Chapter 1: The Birthday Gift Unveiled

The key turned in the lock with a metallic scrape that sounded absurdly loud in the quiet hallway. Brandon shouldered the door open, his gym bag slumping from his shoulder to the floor with a thud. He was late. The client meeting had dragged on, and the traffic home was a special kind of hell. All he wanted was a beer, leftover pizza, and to collapse on the couch with Gabby.

“Honey, I’m home,” he called out, his voice tired. The usual response—the shuffle of her slippers, a call from the kitchen—didn’t come. Instead, the air was still, and thick with a scent that wasn’t their usual lemony cleaner.

Vanilla. And roses.

He frowned, rounding the corner from the entryway into the living room. Then he stopped. Everything just stopped.

The room was a pool of warm, breathing shadow, lit only by the trembling flames of candles scattered across every surface. Their light danced over the coffee table, the bookshelves, glinting in the facets of two empty wine glasses. Rose petals, deep crimson, were strewn across the rug like a trail of silent footsteps.

At the end of that trail, on the couch, sat his wife.

Gabby was wearing a short slip of emerald green silk, the kind of thing he’d bought her for their anniversary and rarely seen since. The candlelight traced the generous curve of her hip, the dip of her waist. The fabric was so thin he could see the dark shadow of her nipples, a detail that sent a jolt straight to his gut. Her long blonde hair was down, messy in a way that was deliberate. She smiled, not her usual sunny grin, but something slower, more knowing.

And she wasn’t alone.

Beside her, curled into the corner of the sofa, was Megan. Gabby’s friend from college, who’d recently moved back to the city. Megan, who had a laugh that could cut through a crowded bar. She was in midnight blue, a similar silken nothing that clung to her own soft, ample curves. Her shoulder-length blonde hair was tousled, and her bright green eyes held a spark of playful nerves. She lifted her wine glass in a small, silent toast.

Brandon’s brain short-circuited. “What’s… going on?”

“Happy birthday, baby,” Gabby said, her voice a low hum that vibrated in the candlelit air.

“My birthday was Tuesday,” he managed to say, his eyes flicking between the two women, the exposed skin, the intimate darkness of the room.

“I know. This is the real gift. The one I couldn’t wrap.” Gabby uncurled herself from the couch. The silk whispered against her skin as she walked toward him, the petals crushing softly under her bare feet. She stopped close enough that he could feel her body heat. She smelled like her perfume and wine and something fundamentally, dangerously hers.

She took his hand. Her fingers were warm. “Come with me.”

He let her lead him, his mind a static buzz. Megan uncurled herself too, following a few paces behind, a quiet, smiling shadow. They didn’t go to the kitchen. They passed it, moving down the short hall to their bedroom.

The door was ajar. Inside, more candles. Their bed, the comforter turned down. The sense of a stage being set was overwhelming.

Gabby turned to face him in the center of the room. Megan lingered in the doorway, leaning against the frame, watching.

“Gabby,” Brandon started, a hundred questions jumbling together. Was this a test? A joke? His heart was hammering against his ribs.

She placed a finger over his lips. Her expression was utterly serious, her eyes soft. “Listen to me. I love you. More than anything. This isn’t a trick. I’ve been planning this for months.” She glanced back at Megan, who gave a slight, reassuring nod. “We’ve talked. A lot. This is a gift. For you. For us. A fantasy. I want to give it to you.”

She stepped back, her hand slipping from his face to his chest, giving him a gentle push toward the bed. Then she looked at Megan. “My only rule,” Gabby said, and now her voice took on a teasing, commanding edge he rarely heard, “is that you have to make her moan first.”

The world tilted. Brandon looked at Megan, who was no longer smiling nervously, but looking at him with an open, curious hunger. He looked back at his wife, who was watching him with pure, wicked affection.

“You’re serious,” he breathed.

“Dead serious.” Gabby walked over to Megan, brushed a strand of hair from her friend’s cheek. It was a tender, intimate gesture. She whispered something in Megan’s ear that made her blush and bite her lip. Then Gabby turned, walked to the large armchair in the corner of their room, and sat down. She curled her legs under her, looking completely at home. “I have the best seat in the house. Don’t mind me.”

The silence that followed was profound, filled only by the faint hiss of candle wax and the thunder of his own pulse. This was real. His wife, whom he had loved since he was twenty-two, was sitting across the room. And Megan, beautiful, laughing Megan, was standing by his bed, waiting for him.

He moved slowly, as if in a dream. He stood before Megan. Up close, he could see the faint freckles across her nose, the rapid flutter of a pulse in her throat.

“Hi,” she said, her voice a little husky.

“Hi.” He didn’t know what to do with his hands. “Is this… are you…”

“I’m exactly where I want to be,” she interrupted, her confidence returning. She reached out, took his hand, and placed it on the silk covering her hip. The heat of her skin bled through instantly. “Gabby talks about you all the time. How good you are. How much you love her.” She leaned in, her breath warm against his ear. “I want to see what that’s like.”

It was the permission, the context, that broke the last of his paralysis. This wasn’t a betrayal. It was an offering, crafted by the woman he trusted most in the world. He let his hand slide from Megan’s hip around to the small of her back, pulling her gently against him. She came willingly, her body soft and yielding.

He kissed her. It was different from kissing Gabby—softer at first, exploratory. Her mouth tasted like red wine and mint. She made a small sound against his lips, a sigh, and melted into him.

Behind them, from the chair, he heard Gabby let out a soft, contented sigh of her own.

He guided Megan backward until her knees hit the bed. She broke the kiss, her green eyes searching his for a second, then she sat, pulling him down with her. He followed, bracing himself above her. The silk of her gown was slippery under his hands. He found the strap, slid it down her shoulder, following the path with his mouth. Her skin was impossibly smooth. He kissed the curve of her shoulder, the hollow of her throat.

A shaky breath escaped her. He glanced over at Gabby. She was watching, her chin resting on her hand, a small, private smile playing on her lips. There was no jealousy in her face. Only intense, focused fascination.

Brandon turned his attention back to Megan. He lowered his head, his lips finding the taut peak of her breast through the thin blue silk. He circled it with his tongue, the fabric dampening, becoming almost transparent.

Megan gasped. Her hand came up, her fingers tangling in his short brown hair, not pushing him away, but holding him there.

“Yeah,” she whispered. “Just like that.”

He obliged, his own desire now a sharp, clear signal, cutting through the initial fog of shock. He used his teeth, gently, and her back arched off the bed, pushing herself more firmly into his mouth.

A low, shuddering moan broke from her throat. It was raw, unfiltered, and utterly real.

It echoed in the quiet room. Brandon froze for a second, the sound acting like a trigger. He looked immediately at his wife.

Gabby’s smile had widened. She uncurled from the chair and stood up. The green silk whispered as she walked to the side of the bed. She looked down at them, at Megan’s flushed face, at Brandon’s position above her.

“See?” Gabby said, her voice thick with affection and pride. “I knew you could.” She then kicked off her own slippers and climbed onto the bed, kneeling beside them. She ran a hand through Brandon’s hair, her touch familiar and grounding. “My turn.”
