Chapter 1: The Dare That Cracked Her Code
The fluorescent lights buzzed like angry hornets overhead. Quinn hunched over her keyboard, fingers flying, the only sound the frantic clatter of keys against the server room’s constant, low whir. Stale coffee and ozone hung thick in the chilled air.
"Deep dive into Professor Vance’s spaghetti code again, Abernathy? Or just avoiding sunlight?" Jace Stratton’s voice cut through the hum, impossibly close. His expensive cologne – woodsy, sharp – flooded her senses, overwhelming the stale air. He leaned over her shoulder, his breath suddenly hot on her ear. His arm brushed hers as he pointed at her screen. "What’s this little project? Doesn’t look like homework."
Quinn flinched, fingers freezing mid-keystroke. Her shoulder blade pressed hard against the back of her oversized hoodie. "None of your business, Stratton." She kept her eyes glued to the lines of Python. "Go find someone else to annoy."
"Aw, c’mon, Quinnie." He chuckled, the sound low and vibrating near her temple. He tapped the screen right on the glowing pink icon she’d been debugging. "Facial recognition? Emotion mapping? This looks… fun. What’s it do? Make you look less like you slept in a server rack?" He nudged her playfully, his hip bumping her chair.
She jerked away. "It’s a filter app. A smart one. Adaptive. For my AI seminar. Now go away." Her voice was tight.
"Filter app?" Jace’s tone shifted, intrigued, predatory. He slid into the empty chair beside her, swiveling it to face her fully. He didn’t touch her this time, but his presence was a physical pressure. "Show me."
"No."
"Bet it’s glitchy. Bet that’s why you’re hiding in this crypt." He grinned, all perfect white teeth. "Bet you won’t even test it yourself, genius. Too scared it’ll show the truth?"
Quinn’s jaw clenched. She hated his goading. Hated how easily he got under her skin. Her eyes flickered to the icon. It pulsed faintly, rhythmically, like a tiny, insistent heart. "It’s not ready," she muttered, pulling her hood further over her tangled dark hair.
"It’s code. Test it." He leaned in again, his gaze locked onto hers. His eyes were startlingly blue, framed by annoyingly perfect lashes. "Put me in. See what your magic box does to this face." He gestured at himself, smirking.
"Not happening." She turned back to her screen, trying to ignore the warmth radiating off him. Trying to ignore the way the pink light seemed to throb brighter. Trying to ignore the stupid, traitorous flutter in her stomach his proximity always caused. She focused on a stubborn loop error. Forget him.
A long beat of silence, filled only by the server hum and her own too-loud heartbeat. Then Jace spoke, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial murmur, smooth as silk. "Funny thing about code, Quinn. Sometimes… it doesn’t do what you tell it to do." He paused, letting the implication hang. "Sometimes… someone else gives it… alternative instructions."
Slowly, Quinn turned her head. His expression was a mixture of amusement and something darker. Triumph. "What did you do?" The words came out flat, cold.
His grin widened. "Just added a little… spice. Custom parameters. Tailor-made for you, Abernathy." He nodded towards her screen. "Go on. Hit ‘run’. See what my vision looks like."
Her hand hovered over the mouse. Anger warred with a terrifying curiosity. He’d hacked it? What had he done? The pink icon pulsed, pulsed, pulsed. It felt like it was pulsing inside her skull now. "You’re a dick, Jace," she breathed, but her finger moved, clicking the icon almost against her will. The camera feed flickered on, showing her own reflection – messy hair, dark circles under wide, anxious eyes, the too-big hoodie swallowing her frame.
Then the filter engaged.
Static crackled across the screen, a harsh digital buzz that seemed to echo in her teeth. Her reflection dissolved in a shimmer of pixels.
Replaced.
Porn-star platinum blonde curls exploded onto the screen, perfectly coiled and impossibly shiny, replacing her dark, messy waves. Her skin smoothed to an airbrushed, poreless mannequin texture. Thick, black spider-leg lashes sprouted, framing eyes suddenly outlined in harsh, glittering black liner. Lips ballooned, filled to bursting, smeared with a violently pink, wet-look gloss that seemed to drip. Layers of heavy, contoured makeup caked her face – sharp, unnatural cheekbones, a nose suddenly narrow and pinched. It wasn't enhancement. It was caricature. Grotesque.
Quinn gasped, recoiling from the monitor like it had bitten her. "Jesus! What is that? Turn it off! That's hideous!" Revulsion twisted her stomach. She fumbled for the mouse.
"Relax," Jace purred, his hand closing firmly over hers on the mouse, stopping her. His touch sent an unexpected jolt up her arm. "It’s just the visual. Takes a second to sync." His eyes were fixed on the screen, fascinated. "Look closer."
She tried to pull her hand away, but his grip tightened. Not painfully, but unyielding. She looked back at the monstrous reflection. The eyes… they still held a flicker of her own panic underneath the thick layers of digital sludge. As she stared, a strange sensation prickled across her scalp. A phantom tugging, like a thousand tiny hands rearranging her roots. A low buzz started inside her head, not the servers this time, but deeper, resonating.
"No," she whispered, the word barely audible.
"Feeling it yet?" Jace murmured, leaning so close his lips brushed her ear again. "The algorithm… it doesn’t just change the image, Quinn. It suggests. It… influences. Makes you crave the transformation. Crave the attention it brings." His breath was hot. "Especially… my attention."
The buzzing intensified, morphing into a distinct, insistent whisper inside her mind. It wasn't words, but… desires. A sudden, sharp longing for smoothness, for shine, for that impossible blonde brightness. An itch beneath her skin where the heavy digital contouring lay. Her reflection’s enlarged lips seemed to pout, begging for gloss. The layered makeup suddenly looked… powerful. Commanding.
Quinn shook her head violently, trying to dislodge the invasive thoughts. "Stop it. Shut it off, Jace. Now." Her voice trembled. She felt a bizarre pressure on her lips, making them feel thin, inadequate. She touched them. Dry. Chapped. Wrong.
"Why?" Jace asked, his voice soft, hypnotic. His thumb rubbed a small circle on the back of her trapped hand. "Don’t you want to see what happens next? Don’t you want to feel… desired? By everyone?" His gaze swept over her, lingering. "Starting with me."
The whisper in her mind surged. Blonde. Smooth. Full. Powerful. The phantom tugging on her scalp became a demanding pull. Her own dark hair felt suddenly heavy, dull, suffocating. She imagined it lighter… brighter… perfect. The image on the screen wasn't hideous anymore. It was… aspirational. A goal. His vision of her. His ideal. The heavy makeup looked glamorous, sophisticated. The pouty lips… kissable.
Her free hand rose, trembling, towards her own hair. The urge to tear out the dark strands and replace them with that impossible blonde was terrifyingly strong. Her gaze flickered from the screen to Jace’s face, drawn to his perfect jawline, his confident smirk. A wave of heat washed over her, intense and confusing. Not just anger. Not just fear. Something else. Something warm and needy that pooled low in her stomach. Directed straight at him.
"I…" Her voice sounded strange. Thicker. Slower. She swallowed, her throat clicking. The revulsion was still there, a trapped scream at the back of her skull, but it was muffled, drowned out by the rising tide of alien cravings. The buzzing whisper filled her head completely now. Look. Like. Her. Want. Him.
Her reflection on the screen tilted its head, the heavily lined eyes blinking slowly, deliberately. The grotesquely plump lips curved into a slow, deliberate smile. A smile Quinn didn’t consciously make. Her own lips twitched, trying to mimic it, feeling stiff and unnatural.
Jace watched her, his blue eyes gleaming with fascination and something else… satisfaction. "There she is," he breathed. "Much better."
Quinn’s trapped hand under his went limp. Her gaze locked onto his, wide and strangely vacant beneath the imagined layers of makeup. The scream inside her head was a distant echo. The craving for transformation, for his approval, roared louder. Her free hand, the one that had been reaching for her hair, drifted down. Not towards the mouse to turn it off. But sideways. Towards Jace. Her fingers stretched out, trembling, aiming for the sharp line of his jaw. The buzzing filled her ears, drowning out the servers, drowning out reason. One clear, terrifying thought sliced through the static, feeling both utterly alien and horrifyingly natural: Need to touch him.
