest tightened, breath hitching at the gravity of her father's words.

Ranma stood up, her swollen belly sticking out in front of her “I don’t need protecting” she insisted as her former manly pride came to a head.

Soun raised a placating hand. “No, no, I didn’t mean it that way. But you still have a lot to learn about your new form, Ranma-chan. And Akane, I trust you can help her adjust.”

The weight of this unexpected responsibility settled on Akane’s shoulders, and she fought the urge to sink beneath the table. She was still reeling from her father’s words, and the prospect of dealing with Ranma-chan on a daily basis left her off-kilter.

She stammered through her answer.
