Ambitious paralegal Aurora James arrives in New Salem determined to prove herself during a prestigious company exchange. Her placement at Vail & Rourke brings her under the scrutiny of Lucian Vail, an austere senior partner with old-world charm, and Damon Rourke, his disarming, quick-witted counterpart. As Aurora navigates demanding casework, subtle office power plays, and the charged attention of both men, unsettling details begin to undermine their carefully cultivated professionalism. In a metropolis where humans and vampires supposedly work as equals, discovering what her supervisors conceal could jeopardize Aurora's career—and draw her into a dangerous attraction governed by more than fine print.

Chapter 1: No Reflection in the Glass

The New Salem skyline was a jagged, imposing beast. Aurora James stared up at the towering buildings from the taxi window, a knot forming in her stomach. Skyscrapers of obsidian glass and steel mingled with older structures, their gothic spires clawing at the perpetually overcast sky. It was nothing like the sunny, predictable cityscape of her hometown. Even the air felt different here, thick with a metallic tang she couldn't quite place. Nerves fluttered in her chest. This exchange program was supposed to be a chance, a way to prove she was more than just a mid-level paralegal shuffling papers. But stepping outside her comfort zone felt like stepping into another world.

She double-checked the address on her phone: Vail & Rourke, Attorneys at Law. The name itself sounded like something out of a Victorian novel. The taxi pulled up to a building that looked less like an office and more like a fortress. Gargoyles perched on the roof, their stone eyes seeming to follow her as she paid the driver and climbed out. Taking a deep breath, Aurora smoothed down her skirt and walked towards the imposing entrance. The revolving doors whispered as she stepped inside, depositing her into a lobby of polished marble and hushed reverence. A sleek reception desk stretched across the far wall, manned by a woman whose expression could freeze molten steel.

"I'm Aurora James," she announced, trying to project an air of confidence she definitely didn't feel. "I'm here for the exchange program."

The receptionist's eyes flicked over Aurora, lingering on her sensible shoes and slightly rumpled blazer. "Ms. James," she said, her voice as smooth and cold as the marble around them. "Mr. Vail and Mr. Rourke are expecting you. Take the elevator to the 30th floor." She gestured towards a bank of elevators that hummed with quiet power. Aurora murmured her thanks and hurried towards them, relieved to escape the receptionist's scrutiny. The elevator was silent, the walls lined with mirrors that made her feel like she was trapped in an infinite loop of her own anxieties. She tried to smooth the wrinkles from her skirt again, wishing she'd chosen a different outfit. Something less… ordinary.

The doors opened onto a reception area that was even more intimidating than the lobby. Here, the aesthetic shifted from corporate to opulent. Plush velvet seating, dark wood paneling, and original artwork lined the walls. Another receptionist, this one slightly warmer but no less imposing, greeted her with a practiced smile. "Ms. James? Mr. Vail and Mr. Rourke will see you now." She led Aurora down a long hallway, the only sound the soft click of their heels on the polished floor. At the end of the hallway, she stopped before a set of double doors made of dark, heavy wood. "Please, go in." She offered another, slightly brittle smile. Aurora took another deep breath and pushed open the doors. The office was bathed in sunlight, the floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of New Salem. It was breathtaking. A large desk dominated the room, two men standing behind it. They turned as she entered, their eyes assessing. "Ms. James," the taller of the two said, his voice a low, smooth baritone. "Welcome to Vail & Rourke. I am Lucian Vail, and this is my partner, Damon Rourke."
