Chapter 1: The Universe Breaks
The rain tapped a steady, impatient rhythm against the windowpane, a gray backdrop to the warm, vanilla-scented clutter of Tessa’s apartment. A discarded sweater lay over the arm of the couch. Two empty mugs sat on the coffee table, forgotten. The air felt thick, charged with something that had been building for over a year.
Tessa shifted on Nate’s lap, her knees sinking into the cushions on either side of his hips. This was their usual pose, safe and contained. His hands rested lightly on her waist, a familiar and frustrating barrier. She could feel the hard line of his erection through his jeans, a promise he never let either of them cash.
“Nate,” she murmured, her voice a little hoarse. She brushed a strand of jet-black hair from his forehead. His green eyes watched her, patient, always so damn patient.
“Hmm?”
She leaned in, her lips grazing his ear. Her heart hammered against her ribs. For a year, she’d been the good girlfriend, the understanding one, smothering the wild, hungry thing that paced inside her. It was starving.
“I had a dream last night,” she whispered. His fingers tensed slightly on her waist. “You were in our bed, but it wasn’t just you. There were hands everywhere. Shadows with mouths. You were watching me, telling me what a good girl I was for taking them all.” She felt him suck in a sharp breath. “And later, when it was just us, you held me down and you… you didn’t pull out. You never pull out in my dreams.”
A low groan vibrated in his chest. His grip on her hips tightened, real and bruising for the first time. The careful restraint he wore like a second skin began to fray at the edges.
“Tessa,” he warned, but it sounded like a plea.
“I’m so tired of being good, Nate,” she breathed, nipping his earlobe. “I want you to ruin me. I want you to fuck me so full I can’t walk. I want you to share me. I want everything, every filthy, perfect thing I’ve ever pictured when I’m alone in the dark. I want it with you.”
That was the trigger. The final switch.
His head snapped up, his eyes locking onto hers. They weren’t calm anymore. They were molten, predatory. A primal sound ripped from his throat, and he crushed his mouth to hers. It wasn’t a kiss. It was a claiming. His tongue plunged deep, stealing her breath, her thoughts, the last vestige of the civilized world.
And then the air crackled.
A static pop, like a blown speaker. The lamplight flickered, throwing jagged shadows. Tessa felt a surge of heat, a pressure building not just in the room, but in the weave of reality itself. It centered on the point where their bodies met.
Beneath her, Nate went rigid. A shudder wracked his frame, violent and profound. She broke the kiss, panting, and looked down.
His jeans strained. The denim creaked, then the sound of a button pinging off and hitting the floorboards. The thick outline she’d felt for a year was… changing. Swelling. Pushing against the fabric with an impossible, relentless pressure until the zpper gave way with a metallic tear.
It wasn’t just hard. It was a obscene, veined thickness that defied anatomy, rising hot and heavy against her inner thigh. The sheer scale of it should have been horrifying. It sent a bolt of pure, unadulterated lust straight to her core. She was drenched, instantly.
Nate’s head fell back against the couch, a cord standing out in his neck. His hands scrabbled at her leggings, yanking them and her underwear down in one frantic motion. The fabric caught at her knees, a hopeless tangle.
“Now,” he growled, the word guttural and raw. It wasn’t a request. It was a law of physics.
She lifted herself, not needing guidance. The broad, slick head of him pressed against her, a stretch that burned in the best way. She sank down slowly, her eyes rolling back as she took him, inch by impossible inch. A year of chastity evaporated in the sensation of being filled beyond reason, beyond dream. She felt split open, owned, perfected.
He bottomed out inside her with a choked gasp from them both. For a second, there was only the sound of rain and their ragged breathing. The world had narrowed to this connection, hot and achingly deep.
Then he moved.
His hands clamped on her ass, lifting her and slamming her back down. The pace was savage, immediate, a relentless piston driving her into oblivion. The polite, considerate lover was gone. In his place was something feral, something born of her own whispered corruptions.
“Is this,” he gritted out, driving up into her, “what you wanted?” His voice was dark honey and gravel. “This cock? Filling up that pretty little fantasy?”
“Yes,” she sobbed, nails digging into his shoulders. Each thrust hit a place that made her see white. “More. More.”
He twisted, rolling her onto her back on the couch, never slipping out. He loomed over her, his green eyes blazing. The new, monstrous part of him throbbed inside her, a constant, stretching reminder. He hooked one of her legs over his shoulder, deepening the angle impossibly.
“You wanted to be shared?” he snarled, his hips a punishing rhythm. “You will be. I’ll invite the whole goddamn city in. I’ll watch them use you until you forget your own name. And then I’ll take you back and breed you so deep the first one won’t have washed out of you.”
The filthy words, the vision they painted, tipped her over the edge. Her orgasm ripped through her, violent and convulsing, clamping around him in wave after wave of blinding pleasure. She screamed into the rainy afternoon.
He didn’t stop. He didn’t even slow. His endurance was as impossible as his size. He rode her through the tremors, watching her shatter with a possessiveness that bordered on madness. When her cries subsided to whimpers, he leaned down, capturing her mouth again.
“Mine,” he breathed against her lips. “My good girl. My dirty, perfect dream.” His thrusts became deeper, slower, more intentional. She felt him swell even further, a hot, impending promise. “Gonna put a baby in you right now. Gonna see your belly round with me.”
The declaration, so stark and primal, coiled another orgasm tight in her belly. She was babbling, yes, please, Nate, yes.
With a final, ground-shaking drive, he buried himself to the hilt and came. She felt it, a hot, endless flood that had no business being real, pumping into her with a force that seemed to last for minutes. It tipped her over again, a softer, fuller fall that left her boneless and gasping.
He collapsed on top of her, his weight a solid anchor. The only sounds were the rain and the wet, ragged pull of their breath. The smell of sex and ozone hung in the air.
Slowly, he pushed himself up on his elbows. He looked down at where they were still joined, at the mess between her thighs, then back at her face. A slow, wicked smile touched his lips—a smile she’d never seen before. It was all hunger and satisfaction.
“The rules,” Tessa whispered, awe and lust mingling in her shattered voice. “They’re different now, aren’t they?”
Nate’s smile widened. He pulled out, a slow, deliberate withdrawal that made her gasp at the sudden, empty sensitivity. He looked at the couch, at the evidence of what had just happened, and then back at her. His gaze traveled from her flushed face, down her curved body, to the window where the storm raged.
“Rules?” he said, his voice a low rumble. He stood up in a fluid motion, pulling her effortlessly into his arms. He carried her toward the bedroom, past the scattered remnants of their old life. “Sweetheart, we just broke the universe. There are no rules.”
He shouldered the bedroom door open. The bed was a tangled nest from the night before. He laid her in the center of it, his body already covering hers again, already hard and ready. The rain sheeted down the window, blurring the world outside into irrelevance.
“Now,” he said, his mouth hovering over hers. “Tell me another one of those dreams.”
