Chapter 3: Rising Action

I asked, my voice low and smooth.

The Emperor leaned back in his throne, a thin smile playing on his lips. "They are the most skilled fighters in the Empire," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Really?" I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm."Tell me more."

The Emperor smiled at me patronizingly. "Oh yes," he said.

"These individuals are the very best of the best. They have been recruited from the farthest reaches of the Empire, each one possessing a unique set of skills and talents that can be utilized in our defense."

I leaned forward, interested. "And who are these skilled fighters?" I asked.

The Emperor leaned back in his throne, a look of amusement on his face. "Well," he said, spreading his hands wide...

"There's Nein, a member of the Black Iron Knights. He has been sent to rescue you."

Brooke's eyes widened in shock and hope. She tried to fight her way out of Esdeath's grasp, but it was no use. "Nein!" she cried out desperately, trying to break free.

But Esdeath only chuckled evilly and held her tighter as if taunting Brooke that there was nothing she could do to save herself or help Nein from being taken away by the Empire general.

The next few days were a blur for Brooke, as she was kept in Esdeath's chambers to serve her and attend to her every whim. Every day was filled with the same routine; waking up early in the morning to make breakfast for Esdeath, cleaning her bathroom, helping her dress and getting dressed herself if needed.

Brooke struggled to keep up with the task given to her as she was often reprimanded by Esdeath for performing them incorrectly.

She was constantly in fear of being punished, and it left her feeling helpless and alone.

"You're doing this all wrong," Esdeath said to Brooke as she struggled with ironing a wrinkled shirt.

"Let me show you how it's done properly."

Esdeath grabbed the iron and proceeded to press it down on the shirt with such force, leaving a series of dark marks across its surface.

"This is how it's done properly," she spat, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

I watched as Esdeath finished ironing the shirt, making sure every wrinkle was removed before placing it in the dresser.

She then turned to Brooke with a cruel smile on her face.

"You will be punished for your incompetence."

Brooke tried to back away, but Esdeath grabbed her arm and pulled her close.

"Don't you dare disobey me," Esdeath growled, her eyes flashing with anger.

Brooke was frozen in fear as she looked into the General's cold blue eyes. She could see the madness and rage boiling inside of her, and it made Brooke feel small and helpless.

She stood there, frozen in fear as Esdeath approached her.

The General's cold blue eyes locked onto hers, a cruel smile spreading across her lips. "You are nothing but a tool to me," she hissed through clenched teeth.

"A plaything, to be used and discarded at my whim.

You are nothing but a tool, no different from any of my other possessions.

You are merely a means to an end, to be used and discard once you have served your purpose.

Do not forget your place. I will not hesitate to remind you.

Now, about those punishments. You will begin with a whipping for your ineptitude."

Esdeath's voice was cold and hard as ice, it penetrated into the very core of my soul, leaving me feeling bruised and vulnerable.

"You will be punishing for your ineptitude," Esdeath said, her eyes flaring with malice.

My heart raced as I felt myself start to tremble, my mind racing with fear and despair. I had never been punished before, I didn't even know what to expect.

Esdeath grabbing me by the arm, pulling me to my feet. "You are nothing but meat to me," she spat, her breath reeking of rotten meat and decay.

"I will do with you as I please. You are mine to break, to twist, to use for my amusement."

I felt a surge of terror and disgust at her words, but I couldn't move. My body was heavy with exhaustion and pain, my mind clouded by the torture that had been inflicted upon me.

I had lost count of the number of times that Esdeath had whipped me, the sting of the lashes still fresh in my mind. Despite my efforts to plead for mercy, to beg her to stop, Esdeath seemed to take pleasure in my suffering. Her eyes would gleam with amusement as she raised the whip to strike, her grin revealing the pointed fangs that protruded from her mouth.

I knew that my life was in her hands, that there was nothing I could do to escape the fate that had been chosen for me.

I felt a sense of resignation wash over me, a sense that I was destined to become nothing more than a plaything for this monster.

As she walked away, leaving me alone in the cell, I could feel the weight of her gaze upon me, like a physical pressure that threatened to crush me. I knew that Esdeath was watching me, waiting for me to make the slightest misstep so that she could punish me. And I knew that she would. I had seen the way that she treated the other slaves who had done something to displease her.

I had watched as she had lashed out at the slightest provocation, wielding her whip with ruthless efficiency. I had heard the screams echoing through the halls, the cries of pain and anguish that were never quite silenced.

And now that fate had turned its eye on me, I found myself wondering how long it would be before I too felt the bite of her lash.

As the days passed, my anxiety grew.

I hated the thought of being a servant to Esdeath, hated the thought of being treated like a possession. But I had no choice. I was trapped in this hellhole, bound by chains of servitude.

One evening, as I was working in the garden, I heard footsteps approaching me. I turned around to see Esdeath standing behind me, a cruel smile spreading on her lips.

"You seem to be enjoying your work," she said in a mocking tone.

"But I assure you, dear Brooke, that it won't last forever.
