Chapter 1: The Transparency Proposal
The scent of lemongrass and pine cleaner hung in the air, a familiar comfort. Mei Lin ran her cloth in slow, concentric circles over the glass conference table, watching her reflection warp and straighten with each pass. Her mind, however, was far from the sterile office. It was tangled in the soft, floral scent of Ingrid’s shampoo, lingering in a supply closet they’d shared an hour before.
In her daydream, the closet was smaller, warmer. Ingrid’s laughter, usually so bright and open, was a low, conspiratorial whisper. “Your hands are so careful, Mei,” the fantasy Ingrid murmured, her Swedish accent like melted honey. A strong, graceful finger would hook under Mei Lin’s chin, tilting her face up. The fantasy dissolved the space between them until all Mei Lin could see were those piercing blue eyes, flecked with grey like a winter sky. The touch would travel, not to her uniform collar, but to the top button of her own blouse, popping it open with a teasing slowness that made Mei Lin’s breath catch in her throat. She imagined the sound of the fabric sighing open, the fall of Ingrid’s blonde hair against bare skin—
“Lin! Ingrid!My office. Now.”
Mr. Abernathy’s voice shattered the reverie like a stone through glass. Mei Lin jerked, her cloth squeaking on the pristine surface. She saw Ingrid across the room, frozen mid-polish of a chair leg. Ingrid met her gaze, rolled her eyes comically, and shrugged. The casual gesture sent a familiar, painful thrum through Mei Lin’s chest. She was so utterly unafraid.
They filed into the executive conference room. It was a cavern of implied power. The mahogany table gleamed like a dark lake under the relentless fluorescent lights. The floor was a mirror, reflecting their modest, practical shoes and the stern, framed portrait of the CEO that watched from the far wall.Mr. Abernathy stood before the window, his silhouette cut out against the city’s twilight grid. He didn’t turn.
“Close the door.”
Ingrid did, leaning against it with an easy hip. Mei Lin stood rigid, hands clasped in front of her grey tunic.
“A sensitive situation has arisen,” Abernathy began, his voice dry and precise. “Confidential documents are missing from the secure shredding bin. The logs show only two cleaners accessed this wing after hours last night. You two.”
“We emptied all the bins, sir. Straight to the industrial shredder in the basement,” Ingrid said, her tone respectful but firm.
“The documents were not in the shredder. They were photographed. The security sweep indicates no electronic devices entered or left, aside from your approved cleaning equipment. Therefore, the breach was physical. The information was memorized or transcribed.”
He finally turned. His eyes, the color of old chalk, scanned them without a trace of warmth. “Standard protocol for a breach of this nature is a full search of person and effects. Given the timing and the nature of the missing data, corporate security has mandated an enhanced verification. You will submit to a physical search. Now.”
Mei Lin’s blood ran cold. “A search… sir?”
“Your lockers have already been cleared. Your uniforms and personal belongings will be confiscated for the duration of the investigation. You will complete your remaining shift to maintain continuity and will be monitored. This is non-negotiable. Proceed.”
The air vanished from the room. Mei Lin’s ears rang. She looked at Ingrid, whose easy slouch had straightened. A flicker of something—anger, disbelief—passed over her features before they smoothed into a mask of resigned professionalism.
“All of it, sir?” Ingrid asked, one blonde eyebrow arched.
“All of it.Every item. You will place everything in the provided bags. You will then resume your duties. This is about eliminating variables. The faster you comply, the faster this is resolved.”
Two large, sterile plastic bags lay on the edge of the enormous table. The command hung in the antiseptic air.
Ingrid sighed, a short, sharp exhale. Then, with a shake of her head, she reached for the hem of her tunic. In one fluid motion, she pulled it up and over her head, her hair mussing slightly. She wasn’t wearing an undershirt. Her bra was simple, practical white cotton. Her hands went behind her back, and the clasp came free. She dropped the garments into the bag without ceremony, then hooked her thumbs into the waistband of her grey trousers.
Mei Lin stood paralyzed, a statue of horror and disbelief. This couldn’t be happening. Her face was on fire, a prickling heat that spread down her neck and across her chest. She watched, unable to look away, as Ingrid pushed her trousers and plain cotton underwear down her hips in a single movement, stepping out of them and kicking them lightly into the bag. She then bent, a smooth, unhurried arc of muscle and pale skin, to remove her socks. She straightened, fully nude, and faced Abernathy, who observed with the clinical detachment of a scientist examining slides.
Ingrid’s body was as Mei Lin had imagined, yet so much more potent in reality. She was tall and solidly built, with the strong shoulders and capable arms of someone who worked physically. Her waist nipped in before flaring to generous hips and full, rounded thighs. Her skin was like fresh cream, dotted with a few faint freckles across her shoulders and the swell of her breasts. She was breathtakingly, nonchalantly real. She shook her hair out, the platinum strands falling around her shoulders, and looked at Mei Lin with a ‘well, get on with it’ expression.
“Miss Lin. Your compliance is required,” Abernathy said, his voice slicing through Mei Lin’s panic.
Trembling began in her hands, a fine vibration that felt like it would shake her apart. With fingers that felt thick and clumsy, she fumbled for the buttons of her own tunic. Each one was a trial. The soft ‘pop’ of each fastener sounded deafening. She felt Ingrid’s eyes on her, and Abernathy’s, and the painted eyes of the CEO in the portrait. She peeled the fabric from her shoulders, letting it fall. The cool air of the over-conditioned room hit her skin, raising goosebumps. She was smaller, finer-boned than Ingrid. Her own simple bra was black. She undid the clasp at the front, a small mercy, and let it fall open before sliding the straps down her arms. She kept her eyes fixed on the bag on the table as she dropped it in.
The worst was next. She unzipped her trousers, the sound obscenely loud. She pushed them down over her hips, her underwear following. She stepped out, quickly, feeling the icy polish of the floor beneath her bare feet. She added the small pile of fabric to the bag. She was naked. Completely exposed in the gleaming, harshly lit room. The humiliation was a live wire in her gut, twisting and sparking. But beneath it, a treacherous, electric current pulsed at the knowledge that Ingrid was seeing her, all of her.
Abernathy stepped forward, sealed the bags with a zip-tie, and labeled them with a sharpie. “You will resume your duties on the executive floor. The cameras are active. Complete your sections. Do not attempt to leave or cover yourselves. Is that understood?”
“Yes, sir,” Ingrid said, her voice even.
Mei Lin could only manage a tight, jerky nod.
“Proceed.”
He left, carrying the bags of their clothing, sealing them out of their old identities. The door hissed shut behind him.The silence was profound. Mei Lin stood, arms crossed tightly over her chest, staring at the floor, at her own bare feet on the reflective surface. She could see the blurred, inverted reflection of Ingrid’s legs beside her.
“Well,” Ingrid said, her voice a quiet scrape in the quiet room. “This is a first.”
Mei Lin dared a glance. Ingrid was already walking toward the cleaning cart they’d left in the hallway, her stride no different than if she were fully clothed. The muscles in her back shifted with each step, the curve of her spine a graceful line that disappeared into the full swell of her hips. Her ponytail swung, a metronome of forced normality.
“Come on, Mei,” Ingrid said, not unkindly, from the doorway. “The faster we work, the faster we get out of here.”
Numb, Mei Lin followed. The cart’s handle was cool under her palm. The corridors, usually empty at this hour, felt like vast, exposed canyons. Every imagined eye from every darkened office window was upon them. Her skin felt hyper-alive, tingling with vulnerability.
They returned to the conference room they’d been cleaning. Ingrid picked up her polisher and microfibre cloth, moving to the far end of the table. Mei Lin mechanically retrieved her own cloth. The work was the same, but every sensation was magnified a thousandfold. The brush of her own arm against her side, the draft from the ventilation system on her bare skin, the unyielding pressure of the floor against her soles.
And she couldn’t stop watching Ingrid.
From her position, she had a profile view. Ingrad worked with a focused efficiency, her movements economical and sure. She would bend to spray polish, the powerful line of her back and the firm curve of her rear unveiled. She would stretch to reach the center of the vast table, the muscles of her abdomen tightening, the full weight of her breasts shifting with the motion. A sheen of sweat began to glisten on her skin under the lights, tracing the valley between her shoulder blades, highlighting the softness of her flank.
Mei Lin’s initial terror began to sublimate, melted by the furnace of her own forbidden gaze. The shame was still there, a cold knot in her stomach, but it was now entwined with a desperate, aching fascination. Ingrid, in her stunning nonchalance, was more powerfully, devastatingly beautiful than any fantasy. She worked, utterly unselfconscious, a nude sculpture of unadorned womanhood brought to life in the most absurd and humiliating of circumstances. Mei Lin’s cloth moved in slow, forgotten circles as she watched the play of light on Ingrid’s shoulder, the flex of her calf as she shifted her weight, the way a stray, damp strand of blonde hair clung to the nape of her neck.
She was enraptured. And they still had two hours left on the shift.
