Chapter 1: Introduction
I thought a big city like this would be exciting and vibrant. Always awake, always humming to the beat of humanity thriving within it. But as I stood clutching my suitcases, staring at the long, fresh beige hallway stretching out before a creaking elevator, I couldn't help but sigh.
My family had just moved cross-country due to my dad's job. After a month of hectic searching, we'd finally settled on this modest apartment building, surrounded by a labyrinth of concrete and mysterious alleyways.
The cacophony of blaring horns and distant sirens lulled me to sleep each night, and the towering silhouette of the city brought me comfort in the otherwise suffocating anonymity. But even as I decorated my small bedroom with familiar photos, the loneliness clung to me, wrapping me in isolation.
Every morning, I ventured into the elevator, feeling the weight of the city pressing on me whenever the doors closed, and reluctantly heading to the ground floor.
On the third day, as I went down to get the mail, a woman stepped in right before the doors shut, breaking the silence.
She was enchanting and impossible to miss—an African-American lady whose beautiful brown skin glowed. She looked to be in her late twenties and was dressed in a stunning emerald dress, showing off her curves and sensuous grace. Her dark eyes were mesmerizing, and I timidly looked away, tracing the empty elevator floor with my gaze.
"Good morning," she greeted, a warm smile brightening her face.
I nervously returned her greeting, and she asked mischievously, "New to the building?"
I nodded, and she gracefully extended her hand. "I'm Lateesha, your neighbor."
The elevator lurched to a stop, and we walked out into the quiet lobby together. "Pleasure to meet you," I replied, unable to ignore the spark of curiosity she ignited.
She slipped a card into my hand.
"Let me know if there's anything you need. I know this place can feel overwhelming at first, but we have to stick together, right? In this concrete jungle." She winked and went off, leaving a delicious tingle in the pit of my stomach.
Yelaina, our wide-eyed and innocent protagonist, couldn't help but notice Lateesha's mysterious allure ever since she laid eyes on her.
It was an unspoken pull—a magnetic energy that struck a chord within her. Despite feeling out of her depth, Yelaina couldn't ignore the flicker of excitement Lateesha instilled.
Lateesha remained a constant presence in Yelaina's thoughts. She was an enigma that Yelaina yearned to unravel. With an air of sultry confidence, Lateesha dressed in a way that caught everyone's attention, strutting through the apartment halls with a knowing smirk.
But something about Lateesha seemed off to yelaina. The way she eyed her up and down. Her stare lingering a little too long on Yelaina’s chest.
The glint in her eye that betrayed something unnamable.
Yelaina couldn't help but think about Lateesha, her captivating energy seeping through their shared apartment walls. She'd caught bits of Lateesha's phone conversations from her small living room, unable to comprehend their passionate intensity.
There was an allure, a draw to Lateesha that confused Yelaina—she'd promised herself to be on guard when ever the woman was around.
