Chapter 1: Introduction
The apartment was bathed in the soft, warm glow of the recessed lighting, casting long, dramatic shadows across the cream-colored walls. The air was thick with the scent of expensive candles, a subtle hint of vanilla and something darker, more erotic. The silence was broken only by the distant hum of the city outside, a constant, low-level buzz that had long since become white noise to them.
Steven sat on the edge of their king-sized bed, his broad shoulders slumped forward, his elbows resting on his thighs.
He stared at the intricate pattern on the Persian rug, as if it held the answers to the questions swirling in his mind. Susan, in her classic power stance, stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her arms crossed over her chest, her gaze fixed on the city skyline. The night was alive with lights, reflecting off the glass and steel, a stark contrast to the quiet of their penthouse.
Steven cleared his throat, breaking the silence. "Susan, we need to talk."
She turned to face him, her expression unreadable. "I thought we were past the point of needing to schedule 'talks', Steven.
What's on your mind?" Susan asked, her voice a low purr, but there was an edge to it that Steven couldn't quite place. He looked up at her, his eyes reflecting the city lights outside.
"It's... it's about us. About me." He paused, his hands fidgeting with the hem of his shirt. He wanted to say it, to get it out in the open, but the words felt lodged in his throat.
Susan uncrossed her arms and walked towards him, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor. She sat down next to him on the bed, her skirt fanning out around her.
