Chapter 3: The Mark of Belonging
The fire had burned low by the time Kaelen finally rose from the fur rug, his joints popping from hours of stillness. Rowan had fallen asleep against his chest, exhausted beyond measure, his breathing soft and even. The hall had emptied gradually, wolves drifting off to their dens and duties, leaving only the dying embers and the lingering scent of stew and woodsmoke.
Kaelen looked down at the omega cradled in his arms, at the way the firelight caught the copper in his hair, at the faint bruise still darkening his cheekbone. Something primal and possessive curled in his gut, urging him to carry Rowan somewhere safe, somewhere private, somewhere no one could ever touch him again.
He stood carefully, cradling Rowan against his chest, and the omega stirred, blinking awake.
"Where—" Rowan's voice was hoarse, still rough from screaming.
"Shh." Kaelen adjusted his grip, feeling the warmth of Rowan's body through the blanket. "I'm taking you somewhere you can rest properly."
Rowan's eyes widened as he looked around, taking in the darkened hall, the dying fire, the empty space where the pack had gathered. "I don't... I don't want to be alone."
"You won't be." Kaelen started walking, his boots echoing on the wooden floor. "You'll be with me."
Rowan's breath caught. He didn't speak, but his fingers curled into the fabric of Kaelen's shirt, holding on like a lifeline.
The corridors of the Great Hall were dim, lit only by the occasional wall torch that cast dancing shadows across the stone. Kaelen walked with purpose, his feet knowing every step, every turn. He passed the kitchens, where the scent of bread still hung in the air, and the library, with its shelves of ancient texts and crumbling maps.
Finally, he stopped before a heavy oak door carved with a crescent moon and a wolf's head.
"My chambers," Kaelen said, shifting Rowan's weight so he could push the door open. "You'll be safe here."
He carried Rowan inside and kicked the door shut behind them.
The room was bathed in silver light from the narrow windows, the moon casting pale patterns across the floor. Furs covered every surface—the bed, the chairs, the floor—and the walls were lined with maps and tapestries depicting hunts and battles and lands far away. The scent of pine and amber filled the air, mingling with something else, something deeper and darker.
Kaelen crossed to the bed, a massive wooden frame piled high with furs and blankets, and laid Rowan down with a gentleness that belied his size. The omega sank into the softness, his eyes wide and uncertain.
"I should... I should probably clean up," Rowan murmured, gesturing weakly at his torn, bloodstained clothing. "I don't want to get your bed dirty."
Kaelen's jaw tightened. "Fuck the bed. You're not dirty."
Rowan blinked, startled by the harshness of Kaelen's words. But there was no anger in his eyes, only a raw, aching vulnerability.
Kaelen knelt beside the bed, bringing himself level with Rowan's face. He reached out, tracing the line of Rowan's jaw with his fingertips, feeling the faint tremor that ran through the omega at his touch.
"I want to take care of you," Kaelen said, his voice low and rough. "I want to show you what it's like to be cherished."
Rowan's breath hitched. "Kaelen..."
"I know you're scared." Kaelen's thumb brushed over Rowan's lower lip, feeling its softness, its warmth. "I know you've been hurt. I know you've been taught to expect cruelty." His voice dropped to a whisper. "But I'm not them."
Rowan's eyes glistened. "How do I know that? How do I know you're not just... waiting for something?"
Kaelen held his gaze. "Because I'm going to touch you now. And if you want me to stop, all you have to do is say the word. Any word. And I'll never touch you again."
Rowan stared at him, his lips parted, his chest rising and falling with shallow breaths. Then, slowly, he nodded.
Kaelen's hands moved to the hem of Rowan's shirt, the fabric torn and stained with dirt and blood. He lifted it gently, carefully, exposing pale skin and the fresh bruises that marked his ribs. Kaelen's breath caught at the sight of them, at the vivid purples and blacks that marred the smooth expanse of Rowan's torso.
"Gods," Kaelen breathed, his fingers hovering over the bruises without touching. "Who did this to you?"
Rowan looked away. "It doesn't matter."
"It matters to me."
Rowan's throat worked, a visible swallow. "The alpha. Varek." His voice was barely a whisper. "He wanted me to... to submit. Fully. I refused."
Kaelen's hands curled into fists, his knuckles white. A growl rumbled in his chest, low and dangerous. "He'll never touch you again."
Rowan's eyes met his, wide and shining. "You can't promise that."
"I can." Kaelen leaned closer, his forehead nearly touching Rowan's. "I'm the alpha here. And I'm telling you, I will burn that pack to the ground before I let anyone hurt you again."
Rowan let out a shaking breath, and tears spilled down his cheeks. Kaelen caught them with his thumb, wiping them away gently.
"Don't cry," he murmured. "I've got you."
Rowan's hand came up to cover Kaelen's, holding it against his cheek. "I don't... I don't know how to do this. I don't know how to be... wanted."
Kaelen's heart ached. "You don't have to know. You just have to let me show you."
He leaned in and pressed his lips to Rowan's forehead, soft and sweet. Then his cheek, tasting the salt of tears. Then the corner of his mouth, feeling Rowan's sharp intake of breath.
Rowan's hands came up to grip Kaelen's shoulders, tentative, trembling.
"Tell me what you want," Kaelen whispered against his skin. "Tell me what you need."
Rowan's voice was shaky. "I want you to touch me. I want to feel something other than pain."
Kaelen's eyes darkened. "I can do that."
He pulled the shirt away completely, discarding it on the floor, revealing Rowan's lithe form beneath. His skin was pale, scattered with freckles across his shoulders and chest, and the bruises stood out like ugly stains. But Kaelen didn't flinch. He leaned down, pressing his lips to the hollow of Rowan's throat, feeling his pulse flutter like a trapped bird.
Rowan gasped, his back arching slightly.
"Beautiful," Kaelen murmured against his skin. "You're so fucking beautiful."
He worked his way down, tracing each bruise with his tongue, kissing each scar like it was sacred ground. Rowan shuddered beneath him, his hands moving to tangle in Kaelen's hair, gripping tight.
"I've never... I've never been kissed before. Like this."
Kaelen lifted his head, meeting Rowan's eyes. "Never?"
Rowan shook his head, his cheeks flushing. "In Crimson Fang, omegas are... they're not meant to be kissed. They're meant to be used."
Rage burned through Kaelen's chest, hot and white. But he banked it, forcing himself to focus on Rowan, on the trembling omega beneath him.
"Well, fuck that." Kaelen leaned down and kissed him, slow and deep, his tongue sweeping into Rowan's mouth like he was claiming him for the first time.
Rowan let out a muffled sound, something between a gasp and a moan, and his hands tightened in Kaelen's hair. He kissed back with an inexperience that broke Kaelen's heart, a clumsy desperation that spoke of a lifetime of denied affection.
Kaelen pulled back just enough to speak. "You're going to learn what it feels like to be worshipped."
He worked Rowan's clothing off with patient hands, revealing skin that was smooth and warm, muscles that were lean but undeveloped. Rowan's cock was half-hard, twitching against his thigh, and he flushed crimson when Kaelen's gaze lingered.
"Don't be ashamed," Kaelen said, his voice rough. "You're perfect. Every part of you."
Rowan's breath came in short, sharp gasps as Kaelen lowered his head, pressing a kiss to the inside of his thigh. Then higher. Then higher.
"Wait." Rowan's hand pressed against Kaelen's shoulder, his voice thin. "I've never..."
"I know." Kaelen looked up at him, his amber eyes blazing. "And I'm going to make sure your first time is something you'll remember for the rest of your life."
Rowan's hand trembled against Kaelen's shoulder, but he didn't pull away. He let his fingers card through Kaelen's hair, let his head fall back against the pillows.
Kaelen took Rowan's cock into his mouth, slow and deliberate.
Rowan gasped, his hips bucking involuntarily. "Oh—fuck—"
Kaelen worked him with a practiced rhythm, his tongue tracing the length, his mouth hot and wet and perfect. Rowan's hands tightened in his hair, his breath coming in broken moans.
"I'm—I'm going to—" Rowan's voice cracked.
Kaelen pulled off just long enough to growl, "Come for me. I want to taste you."
Rowan came with a strangled cry, his body arching off the bed, his release spilling into Kaelen's mouth. Kaelen swallowed it all, licking him clean, his eyes never leaving Rowan's face.
Rowan collapsed onto the pillows, panting, his eyes wide and dazed.
"That was..." He struggled to find words. "I've never felt anything like that."
Kaelen crawled up his body, positioning himself between Rowan's legs. "There's more."
Rowan's eyes went wide with something between fear and anticipation. "Kaelen, I don't know if I can—"
"You can." Kaelen kissed him, letting Rowan taste himself on his tongue. "I'm going to be gentle. I'm going to be careful. And if it hurts, you tell me, and I'll stop."
Rowan nodded, his breath hitching.
Kaelen reached for a jar of oil on the nightstand—something Lena had left years ago, always ready, always waiting—and poured a generous amount into his palm. He slicked his fingers, then brought them to Rowan's entrance, circling the tight furl of muscle.
Rowan tensed, his eyes squeezing shut.
"Breathe," Kaelen murmured. "Let me in."
Rowan forced himself to relax, and Kaelen pressed a finger inside, slow and deliberate. Rowan gasped, his hands gripping the furs beneath him.
"Shh." Kaelen pressed a kiss to his temple. "You're doing so well."
He worked him open with patient fingers, adding another, then another, stretching him carefully. Rowan's breath came in ragged gasps, and his body writhed against the intrusion.
"Please," Rowan begged, his voice breaking. "Please, I need—"
"I know what you need." Kaelen withdrew his fingers and positioned himself, his cock slick with oil and thick with desire. "Look at me, Rowan."
Rowan's eyes opened, meeting his.
Kaelen pushed inside.
Rowan cried out, his back arching, his fingers digging into Kaelen's shoulders. Kaelen stilled, giving him time to adjust, his body trembling with the effort of holding back.
"Fuck, you're tight," Kaelen breathed. "You feel incredible."
Rowan's legs wrapped around Kaelen's waist, pulling him deeper. "Move. Please."
Kaelen began to move, slow and deep, each thrust a deliberate, worshipful slide. Rowan whimpered beneath him, his head thrashing against the pillows, his body bowing with pleasure.
"More," Rowan gasped. "Faster."
Kaelen obeyed, picking up the pace, his hips slapping against Rowan's thighs. The sound of their bodies coming together echoed in the room, mingled with Rowan's moans and Kaelen's guttural growls.
"Fuck, yes," Kaelen grunted. "You're mine. Say it."
"Yours," Rowan gasped. "I'm yours."
Kaelen leaned down and sank his teeth into the junction of Rowan's neck and shoulder.
Rowan screamed—a raw, primal sound that was equal parts pain and ecstasy. The bite was a claiming mark, a binding tie that would mark him as Kaelen's for all the world to see. Blood welled up, and Kaelen lapped at it, sealing the wound with his tongue.
Rowan's body tightened around him, and Kaelen felt him coming again, hot and trembling. The sensation pushed Kaelen over the edge, and he came with a roar, burying himself deep and filling Rowan with his release.
For a long moment, they stayed like that, tangled together, panting and slick with sweat. Kaelen finally pulled out, collapsing beside Rowan and pulling him into his arms.
Rowan was trembling, his eyes wet with tears, but there was a smile on his lips. "Thank you."
Kaelen kissed his forehead. "You're welcome."
They lay there in the silence, the fire crackling softly, the moon casting silver light across their intertwined bodies. When Kaelen pressed his fingers to Rowan's pulse, feeling the steady beat beneath the claiming mark, the fear lifted.
"You're part of the pack now," Kaelen murmured. "You're part of me."
Rowan's hand curled against Kaelen's chest. "I know. I think I finally believe it."
Kaelen held him tighter. "Go to sleep. I'll keep you safe."
Rowan's eyes closed, his breathing slowing, his body relaxing into Kaelen's embrace.
Outside, the wind picked up, and in the distance, beyond the boundaries of the Silvermoon territory, Kaelen heard the faint echo of howls that did not belong to his pack.
He held Rowan closer and let his eyes drift shut, but sleep did not come. He lay awake, listening to the storm, waiting for something he felt in his bones.
The calm before a war.
