Chapter 2: Point of No Return

The silence after my whisper hung thick and brittle. Lavender and salt still clung to the air under the bathroom door, but the sobs had stopped. Just that terrible, listening quiet. My cheek pressed against the cool wood felt like begging. "Lucy..." Nothing.

Then, soft. Too soft. The whisper cut through the stale air like a razor drawn across silk. "Does she?"

I flinched. Didn't turn. Maria's voice, dripping with that familiar poison, slithered from behind me. Close. Too close. The cloying stench of her perfume intensified, smothering the lavender.

"And I could do a lot of things with these two." A deliberate rustle. A wet, obscene smack. Lips on fabric. On her own nipple. The image burned behind my eyes, unwanted, violating. "Does she?"

Something detonated. Not thought. Instinct. A year of Maria's cutting remarks, her smug superiority, the way she shrunk Lucy down to nothing, culminating in that forced touch, that lewd display, and now this? Mocking Lucy's pain inches from where she wept?

I whirled. Fury, white-hot and blinding, consumed every other feeling – guilt, fear, the desperate need to fix things with Lucy. It narrowed the world to Maria’s smirking face, her deliberately lifted breast, the stolen black top stretched obscenely tight.

"You want to play games?" The words scraped out, low and guttural, unrecognizable even to me. I closed the gap in one savage stride. My hands shot out, not to push, not to restrain. To hurt. To violate back. Fingers dug into the yielding softness above the straining neckline of Lucy's top, grabbing handfuls of flesh with brutal force, shoving her backwards.

Maria gasped, a shocked oof of air expelled. Her eyes, wide with sudden, genuine terror, locked on mine. The smirk vanished, replaced by raw panic. Her back slammed against the hallway wall hard enough to rattle the cheap framed print hanging beside her – a faded beach scene that suddenly felt grotesquely out of place.

The fear in her eyes was like fuel. My thumbs pressed hard, finding the stiff peaks of her nipples beneath the thin cotton, grinding against them. It wasn't desire. It was punishment. A perverse mirror of her own actions. Her mouth opened, a silent scream forming.

"Let's play," I hissed, my face inches from hers. I could smell the strawberry gloss, see the dilation of her pupils, feel the frantic hammering of her heart beneath my punishing grip. My fingers tightened, twisting slightly, eliciting a sharp, pained whimper. "You like forcing people to touch you? Huh? Like showing off how much you've got? How's it feel when it's not your choice?"

She tried to shove me back, her hands flailing against my chest, nails scraping. Weak. Ineffective. Tears welled, smearing her mascara. "Stop! Get off!" Her whisper was high-pitched, strangled.

Behind me, the silence from the bathroom was absolute. Deafening. In the red haze of rage, I’d forgotten. Forgotten Lucy was just feet away, listening. Forgotten everything but the need to break Maria, to make her feel a fraction of the humiliation she'd inflicted.

The realization hit like ice water. My hands froze, still clamped on her, the heat of her skin suddenly nauseating against my palms. Maria saw the shift. Saw my eyes flicker towards the bathroom door. A sliver of her old defiance sparked through the fear.

"Scared she'll hear?" she breathed, a vicious, trembling whisper. "Scared she'll know her boyfriend likes grabbing his girlfriend's sister? Likes it rough?" Her hips jerked forward against my grip, a crude simulation. "Feels good, doesn't it? Really fill your hands?"

Revulsion surged, churning my stomach. I ripped my hands away as if scalded, stumbling back. My knuckles stung where her nails had scratched. Maria sagged against the wall, gasping, clutching her chest where angry red marks were already blooming above the neckline of the stolen top. Her eyes, though, held a flicker of twisted triumph. She’d gotten under my skin. Again. She’d made me become something ugly.

The air crackled. Shame, thick and suffocating, flooded me, warring with the residual fury. My gaze snapped back to the bathroom door. Solid. Silent. What had Lucy heard? The slam? The gasp? My growled words? Maria's taunt about liking it rough?

A small, choked sound escaped Maria. Not a sob. More like a ragged inhale. She pushed off the wall, swaying slightly, her face pale beneath the smeared makeup. The terror was back, mixed with raw humiliation. She fumbled at the hem of the stolen crop top, her fingers trembling violently.

"Get it off," I commanded, my voice flat, dead. "Now. Leave it."

She didn't argue. Didn't sneer. With jerky, frantic movements, she peeled the black fabric up and over her head, revealing a plain black bra underneath, the straps digging into her shoulders. The top, crumpled and damp with her sweat, fell from her shaking hands onto the hallway floor. She stood there for a second, exposed in a way that had nothing to do with skin, her arms crossed protectively over her stomach, shoulders hunched. She wouldn't look at me. Wouldn't look at the bathroom door. Just stared at the discarded top on the floor like it was evidence of a crime.

"Out," I said. The word felt like gravel.

She flinched. Then, without a sound, she turned and walked unsteadily down the hallway towards the stairs, barefoot now, her discarded heels lying forgotten near Lucy’s bedroom door. The fading click of her steps on the stairs was the only sound besides the frantic drumming in my ears.

I stood frozen in the aftermath. The hallway felt smaller, charged with violence and violation. My hands hung at my sides, tingling, feeling alien. I looked at the crumpled black fabric on the floor. Lucy’s top. Defiled. Then at the scratches on my knuckles. Evidence of the monster Maria had provoked.

And the door. The silent, accusing door.

The urge to run was overwhelming. To flee the mess, the shame, the terrifying unknown of what Lucy had heard, what she knew. But running was what Maria would expect. What she’d use.

I took a ragged breath that shuddered through my whole body. The fury was gone, leaving a hollowed-out exhaustion and a crushing weight of dread. I wiped my scratched knuckles hard against my jeans, a futile attempt to erase the feel of her, the memory of my own brutality.

Then, slowly, I turned back to the bathroom door. My sanctuary of cool wood and unanswered questions. I sank down to the floor again, my back against it, the carpet rough. My head thudded back against the solid surface.

"Lucy," I whispered, the name scraping raw. No more excuses. No more desperate pleas. Just her name. An anchor. A confession. An impossible hope tossed into the suffocating silence on the other side. The silence that held everything I’d just destroyed, and everything I was terrified to face.
