Chapter 5: The Pact: A Heroine's Compromise

The click-clack of Diana’s glittery heels echoed unnervingly loud on the cracked linoleum floor of the studio hallway. The air here was thick, a suffocating blend of stale cigarette smoke, cheap floral air freshener, and something vaguely metallic. It coated her tongue. Gone was the soft morning light of her apartment; here, flickering fluorescent tubes cast long, sickly shadows on walls plastered with faded posters – women in torn fishnets and vacant stares, frozen in exaggerated ecstasy. The scent she’d woken with – peaches and vanilla – seemed grotesquely amplified here, clashing violently with the underlying grime.

Her reflection in a grimy wall mirror startled her. The Wonder Sparkle outfit, so bright in her sleek apartment, looked garish and cheap under the harsh lights. The frilly pink minidress felt impossibly short. Her legs, once powerful columns, seemed thin beneath the striped stockings. Frail. The word whispered in her mind, a chilling counterpoint to the persistent jingle of her choker bell. When had she gotten so… slight? Protecting the vulnerable required agility, surely? But the tremor in her hands felt new.

A door slammed open further down the corridor. A man burst out, sweat gleaming on his bald head, his Hawaiian shirt straining over a considerable gut. His eyes, small and darting, locked onto Diana with predatory relief. "Sparkle! Thank god! You made it!" His voice was a nasal whine, cutting through the low hum of unseen machinery.

"Mr. Kozlov," Diana chirped, forcing her voice into its unnaturally high register. She twirled her wand nervously, the plastic star catching the sickly light. "You said… you said Candy Crush was in danger? Where is she? What requires Wonder Sparkle’s intervention?" The sugary moniker felt sticky on her lips.

Kozlov waved a dismissive, meaty hand. "Danger? Yeah, yeah, big danger. Walked out. Last minute. Got a better offer, the ungrateful bitch." He spat the words, his eyes raking over Diana’s diminished frame. "Left me high and dry. Scene’s booked, crew’s paid, talent’s waiting. Disaster!" He leaned closer, his breath smelling of stale coffee and onions. "You gotta step in, Sparkle. You’re the only one who can save this shoot. Your duty, right? Protecting the industry? Protecting us?"

Duty. The word resonated, cutting through the fog of unease. Protecting the vulnerable. Candy Crush was vulnerable, wasn’t she? Walking out sounded dangerous. And Kozlov… he looked desperate. Scared, even. Her mission was clear. Justice demanded action.

"But…" Diana hesitated, her gaze flickering past Kozlov to the dark doorway he’d emerged from. The faint sound of impatient male voices drifted out. "I am Wonder Sparkle. My powers are for… for love and justice. Not… not…" The word wouldn't come. What exactly was she stepping into? The dissonance vibrated, a low thrum beneath her ribs. The posters on the walls seemed to leer.

Kozlov seized her thin wrist. His grip was surprisingly strong, clammy. "Exactly! Justice! Candy walked out on her contract! That ain't justice! And love?" He gave a wheezing chuckle. "Honey, this scene is about love. Passionate love! You’ll be spreading joy, fulfilling fantasies! Isn't that your whole… sparkly deal?" He tugged her towards the doorway. "Come on, the guys are getting restless. Costume’s ready. Just like Candy’s, but smaller. Should fit you… perfectly now." His eyes lingered on her exposed collarbones.

Resistance flared, brief and sharp. This felt… wrong. Deeply, fundamentally wrong. Like trying to force her lasso around her own thoughts. She remembered the searing pain, the flickering images – the pendant, the laughter. Her head throbbed faintly. Was this stress? Or… something else? Protecting Kozlov? Was he vulnerable?

"Mr. Kozlov," she started, pulling back slightly. "Perhaps I could find Candy? Use my… my sparkle sense?" She raised her wand weakly.

"No time!" Kozlov barked, his desperation turning sharp. "Look, Sparkle, you wanna be a hero? Here’s your chance. Save the day. Save my day. Or," his voice dropped, oily and threatening, "maybe I tell everyone how Wonder Sparkle isn't so sparkly when the chips are down. How she let a whole production sink 'cause she got cold feet." He leaned in, his voice a conspiratorial whisper that reeked. "Think of the ladies who depend on this studio, Sparkle. Their livelihoods. You gonna let them down?"

The threat landed, twisting her programmed sense of duty. Letting down vulnerable women? Failing her mission? The fog thickened, smothering the flicker of doubt. Protecting Kozlov was protecting the others… wasn’t it? This was her calling. Her purpose. Close to the action. Close to the ladies she defended. Even if the action felt like quicksand.

She swallowed hard, the bell on her choker giving a tiny, defeated jingle. The sugary determination surged back, fueled by a desperate need to silence the inner scream. "Of course not! Wonder Sparkle never backs down from a challenge!" She forced a wide, vacant smile onto her glossed lips. "For Justice! And… and Passionate Love! Lead the way, Mr. Kozlov!"

Kozlov’s grin was triumphant, revealing stained teeth. "Attagirl! Knew you had the sparkle spirit!" He practically dragged her towards the dark doorway.

Inside, the room was hotter, the air thicker. Banks of harsh lights pointed towards a cheap-looking bed draped in garish red satin. Two bored-looking men in tank tops lounged nearby, their eyes instantly assessing Diana with detached professionalism. A camera operator fiddled with his lens. The scent of cheap cologne mixed nauseatingly with the pervasive studio stench.

"Here she is, boys! Candy Crush 2.0 – Wonder Sparkle!" Kozlov announced, shoving Diana forward. She stumbled slightly on her high heels, catching herself against a flimsy prop nightstand. The men looked unimpressed.

"Skinny," one muttered.

"Outfit’s whack," said the other. "Where’s the leather? The chains?"

Kozlov waved them off. "She’s fresh! Innocent! It’s a sparkle angle! Now, Sparkle, wardrobe’s through there." He pointed to a curtained alcove. "Get changed. Candy’s stuff is hanging up. Hurry! Time is money, and money is… well, everything!"

Diana stared at the flimsy curtain. Beyond it lay… the costume. Candy Crush’s costume. Her duty. Her calling. The dissonance roared, a hurricane trapped inside her fragile ribcage. The wand trembled in her hand. The bell jingled softly as she took a shaky breath. For Justice. For the vulnerable. For Kozlov.

She pushed aside the curtain. Hanging on a bare wire hanger was a garment that made her Wonder Sparkle minidress look demure. Scraps of black lace, straps thinner than spider silk, buckles that promised discomfort. It looked less like clothing and more like a trap.

Her reflection in the small, cracked mirror inside the alcove showed a face painted like a doll’s, eyes wide with a terror she couldn't quite name. Princess Diana of Themyscira was a ghost in those blue depths. Only Wonder Sparkle remained, staring back, pale and trembling.

She reached out a thin, trembling hand. The lace felt cold. Synthetic. The scent of peaches and vanilla choked her. Outside, Kozlov yelled, "Chop chop, Sparkle! Places! Let's make some magic!"

The wand slipped from her fingers, clattering to the floor, its plastic star pointing accusingly back at her. She didn't pick it up. Slowly, mechanically, her fingers closed around the hanger. The tiny bell on her choker gave one last, faint jingle as she pulled the curtain shut behind her, sealing herself into the suffocating alcove with the costume and the crushing weight of her distorted duty. The roar inside her skull drowned out everything else.
