Chapter 2: Engraved in Shame
The steel door hissed shut behind him. Not a slam. Not a clang. A pressurized sigh, like airlock sealing. The heavy thunk of the bolt engaging vibrated through the worn soles of Grey's work boots and up his spine. Cold. Final.
The crimson light was thicker now, swallowing him whole. It pulsed out from unseen fixtures, staining the damp, cold air the colour of dried blood. The smell hit him next – overwhelmingly Rufus. Not just the expensive cologne from the street, but the raw, musky scent of the polar bear himself, deep and animalistic, clinging to everything in the small, square chamber. It mingled with dust, old paper, and something else… metallic. Oily. Like gunmetal left in the rain.
He couldn’t breathe. His chest tightened, panic a live wire sparking under his ribs. He whirled, claws scraping uselessly against the smooth, chilled steel of the door. No handle. No keypad. Just seamless metal, cool and mocking beneath his frantic paws. "No," he whispered, the sound swallowed by the oppressive silence. "No, no, no!" He hammered a fist against it. The impact was a dull, pathetic thud against the immovable surface. His knuckles stung. Futile.
His gaze snapped back into the room, scanning desperately. The crimson light made everything seem sinister, unreal. The walls were lined with bookshelves, but the volumes weren't just old; they looked ancient, leather bindings cracked and flaking, spines faded to unreadable ghosts. Dust motes danced like ash in the weird light. Trinkets sat on sagging shelves – tarnished brass instruments, odd-shaped stones, things that looked disturbingly like carved bones. But his eyes were dragged, magnetized, towards the center.
The spotlight.
It glared down onto a low, black pedestal. On it sat a single object, gleaming dully under the intense beam.
A collar.
Thick, black leather. Heavy-looking. Polished to a sinister sheen. It wasn’t crude. It was meticulously crafted, the edges smooth, the buckle a solid, unforgiving rectangle of brushed steel. And etched into the leather on the front, clear even in the crimson gloom, were two words:
FOR GREY.
His blood turned to ice water. His name. Engraved. Personal. His stomach, that hated potbelly he sucked in constantly, rolled violently. He tasted bile. Triple pay. Cash. The words echoed, now sounding like a predator’s lure. The warning about the basement wasn't just territorial; it was an invitation to this.
He took a step back, his shoulders hitting the cold steel door. The scent of Rufus was everywhere, suffocating. It was on the collar. It was on the… other things.
Arranged with chilling precision on a low table beside the pedestal were restraints. Not just any restraints. Cuffs. Ankle and wrist. Thick leather, matching the collar. Polished steel rings and buckles. Sized… sized specifically. For a cougar’s limbs. Beside them lay other implements he didn't want to identify – straps, a long coil of rope, something that looked like a leather hood with only eyeholes. All pristine. All waiting. All smelling faintly of oil and Rufus.
"Welcome to the vault, Grey."
The voice wasn’t loud. It boomed in the small, silent chamber. Deep, smooth, Rufus’s voice, but disembodied. Coming from hidden speakers, maybe? Grey flinched, pressing harder against the door, fur bristling.
"Bet you thought it was just dusty boxes down here," the voice continued, calm, almost amused. "Silly kitty. Couldn't resist the triple pay, could you? That little extra padding around the middle must cost a fortune in snacks." A low chuckle resonated. Grey could practically see the smirk. "Shouldn't have opened the door I told you not to touch. But I knew you would. You always were… curious. Weak."
Each word was a needle. Poking at his insecurities, his humiliation from the street encounter, his stupid, desperate need for the money. His chest hurt. His claws dug into his own palms.
"What... what is this?" Grey rasped, his voice tight with terror. "Let me out, Rufus! This isn't funny!"
"Funny?" The voice hardened, losing all trace of amusement. "This isn't a joke, kitty. This is consequence. This is where curiosity lands undisciplined pets." A beat. The crimson light seemed to pulse. "Look at the collar. It’s yours. Custom fitted. Go on. Touch it."
Grey shook his head violently, a low whine escaping his throat. "No. Fuck you. Let me OUT!"
"Touch it," the voice commanded, a sudden whip-crack of authority. "Or the air gets shut off next. Your choice. Suffocation's messy."
Panic flared, raw and blinding. Grey’s eyes darted wildly. No vents visible. Just the thick, cloying air. Was it getting thinner already? His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. Slowly, trembling uncontrollably, he pushed himself away from the door. One step. Then another. The spotlight felt hot on his fur. The collar gleamed, the etched words taunting him: FOR GREY. His name. His prison.
He reached out, his paw shaking violently. The leather was cool, surprisingly supple under his trembling fingertips, yet it radiated an undeniable weight. He traced the edge, the buckle. Solid. Unyielding. The scent of Rufus on it was overpowering, intimate. He snatched his paw back as if burned.
"Good kitty," the voice purred, satisfaction dripping from every syllable. "See? It fits the aesthetic. Drab fur, soft middle… needs defining. Needs control. You always did. Remember senior year? The wrestling match? How easily you folded? This is just… a more elegant solution."
Grey remembered. Rufus pinning him, effortless strength, the locker room laughter. The shame flooding him then felt like a preview for this suffocating dread. He backed up until he hit the door again, the cold steel a meager anchor. "Please," he whispered, the word tasting like ash. "Please let me go."
"Begging already?" Rufus's voice was a low rumble of delight. "Shows promise. But no. You opened the door. You entered my space. Now you learn the rules. The first rule: You wear what I provide."
Grey’s vision blurred. The crimson light swam. The collar on the pedestal seemed to glow with its own malevolent energy. His name burned into it. The restraints lay waiting, patient and predatory. The scent of Rufus filled his lungs with every terrified gasp. The heavy silence pressed in, broken only by the frantic, ragged sound of his own breathing and the low, satisfied hum emanating from the hidden speaker. He slid down the cold steel door, legs giving way, landing hard on the dusty floor. Trapped. Exposed. Exactly where Rufus wanted him. The lesson was just beginning.
