Chapter 1: Introduction
The Olympus Palace loomed over Percy Jackson like a cold, unfeeling titan. He stood before the imposing structure, his heart pounding in his chest. The white marble columns glistened in the weak afternoon sun, as did the golden tapestries that adorned the walls. Yet, there was a palpable sense of dread that seemed to seep from every stone.
Annabeth Chase stood beside him, her long blonde hair swaying gently in the breeze as she watched Percy step through the enormous bronze doors.
Her heart echoed his own fear, but there was an air of determination in her gray-blue eyes.
As they entered the palace, the air seemed to thicken, heavy with the weight of power. Percy scanned the opulent rooms, his gaze lingering on the intricate mosaics that told tales of ancient Greek mythology. Yet, even amidst the beauty, he could feel the tension in the air, the palpable sense of danger.
They made their way through the palace, the sound of their footsteps echoing off the marble floors. Percy tried to ignore the unease building in his stomach, focusing instead on finding Annabeth.
Finally, they collided in a dimly lit chamber, a mere glimpse into the heart of the Olympus Palace. It was here that they were met by Zeus, the king of the gods. He stood before them, his golden attire shimmering in the dim light.
His eyes burned with a fierce intensity, and Percy could feel the power radiating from him.
"Percy Jackson," Zeus began, his voice echoing off the walls, "your disrespect for the gods has gone far enough."
Percy swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his chest. He had known this moment would come, but hearing the words spoken aloud made them all the more real.
Zeus continued, "The gods have come to a consensus. Your actions have brought dishonor upon our realm, and it is time for you to pay the price."
Annabeth's eyes widened, and she took a step closer to Percy, her hand reaching out to take his. He gripped her hand tightly, feeling a surge of love and determination welling up within him.
Zeus smiled, a cruel, mocking smile.
"To show that you truly want to apologize for your disrespect, the gods require you to show sincerity. You will prove your devotion to the gods by participating in a ceremony of sacrifice."
Percy's heart sank as he realized the gravity of the situation. He had never been one to shy away from a challenge, but this was different. The gods were demanding a sacrifice of a different kind.
"What do you want me to do?" Percy asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"You will prove your devotion by watching as the gods take what they desire from your companion," Zeus replied, a cruel glint in his eye.
Percy's heart raced as he turned to Annabeth, her gray-blue eyes wide with fear. He could feel her trembling, her hand still gripping his tightly.
"No," Percy said, his voice firm.
"I won't watch that. I won't sit here while the gods fuck my girlfriend."
Zeus's eyes narrowed, and he took a step closer to Percy. "Your other choice in this matter, Percy Jackson, will be a punishment to your beloved family will bear. Specifically, your mother, Sally Jackson."
Percy's grip on Annabeth's hand tightened, and he looked into her eyes. "I can't do this," he said, his voice shaking.
Annabeth bit her lip, a tear trickling down her cheek.
Percy put his free hand on her face, brushing the tear away with his thumb.
"I won't let them hurt you," he murmured, his eyes searching hers beggingly.
"I can't let them put your mom through that," Annabeth replied, her voice raw with emotion.
Zeus chuckled, and the sound made Percy's blood boil. He had had enough of this cruel game.
"Let your disrespect for the gods be known," Zeus said, his eyes narrowing as he stared down at Percy.
"Choose! Whether it be your family to suffer the consequences, or, will you allow your companion to take your place?"
Before Percy could even open his mouth to protest, Annabeth stepped forward, her eyes meeting Zeus's with a fierce determination.
"I'll be the sacrifice," she said, her voice steady and strong.
Percy's heart caught in his throat, and he could feel his eyes widen in shock. "Annabeth, no!" he exclaimed, reaching out to grab her arm.
But it was too late. Annabeth had already made her decision, and she stepped forward, her head held high.
"Very well," Zeus said, a cruel smile spreading across his face. "Then let the ceremony begin."
And with that, the room was filled with a deafening roar as the gods descended upon Annabeth.
