Chapter 1: The First Crack in the Facade

The late afternoon sun cut through the blinds in thick, dusty bars, striping the polished concrete floor of Dan Vance’s open-plan office. It hit the edge of his drafting table, warming the metal rule lying there. Around him, the controlled chaos of a thriving architecture firm hummed. Keyboards clacked a frantic rhythm. Low voices discussed load-bearing walls and client revisions over the whir of 3D printers. Someone laughed sharply near the espresso machine. The air smelled of fresh coffee, printer toner, and the faint, clean scent of marker pens.

Dan leaned back in his chair, rubbing the back of his neck. The structural report for the Kingston project lay open on his large monitor, dense paragraphs of engineering specs swimming before his eyes. He needed to sign off before five. Down the line, Sarah from interiors was waving a fabric swatch, trying to catch his eye. He gave her a quick nod – five minutes – and tapped his foot lightly, a metronome against the floor’s vibration.

His gaze drifted away from the screen, past the scale models and pinboards bristling with sketches, landing on his phone, face down. He didn't want to pick it up again. He should try and stay focused.

The structural equations blurred as he forced his eyes back to the screen, fingers tightening on the mouse, trying to anchor himself in concrete numbers, steel tolerances, the solid reality of load calculations. But the sharp scent of Marco’s espresso cut through the focus he was trying to rebuild, followed instantly by Marco himself, leaning over Dan’s desk, pointing urgently at a blueprint unfurled across the warm metal rule. "Dan, the client just called about the atrium glass—thermal stress specs are freaking them out; can you confirm the safety margin before five?"
