Chapter 1: A Reckless Proposition
The rhythmic clatter of the keyboard was the only sound anchoring you to reality. Around you, the graduate student lounge buzzed with the low hum of conversations, the crinkle of chip bags, the hiss of the ancient espresso machine. But you were cocooned in the world of your dissertation, the glowing screen of your laptop a portal to 18th-century France. Almost as a defense mechanism. You should be excited about Liam’s engagement party, but the thought of celebrating his happiness made your stomach churn. Liam, your Liam, well, former Liam.
You rubbed your eyes, the image of Marie Antoinette’s powdered wig blurring in your vision. You and Liam had broken up six months ago, a mutual decision, or so you told yourself. But seeing him move on, so publicly, so decisively, felt like a personal affront, a neon sign pointing out your own romantic failures. The engagement party was this Saturday. You had RSVP’d yes, of course. To decline would be an admission of defeat, a waving of the white flag in the face of your own insecurities.
Across the room, Maya waved, her bright smile cutting through your gloom. You offered a weak smile in return, resisting the urge to sink further into your chair. Maya, ever perceptive, navigated through the maze of mismatched furniture and plopped down beside you.
"Rough day?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.
You sighed, pushing your laptop slightly away. "Just… Liam’s party. I don’t know if I can face it."
Maya frowned. "You don’t have to go, you know. No one’s forcing you."
"Yes, they are," you said, maybe a little too sharply. "My pride is forcing me. I can’t let him think I’m still hung up on him." Even if you were. Even if the thought of him with someone else sent a shiver of something uncomfortably close to jealousy down your spine.
Maya considered you for a moment, her eyes thoughtful. "Okay, new plan. Operation: Distract Yourself. We’re going out tonight. Dancing. Drinks. No Liam-related thoughts allowed."
You managed a genuine smile. "I appreciate the thought, but I really need to get this chapter done."
"Excuses, excuses," Maya said, playfully swatting your arm. "A night out is exactly what you need. Besides," she leaned in conspiratorially, "I heard Dimitri Volkov might be at The Owl tonight."
Dimitri Volkov. The name sent a unexpected jolt through you. Dimitri was a doctoral candidate in the Physics department. You'd seen him around campus, a tall, brooding figure with eyes the color of a stormy sea. He was notoriously aloof, rumored to be brilliant but socially awkward. And undeniably attractive.
"Dimitri Volkov?" you repeated, trying to sound nonchalant. "Why would I care if he’s at The Owl?"
Maya raised an eyebrow, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "No reason, of course. Just thought you might appreciate the… scenery."
You rolled your eyes, but a tiny seed of curiosity had been planted. A night out might be a welcome distraction, and the possibility of seeing Dimitri Volkov… well, that was an added bonus. But the engagement party still loomed. You needed a strategy, a way to navigate the evening without succumbing to the swirling vortex of your own insecurities. An idea began to form, reckless and audacious, but potentially brilliant.
"Okay, I’m in for tonight," you said to Maya. "But I have a proposition for Saturday, and it is going to sound crazy."
Maya grinned. "I’m all ears."
You hesitated, taking a deep breath. "I need a date for Liam’s engagement party."
