Chapter 3: The Shower's Aftermath
The cabin appeared as a dark lump in the blinding white, a stooped shoulder of weathered wood against the eternal snow. Smoke, thin and grey, whispered from a stone chimney pipe. It was the only sign of life in the vast, frozen stillness.
“Home sweet shithole,” Alex muttered, more to himself than to her. The walk had been three hours of loaded silence and stolen glances, the memory of her bare words in the gully hanging between them like a third presence. He pushed the rough-hewn door open, a gust of warmer, stagnant air meeting them.
Alyna shouldered past him, taking in the single room with a rogue’s swift assessment. The place was small, ordered in a desperate way. A cold stone hearth took up one wall, a threadbare rug before it. A narrow bed was pushed into a corner, blankets neatly folded. A crude table held a tin plate, a cup, a oil lantern, and the promised small tin of coffee. Shelves held hunting traps, neatly coiled rope, a few books with cracked spines. It smelled of pine sap, damp wool, and old ashes.
“Cozy,” she said, her tone unreadable. She unclasped her travel-worn cloak, hanging it on a peg by the door where the melting snow from its hem began a slow drip onto the plank floor.
“It’s dry. Mostly.” He busied himself, embarrassment a hot itch under his skin. This was his life, laid bare. It seemed pathetic compared to her lethal elegance. He went to the hearth, kneeling to coax the banked embers back to life with kindling and a practiced breath. The fire caught, licking hungrily at the dry wood, and light began to pulse through the room, chasing shadows into the corners.
He heard the rustle of her removing her leathers. The soft thump of boots. He kept his eyes on the flames, his back to her.
“You have a wash basin?” Her voice was closer.
“By the back door. Pump’s outside. Water’s… brisk.”
He heard her snort. “Brisk I can handle.”
He listened to the sounds of her moving—the creak of the pump handle outside, the slosh of water in the metal basin, the soft wet sound of a cloth. The fire popped, sending a shower of sparks up the chimney. The intimacy of it, her cleaning the journey from her skin in his space, was more overwhelming than the cave. That had been crisis. This was choice.
He finally risked a glance over his shoulder.
She stood by the basin, her back to him, bathed in the weak afternoon light from the high, frost-rimed window. Her skin was the color of honey in the gloom, muscles moving with fluid grace under its surface as she washed her neck, her shoulders. The blonde ponytail was damp at the ends, darkening to gold. Water traced the knobs of her spine, the dramatic taper of her waist, the powerful swell of her—
He looked away, his throat tight. He focused on getting a pot of water from the barrel, setting it to heat on an iron hook over the fire for the coffee. The ritual was a anchor.
The washing sounds stopped. He felt her stillness.
“You’re staring at the fire like it owes you money, pup.”
He turned.
She was facing him now, naked, unashamed, a damp cloth dangling from her fingers. Water droplets clung to her tanned skin, catching the firelight like scattered jewels. She was a statue carved from something warmer than marble, all sleek lines and breathtaking, impossible truth. The shower had washed away the grime of the storm, the cave, the yeti. What remained was just her.
He couldn’t speak. His mind emptied of everything except the sight of her. The awe he’d felt in the cave returned, but cleaner now, without the panic of freezing to death. This was just beauty, stark and formidable and entirely hers.
He saw her chest rise and fall. Saw the faint tension in her jaw. Her bravado was there, in the tilt of her chin, but her green eyes were watching him, waiting for the flinch, the laugh, the look of disgust.
It never came.
He took a step forward. Then another. The worn floorboards creaked under his boots. The only sounds were the crackling fire and the ragged draw of his own breath.
He stopped an arm’s length away. His eyes traveled over her, not as a collection of shocking parts, but as a whole. The elegant arch of her feet. The lean muscle of her calves and thighs. The dark blonde thatch of hair at the junction of her legs, from which her shaft, heavy and full in repose, curved against her lower belly. The flat plane of her stomach, the gentle swell of her breasts, the column of her throat, the sharp, beautiful points of her ears silhouetted against the grey window light.
“You’re incredible,” he whispered, the words tasting like a revelation.
A shudder went through her. The cloth fell from her fingers with a wet slap on the floor.
He reached out, his hand trembling only slightly. He didn’t go for the obvious, the central fact of her. His fingers went instead to a droplet of water tracing a path down her sternum. He touched it, following its track with the pad of his thumb, smearing it into her skin. Her flesh was warm, alive, pebbling under his touch.
Her breath hitched. Her eyes fluttered closed for a second, then opened, watching his hand as if it were a fascinating, foreign creature.
He moved his palm, flattening it against her ribs, feeling the strong, steady drum of her heart beneath. He splayed his fingers, learning the texture of her, the smoothness, the faint silvery lines of old, faded scars. His touch was slow, reverent. An exploration.
Her own hand came up, covering his. Not to push it away. To hold it there. Her fingers were long, calloused, strong. They laced with his for a moment, then guided his hand downward, over the tense flex of her abdomen.
She was showing him. Again. But this wasn't the desperate, shared warmth of the cave. This was deliberate. An offering.
His fingertips brushed the coarse hair, then slid lower, coming to rest at the very base of her shaft where it met her body. The skin was impossibly soft there. He curled his fingers, not gripping, just cradling the immense, heat-radiating weight of her.
“Here,” she breathed, her voice a low vibration. Her other hand came down, covering his completely, showing him the pressure she liked. A firm, confident touch. Not tentative. Not worshipful, but knowing. Her hand moved his, a slow, steady stroke from root to tip, and he felt her thicken and swell further under their combined grip. A pearly bead welled at the tip, slicking his thumb.
A raw, hungry sound escaped him. He turned his face up to hers. Her eyes were dark, pupils swallowing the green. The fear was gone, burned away by a heat that mirrored the fire at his back.
He leaned in. She met him halfway.
The kiss in the cave had been a spark. This was a conflagration.
Her lips were soft, demanding. She tasted of cold water and something faintly wild. Her tongue swept into his mouth, and he met it with his own, a clumsy, eager mimicry. His free hand came up, tangling in her damp hair, his fingers brushing the sensitive pointed tip of her ear.
She flinched, a full-body shiver, and a moan was swallowed by the kiss. Her hips pushed forward, driving her flesh more firmly into their still-moving hands.
The world narrowed to the points of contact: mouth on mouth, hand on heated skin, the shared rhythm of their breath, the scent of pine tar soap and wood smoke and her. The precarious trust of the gully, of the long walk, blossomed into this—a raw, unspoken need that bypassed thought entirely.
He broke the kiss, gasping, his forehead resting against hers. “Alyna…”
“Stop talking,” she murmured, and then her mouth was on his neck, his jaw, trailing hot, open-mouthed kisses that left his knees weak. Her hands were everywhere—pulling at the laces of his tunic, pushing the rough fabric from his shoulders. He helped, frantic, until his own chest was bare to the firelight.
She pushed him back, not towards the bed, but towards the rug before the hearth. He went willingly, sinking down onto the coarse wool. She followed him down, straddling his hips, her weight settling on him in a way that made his head spin. She was everywhere above him, a golden goddess haloed by firelight, her expression fierce with desire.
She looked down at his face, at his own obvious, straining arousal trapped between them by his trousers. A slow, wicked smile spread across her lips. The cheeky humor was back, but softened by something warmer.
“So,” she said, her voice husky. “You’ve never.”
It wasn’t a question. He shook his head, unable to form words.
She leaned down, her breath warm against his ear. “Good. No bad habits to unlearn.” She nipped his earlobe, then soothed it with her tongue. “Just do what feels good. And tell me if it doesn’t.”
Then her mouth was on his chest, her hands working at the fastenings of his trousers. He arched up, helping her, and then he was as bare as she was. The cool air was a shock, followed immediately by the overwhelming heat of her body settling back over him.
Skin to skin. The full, shocking reality of her, solid and warm and alive. Her shaft, thick and insistent, pressed against his stomach. His own length was trapped between their bodies, nudging against her. The sensation was dizzying.
She kissed him again, deep and consuming, rocking her hips slowly, creating a friction that was maddening, imperfect, and utterly perfect. He thrust upward, meeting her, his hands gripping her hips, sliding up to span the narrow of her waist.
It was a clumsy, feverish dance. There was no technique, only feeling. The rasp of calloused hands on smooth skin. The slap of flesh. The choked-off gasps and muffled curses. The fire painted their moving shadows on the wall in a frantic, silent pantomime.
He felt the coil tightening again, the same unbearable pressure from the cave, but deeper, richer. He was flying apart. “Alyna, I’m… I can’t…”
“Look at me,” she commanded, her voice strained.
He forced his eyes open. Her face was above his, flushed, her lips parted, strands of blonde hair sticking to her damp temples. Her green eyes held his, letting him see the vulnerability there, the unraveling pleasure, the shared precipice.
“Come on, pup,” she whispered, her rhythm becoming erratic, desperate. “With me.”
It was the permission, the partnership in it, that broke him. Pleasure tore through him, white-hot and obliterating. He cried out, his body bowing off the rug as he spilled between their pressing bodies, the pulses wracking him.
Through the haze, he felt her climax follow. Her body locked, a guttural cry tearing from her throat. Her release was a hot flood against his stomach, her inner muscles clenching around nothing in powerful, rhythmic waves. She collapsed onto him, her full weight a comforting anchor, her face buried in the hollow of his neck.
Silence, save for the crackling fire and their ragged, syncopated breathing.
The sweat on their skin began to cool. He didn’t move, his arms coming up to wrap around her, holding her to him. She didn’t pull away. Her breath was warm and steady against his skin. One of her hands came up, her fingers tracing idle, wondering patterns on his chest.
After a long time, she shifted, lifting her head. She looked down at the mess between them, then at his face. A slow, exhausted, real smile touched her lips.
“So,” she said, her voice raspy. “How was the terrible coffee?”
A laugh burst out of him, surprised and rusty. It felt good. “We didn’t even make it.”
“Priorities,” she said, and sighed, settling her head back on his chest. “The water in the pot’s probably boiled away.”
“Probably.”
They lay there as the fire burned down to glowing coals, the cabin darkening around them. The cold began to seep in from the edges of the room, but beneath them, on the rug, they were an island of shared warmth.
Eventually, wordlessly, they got up. They used the now-cold water from the wash basin and the discarded cloth to clean each other off with a practicality that felt more intimate than anything that had come before. They didn’t speak. They just touched, gentle now, helping.
He pulled the blankets from the narrow bed and brought them to the rug by the hearth’s residual warmth. They lay down together, her back to his front, his arm around her waist, her head pillowed on his arm. Her body fit against his like a key in a lock he hadn’t known was empty.
Outside, the endless Winterspring night deepened, stars piercing the black sky like frozen pinpricks. The wind picked up again, moaning around the eaves of the cabin.
But inside, for the first time in a long time, neither of them was alone with the cold.
Just before sleep took him, her voice, soft and slurred with exhaustion, reached him in the dark. “Alex?”
“Hmm?”
“Your coffee better not actually be terrible.”
He smiled into her hair. “It’s the worst.”
“Good.”
And then there was only the sound of her breathing, deep and even, and the slow, steady beat of her heart under his hand.
The fire had guttered to a nest of pulsating coals, painting their skin in deep amber and long, dancing shadows. The cold was a patient intruder, finally seeping past the warmth of the rug and the shared blankets. Alex felt it first on his back, a creeping insistence.
He also felt the exact moment Alyna woke. It wasn't a startle, but a gradual tightening of the muscles under his arm. Her breathing changed, losing the slow, deep rhythm of sleep. Her fingers, which had been resting lightly on his wrist, curled slightly.
He waited. The silence stretched, taut and meaningful, filled with the memory of her body moving over his.
“You’re thinking too loud,” she murmured, her voice rough with sleep. She didn’t turn.
“Can’t help it.” He nuzzled the back of her head, breathing in the scent of pine soap and her. “My brain’s… catching up.”
She shifted then, turning in his arms with a rustle of blanket. The dim, warm light hollowed her cheeks and made her green eyes look bottomless. She studied his face, her expression unreadable. The usual cheeky glint was absent, sanded away by a profound seriousness that made his stomach clutch.
Her hand came up, her fingers tracing the line of his eyebrow, then his jaw. The touch was deliberate, almost solemn.
“Alex.” His name was a statement, not a question. She took a slow breath, her gaze dropping to where her fingers rested on his chin, then lifting again to spear him. “This between us is precious. I don’t want to lose it.”
He started to speak, to offer some reassurance, but she pressed a finger to his lips. Her eyes were wide, vulnerable in a way he’d only glimpsed before.
“I am a freelancer. I have no boss and I’m not affiliated with the blood elf military.” She said it like she was laying down a card, a crucial piece of information that changed the game. “I don’t know how, but I’d like to make this work.”
Her throat worked as she swallowed. The bravado was completely gone now, stripped bare. “I believe you that you find me attractive. And that you want me. But I don’t know if you want more.” She searched his face, her voice dropping to a whisper strained with raw hope. “Please be honest. What do you want? You gave me the most wonderful thing in my life. I won’t be mad at you if you don’t want more.”
The tension in the air was a physical weight. He could feel her heart thumping against his chest, a frantic counter-rhythm to his own. He saw the history of rejection in her eyes, the expectation of it, the armor she’d already begun to rebuild while waiting for his answer.
He moved his hand, cupping her cheek. Her skin was warm. He ran his thumb over the sharp point of her ear, and she shivered, her eyes closing for a fleeting second.
“I was alone in this cabin for two months before the storm,” he said, his own voice quiet. “I talked to the walls. I tracked a snow leopard for a week just for something to follow. I thought the silence would drive me insane.”
He leaned forward, resting his forehead against hers. “You asked me what I want? I want to not be alone anymore. I want this. The coffee. The silence that isn’t empty. The walking together. I want to learn you. All of you. The rogue, the woman who swears at yetis, the person who feels precious to me, too.”
He felt the shuddering breath she let out against his mouth. A single, hot tear escaped the corner of her eye, and he wiped it away with his thumb.
Her expression shifted, the vulnerability melting into something hotter, more direct. A slow, wicked smile touched her lips, real and relieved.
She waited a beat, letting his words hang in the cooling air. Then she shrugged one bare shoulder, the gesture impossibly casual. “Okay,” she said, as if they’d just settled a minor trade deal.
She slid her leg over his hip, rolling him gently onto his back and settling her weight atop him. The blankets fell away, and the cold air hit their skin, raising goosebumps. The dying firelight caught the gold in her hair and the fierce intent in her eyes.
She leaned down, her lips brushing his. “Good talk.” Her voice was a low, promising rumble. “Now, for the other thing.”
She kissed him, deep and consuming, before pulling back just enough to speak, her breath mingling with his. “Because I badly want to fuck you, by the way.”
Her words hung in the cold air, a raw and thrilling promise. There was no joke in her green eyes now, only a focused intensity that stole his breath. The vulnerability of moments before had transformed into something commanding, an electric certainty that flowed from her body into his.
He could only nod, a quick, sharp movement of his head. Speech was beyond him.
She didn’t rush. Her gaze held his as her hands moved to his hips, her touch firm and orienting. She shifted her own weight, rising up on her knees. The firelight traced the powerful lines of her thighs, the curve of her stomach, the heavy, proud shape of her now fully aroused.
He watched, heart hammering against his ribs, a mixture of awe and a sharp, new anxiety twisting in his gut. This was different. This was deliberate. The cave had been shared survival. The rug had been a clumsy, mutual exploration. This felt like a claiming.
“Look at me,” she said again, her voice low but clear, cutting through the dizzying static in his mind. “Just at me.”
He dragged his eyes from her body to her face. Her expression was open, allowing him to see the slight tremor in her lower lip, the faint sheen of sweat on her temple. She was not unaffected. She was right here with him.
She reached between them, her hand wrapping around herself, guiding the broad, slick head of her shaft to him. The contact was a shock of heat. He gasped, his hips lifting instinctively, seeking pressure, seeking her.
“Easy,” she murmured, but it was a comfort, not a reprimand. She applied a steady, insistent pressure, her eyes locked on his, watching every flicker of sensation that crossed his face.
There was a burning stretch, a profound, unfamiliar fullness that stole the air from his lungs. His fingers dug into the rough wool of the rug beneath them. A sharp, broken sound escaped him.
She froze, her entire body going rigid. “Stop?” The word was tight, urgent.
“No.” He forced the word out, shaking his head. The pain was already shifting, melting into a deep, aching sensation of being utterly filled. It was overwhelming. It was everything. “Don’t stop. Please.”
Her exhale was a gust of relief. She leaned down, bracing her hands on either side of his head, her hair falling around them like a curtain. She kissed him, slow and deep, as she began to move.
SHE MOUNTS HIM.
It was a slow, rocking roll of her hips, a careful, measured rhythm that allowed his body to adjust to hers. Each forward motion was a revelation, a press against a place inside him that sparked lights behind his eyelids. Each retreat was a loss that made him clutch at her back, pulling her down to him.
“Alright?” she breathed against his mouth, her own breath coming in short, controlled bursts.
“Yeah,” he gasped. “God, yeah.”
She took that as permission. Her pace deepened, grew more confident. The careful rocking became a firm, driving rhythm. The sounds in the cabin changed—the wet, intimate slide of their bodies, the creak of the floorboards beneath the rug, their mingled, ragged breathing punctuated by soft, punched-out gasps.
He surrendered to it. To her. His hands slid from her back to the powerful flex of her ass, gripping, urging her on. He met each thrust, learning the timing, the angle that made him see stars. The world dissolved into sensation: the smell of their sweat, the rough wool against his back, the incredible, hot friction inside him, and her face above his, fierce and beautiful, a strand of blonde hair stuck to her damp cheek.
Her control began to fray. Her rhythm faltered, grew frantic. Her moans were less muffled, raw and unfiltered. “Alex… look at me. Don’t look away.”
He couldn’t have if he tried. He was pinned by her gaze, by the overwhelming vulnerability and power warring in her expression. He felt his own climax building, a terrifying wave starting from the very core she was striking with every drive of her hips.
“I’m close,” he warned, his voice a strained whisper.
A wild smile touched her lips. “Then come.” She dropped one hand between them, her clever fingers finding his neglected length, stroking him in time with her thrusts. The dual assault was too much.
It tore through him with a violence that bordered on pain, a white-hot seizure of pleasure that locked his muscles and ripped a hoarse shout from his throat. He spasmed beneath her, his release painting streaks across both their stomachs.
The clenching of his body around her tipped her over the edge. She cried out, a sharp, elvish syllable that was pure release. Her hips stuttered, grinding deeply into him as she rode out her own climax, her inner muscles pulsing around nothing, her warmth flooding his insides.
She collapsed forward, catching her weight on her elbows at the last second, her forehead pressed to his shoulder. Her whole body trembled. His own limbs felt like water, boneless and spent.
For long minutes, there was only the sound of their labored breathing slowly calming, and the soft hiss of the last ember in the hearth finally giving up its ghost. The room was pitched into near-total darkness, the deep cold immediately beginning to seep into their damp, cooling skin.
She shifted, wincing as she pulled away from him and rolled onto her side. She didn’t go far, just enough to face him, one arm slung across his waist. In the faint gloom from the window, her eyes were dark pools.
“Okay?” she asked softly. It was the same question from the cave, but it meant everything now.
He turned his head. Every muscle ached in a new, profound way. “Yeah.” He found her hand with his, lacing their sticky fingers together. “You?”
She let out a short, breathless laugh. “I have… no adequate words. In any language.” She squeezed his hand. “We’re going to freeze if we stay here.”
They helped each other up, moving stiffly in the dark. They used the last of the now-icy water in the basin to clean up, their touches gentle, practical. They gathered the blankets and stumbled to the narrow bed, their body heat the only real warmth left in the cabin.
She curled against his back, her front to his spine, her arm a heavy, comforting weight across him. Her breath warmed the nape of his neck.
“The coffee,” he mumbled into the pillow, already half-gone. “Tomorrow.”
“It better be fucking fantastic,” she whispered, her voice slurred with exhaustion.
He fell asleep with the scent of her in his lungs and the profound, lingering ache of her inside him. The silence of the cabin was no longer empty. It was full. It was precious.
