Chapter 8: Morning After

The first grey light of dawn found Velanna awake, her body a map of pleasant aches. She lay on her side, the rough wool blanket pooled at her waist, her fingertips tracing a pale, knotted scar that cut across Conor’s sternum. It was a old thing, from a blade that had slipped past a guard in the Alienage, a lifetime ago. He slept with a stillness that was not peaceful, but poised, like a spring under tension.

As she traced the line, his mismatched eyes opened, not drowsily, but with immediate, clear awareness. He didn’t startle; he simply looked at her.

A slow flush crept up Velanna’s neck. She looked away, focusing on a crack in the stone ceiling. “I… I must have sounded like a fool last night,” she muttered, the words gritty with sleep and embarrassment. “The sounds I made. The faces. It was undignified.”

Conor’s hand came up, calloused fingers gently turning her chin back toward him. His smile was a lazy, warm thing. “Those sounds were the most arousing thing I’ve heard since the last time I sharpened my blades. That’s the only reason I kept going. Wanted to hear the symphony.”

She chuckled, a low, rusty sound, and the tension in her shoulders eased. “I’ve never been… handled like that. As if you were mapping me. Learning a new terrain.”

“You felt amazing,” he said, the simplicity of the statement cutting through any remaining awkwardness. “Every inch.”

Her gaze softened, her fingers moving from his chin to his cheek, then to the corner of his eyes. She studied them—one blue as a summer sky, the other the deep brown of rich earth. “I see it in you now,” she whispered. “The pain. The struggle. It’s like you’ve lived a thousand lives already in just these nineteen years. I never asked. How old are you?”

“Nineteen,” he repeated, his own hand sliding from her arm down the powerful curve of her side, coming to rest on the firm, flat plane of her belly.

Velanna barked a short, genuine laugh. “Creators. There’s a gap. I feel ancient.”

“You feel perfect,” he countered, his fingers drawing idle, widening circles around her navel. “And you look it. Every muscle is a lesson. I’ve seen you fight. It’s art.”

“Says the master of all four disciplines,” she said, but there was a pleased edge to her voice. Her own hand explored the dense, corded muscle of his shoulder, the tactical landscape of his chest and abdomen. “This isn’t just practice. This is survival etched into flesh.”

He hummed in agreement, leaning in to brush his lips against her collarbone. “We should make time for more survival. Before this business with the Keep and the Architect is done.”

“We should,” she agreed, her voice dropping to a whisper.

He glanced toward the high window, where the grey was lightening to a bruised purple. “Sun’s still thinking about it. Got time.”

She smiled, a real, unguarded smile that transformed her sharp features. Then she shifted, rolling onto her stomach, presenting the elegant, strong line of her back to him.

Conor took the invitation. He moved down, his hands spreading her, his mouth finding her with an intimacy that was both reverent and hungry. She gasped into the pillow, her fingers twisting in the sheet. He worked her with his tongue, slow and thorough, while his fingers slid around to find her wet and waiting. He touched her there, building a rhythm that was soon matched by the rocking of her hips.

Her first climax came quietly, a series of sharp, shuddering breaths against the linen, her whole body tightening like a drawn bow before going lax.

He didn’t let her come down. He moved over her, guiding himself into her from behind, her face still buried, her ass raised. This time, the sounds she made were louder, unfettered groans that echoed off the stone. He drove into her with a steady, deep cadence, one hand braced beside her head, the other gripping the muscle of her hip. She came again, a broken cry, and then a third time almost immediately after, her voice cracking on a sob of release as he felt her convulse around him.

He pulled her onto her side, facing away, curling his body around hers. He entered her again from this new angle, his arm wrapping around to cup her breast, his mouth on the sensitive juncture of her neck and shoulder. She turned her head, finding his lips with hers, and they kissed, deep and messy, as he thrust. Her back arched, pressing her against him, and he could see the defined muscles of her abdomen flexing and releasing with each heaving breath.

He was close. The coil in his gut pulled taut. “Velanna,” he gasped against her mouth.

She knew. She reached behind, her hand sliding between their bodies to cradle him, her fingers gently rubbing the tight, full sack beneath his shaft as he pulsed, spilling into her with a groan that was half relief, half triumph. The sensation was overwhelming, a wave of heat and electric sensitivity that made her curse fluently in Elvish.

For a moment, they were still, a tangled knot of limbs and sweat and shared breath.

Then the curse dissolved into a weak, breathless chuckle from her. He joined her, his laugh a low rumble in his chest against her back. They lay there in the growing light, the absurdity and the intensity of it all hanging in the air between them, a secret, sweeter than the victory of any battle.
