Chapter 1: Introduction

Stacy walked down her perfectly trimmed lawn, clipping an occasional wayward shrub as she made her way across the green expanse. She hadn't seen a soul pass through the neighborhood, let alone stand outside and chat for what seemed like hours. With Jamie away on business, she felt an uneasy stillness in the air.

She spotted a tall, lanky figure making its way toward her from the newly erected property line that marked her and Carlos's frontier. The sun glinted on his dark hair as it swayed with the rhythm of his gait.

Carlos had a stocky, muscular build, and his arms were covered in tattoos that poked out from underneath his shirt sleeves. Stacy could hear the faint rumble of motorcycles in the distance as Carlos neared her yard, and a shiver of unease prickled at the back of her neck.

As he approached, Carlos let out a loud, booming laugh that seemed to reverberate throughout the quiet neighborhood. He extended a beefy hand toward Stacy, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

"Is it true what they say about the neighbors?" he asked, a knowing smile playing at the corners of his mouth. Stacy hesitated, unsure of how to respond. She had heard the rumors, of course, but chose not to believe them. With a forced smile, she shook his hand and muttered a polite greeting. Her gaze flicked over to the rowdy group of bikers that had gathered near the motorcycles parked in her driveway."Your husband didn't leave you any welcoming notes, did he?" Carlos asked, eyebrows arched high.

Stacy's cheeks flushed as she watched the bikers swaggering around her driveway, their rough voices and laughter grating against the peaceful atmosphere of the quiet neighborhood.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Stacy replied curtly, attempting to hide the discomfort that had snaked its way into her voice. She knew all too well what Carlos was implying - her husband, the uptight workaholic, was known to send terse letters to neighbors who dared to overstep the boundaries of what was considered socially acceptable. “And I would appreciate if you and your friends didn’t block the end of my driveway” she finished , trying to maintain an ounce of civility.

Carlos chuckled and gave her a seductive wink, causing a shiver of revulsion to run down her spine. The bikers around him roared with laughter, and Stacy could feel her blood pressure rising.

“Oh, come on, Stacy,” Carlos said, leaning in closer to her, his body invading her personal space. “You know you want it.” He gave her a suggestive look that she could only hope was a poor attempt to intimidate her. “Even the Bible says to love thy neighbor” Carlos teased the pure wife, throwing scripture in her face.

“I do love my neighbors, just not the ones who block my driveway and disturb the peace with their loud engines and rowdy laughter” she retorted, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Well, maybe if you came outside and joined in, you'd see what all the fuss is about”, he leered, running a hand over his buzz cut.

Stacy could feel her heart racing as her temper flared. She refused to be intimidated by this obnoxious man, no matter how many tattooed motorcyclists stood behind him.

"I don't think that would be appropriate, Carlos," Stacy said firmly, pulling herself up to her full height. "I am a married woman."

Carlos only laughed at her response, his eyes roving hungrily over her slender frame. Stacy fought the urge to shudder as she felt a wave of disgust wash over her. She had never been so thankful for Jamie's absence.

Determined to put an end to the situation, Stacy sighed heavily and said, "Carlos, I think it's time for you and your friends to leave.”

“suit your self, just come on over if you ever want a real man to show you a good time” Carlos finished before returning to his yard and loud biker friends.

Stacy's heart raced as she watched him saunter back across the property line, her body trembling with anger. The audacity of the man to speak to her like that, in her own yard, was beyond belief. But what could she do? Confronting him would only escalate the situation, and Jamie was miles away, completely oblivious to the harassment his wife was facing. She glanced at the clock, realizing it was time for dinner. She took a deep breath, pushing down the resentment that had taken root in her chest, and made her way back into the house.

The last thing she wanted to do was cook, but settling for a frozen dinner didn't sit right with her either. Jamie expected a home-cooked meal when he returned home, and Stacy refused to disappoint him. She picked up her phone, dialing a local takeout restaurant as a last resort, but it went straight to voicemail.

Defeated, she tossed her phone back on the counter and began rummaging through the fridge, searching for ingredients to make something even remotely edible.

It was in that moment that the smell of smoke wafted through the open windows.

"Ah, perfect." She muttered under her breath. Carlos had obviously decided to have a cookout on his end of the property line, the alluring aroma of barbecue and alcohol now filling her backyard.

Stacy knew she couldn't let this continue. Already feeling trapped in her home, she was determined not to let the new neighbors invade any more of her privacy. She clasped her hands together, deep in thought. What could she do to prove that this was her home too? It was a good thing her kids were at their grand parents, she would hate for them to witness this. She guessed she would go over and confront Carlos and his gang.

The thought of it made her heart race, but she knew she couldn't let them intimidate her. She took a deep breath and opened the back door, making her way to Carlos's yard.

The music was blaring and the smell of alcohol was heavy in the air. She spotted Carlos near the grill, surrounded by his biker friends, grinning ear to ear. The moment she appeared, the whole group turned to look at her, and a silence fell upon them. She walked up to Carlos, her hands shaking slightly.
