Chapter 1: Introduction
“Are you sure you locked the back door, Katy?” Greg called from the bedroom.
“Yes, yes. I'm coming,” I replied. I had started to feel his tone was increasingly snappy—just like our marriage for the past few months, to be honest.
I pulled my cardigan over my shoulders and turned off the living room light. Our two-story suburban home had always been just fine, perfectly functional, but it suddenly occurred to me that I’d never feel at home here.
Don't get me wrong. I loved Greg.
He was my rock, my confidant, and my partner in life. We had shared countless memories and built a life together that many couples only dream of. But somewhere along the way, something shifted, and the familiarity that once felt comforting suddenly felt suffocating.
As I made my way to the kitchen, I could feel the cool night air seep through the gap under the door, a welcome relief from our stuffy home. I looked out the window and saw Jamal working diligently in his garden.
Jamal, the neighbor.
Our age difference was apparent, but he was still a head-turner. His tall, athletic build was well-maintained, and his chiseled features resembled that of a sculpture. His laughter often floated in on the breeze, stirring in me a longing I couldn't quite understand.
The door creaked under my grip as I opened it, but Jamal barely looked up, greeting me with a warm smile that set my insides alight. It wasn't the first time I'd caught myself watching him outside our window.
Jamal had a certain charm that drew people in. He was a man of the earth, never afraid to get his hands dirty as he planted and nurtured his garden. There was something so incredibly sensual about it, but I had to snap myself out of it.
"Good evening, Mrs. Katy," Jamal said as he finally looked up from his gardening, revealing his warm, dark eyes.
"Hi, Jamal. Just making sure the door's locked." I feigned innocence, hoping my cheeks weren't as flushed as I felt.
Jamal nodded, then gestured to the tools lying on the grass. "I'm just finishing up here. It's so relaxing to work in the garden after a long day, don't you think?"
I eyed the trowel in his hand, thinking of the ways its edge could trace a body instead of earth. I shook my head and tried to concentrate on the conversation. "Yeah, I wish we had the time to create a garden like yours.
Greg just doesn't enjoy it like you do," I admitted, trying to keep my voice casual.
Jamal raised an eyebrow, seemingly intrigued. "I didn't know that about him." The tone in his voice was sympathetic, and I couldn't help but feel a spark of guilt for my growing attraction to him.
I shifted uncomfortably on my feet. "Anyway, I should probably get back inside now. Monday's hustle awaits."
"It was a pleasure speaking with you, Katy," Jamal said, extending his arm to me.
I hesitated for a moment but took his hand, feeling his warm grip send a jolt down my spine. As I pulled away and looked up at him, our eyes met, and there was no denying the spark between us.
With a final nod, I went back inside and locked the door behind me, leaning against it for a moment to steady my racing heart. What just happened? I wondered, trying to make sense of the whirlwind of emotions I’d experienced in the last few minutes.
That night, I tossed and turned for hours, sleep evading me.
My mind kept replaying the encounter with Jamal, that inescapable spark between us. I finally succumbed to my restless thoughts and found myself naked, lying in bed. The breeze from the ceiling fan brushed my bare skin, and I couldn't shake the sensation of Jamal's hand in mine.
I reached over to the nightstand and ran my fingers over the cool surface of my phone. I was long past the time when I could ignore the allure—no, the undeniable pull—that Jamal had on me.
As I drifted into restless sleep, I found my mind drifting back to him, wondering what it would feel like to have his warm touch on my skin again.
It wasn't until days later that I confronted my desire head-on. After all, I was still married to Greg, and I owed it to him to be honest about my feelings.
A tense dinner flickered between us, filled with forced laughter and polite conversation as I tried to find the right words to disclose my affair with Jamal.
"Greg, I need to tell you something," I said finally. His forkful of mashed potatoes lingered halfway between his plate and mouth.
Greg put down his utensils slowly, setting his gaze on me. I could barely maintain eye contact.
"I've been seeing someone else." The truth spilled forth, almost like a reflex. The room grew still as the words hung in the air, neither of us moving or speaking for a minute.
He frowned. "What are you talking about?"
"I can't pretend anymore.
I've become infatuated with someone. I'm sorry." I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing a torrent of emotions I knew he would inevitably feel. The air between us seemed to crackle with tension and unspoken words.
Greg lowered his gaze before his eyes found mine again, filled with hurt and confusion, tears slowly trickling down his cheeks as he grappled with the news.
I felt my heart squeeze, watching as the man I had pledged my life to was torn apart by my confession.
"Katy, how could you?" Greg whispered, his voice shaking with disbelief. "How long has this been going on?"
I inhaled sharply, feeling the weight of my actions settle over us. "It's been about a month. I meant to tell you before, but I was scared of how you would take it."
"Scared? You should be ashamed.
I can't believe you, Katy." Greg's tormented voice brought me back to the reality of my confession and the turmoil I had just created. I shifted in my seat as a feeling of guilt washed over me.
"I know it's not something easy to accept, and I am sorry," I repeated softly. "But I don't want to lie about it anymore."
"Who is it?" he asked, stiffening in his chair.
"Please, Greg, I can't say his name right now." I lowered my eyes, my heart sinking in despair. "It just happened, and I never wanted to hurt you. I hope you can understand that."
Greg stared at me in utter disbelief, and with a sharp shake of his head, he stood up, knocking his chair backward to the floor with a loud thud. "Understand? How can I possibly understand? I thought we had something special, Katy.
I thought that we were a team, and that we'd make it work no matter what life threw at us." His voice cracked as he fought back emotions.
Squeezing my eyes shut, I whispered, "We did, Greg. We do. But please, just try to understand... I can't deny what I feel for him anymore. It's too powerful."
Regret clawed at me as I acknowledged the truth that hung between us. I couldn't undo my actions. I couldn't erase the pain radiating from Greg's presence.
