Chapter 1: Introduction
The air hung heavy as the door swung open, revealing a stark chamber bathed in the harsh glow of a single fluorescent light. A pallid figure stood resolute amidst the sterile expanse, framed by the imposing shadow of the interrogators looming behind her. Jane Doe, her honey-hued tresses cascading in waves around her shoulders, gazed impassively into the void before her.
Interrogator A, his visage obscured by shadows cast by the flickering illumination, studied Jane intently.
"We appreciate your cooperation," he said, his voice laced with a hint of sincerity. "Our aim is to maintain peace and order in our great nation. We believe you have valuable insights that can help us achieve that goal."
Jane's gaze remained unwavering, yet her heart fluttered at the deceptively soothing tone of his voice. Her lips parted slightly, revealing the faintest trace of vulnerability beneath her steely exterior. "I don't know what you want me to say," she murmured, her voice barely audible.
"I've told you everything I know."
Interrogator B stepped forward, his posture rigid and unyielding. "You haven't told us anything yet," he retorted, his tone laced with menace. "But we're willing to be patient. After all, it's not every day we get to question a member of the Resistance."
Jane winced, betraying the first sign of weakness since entering the room. She clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms, as she fought to maintain control over her trembling limbs.
"I have nothing to do with the Resistance," she spat out, defiance flashing in her eyes. "I'm just a simple girl trying to survive in this cruel world."
Interrogator A cocked his head to one side, scrutinizing her with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. "That may be true," he conceded, his voice dripping with doubt. "But you must understand that we need to be thorough in our investigations.
It's important to ensure that there is no threat to public safety," Interrogator A explained, his tone now more empathetic.
Jane hesitated, her eyes darting between the two interrogators. Their expressions were unreadable, but she couldn't shake off the feeling that they harbored hidden motives.
"So tell us, Jane, how did you become involved with the Resistance?" Interrogator B pressed, his tone growing stern.
"You know what we're talking about. Tell us how you became involved in the Resistance."
Jane swallowed hard, her throat parched from fear. "I swear, I'm not part of any Resistance. I just wanted to live my life without interference from anyone."
Interrogator A tilted his head, his expression a blend of sympathy and suspicion. "I understand that, Jane. But we need to make sure that you're not hiding something that could jeopardize the safety of our country. Now, please, answer our questions.
We won't hurt you if you cooperate with us," Interrogator A reassured her, his steady gaze boring into Jane's vulnerable heart.
Jane exhaled shakily, her resolve wavering under the weight of their relentless scrutiny. "I-I just don't remember what happened," she stammered, her voice quivering like a fragile leaf caught in a tempest. "I was just wandering around, looking for food and shelter.
One day, I met this guy named Tom, who claimed to be part of some underground group fighting against the government. He said that they were trying to liberate people from oppression and tyranny. That sounded good to me, so I decided to join them."
Interrogator A raised an eyebrow, his face etched with skepticism. "Tom? Is that his real name?"
Jane shrugged nonchalantly, her gaze drifting towards the dimly lit corner of the room. "I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. It could have been a code name or something.
Honestly, I didn't ask too many questions about him. Everyone else called him 'Leader', but I preferred sticking to what he introduced himself as - Tom. He never seemed much like a leader to me anyway. Just another dude with ideas, you know?
The interrogators exchanged glances, their faces locked in a battle of emotions. Interrogator A's cool demeanor betrayed hints of concern, while Interrogator B's piercing gaze seemed to drill through Jane's psyche. She squirmed uncomfortably in her seat, her legs crossed and uncrossed involuntarily.
