Chapter 1: Introduction
I remember it was the third week of July when I'd been handed that golden goose egg in my office at London's MI6 headquarters. "Name: Auric Goldfinger. Nationality: Unknown. Occupation: Criminal mastermind." My superior, M, had said, raising his bushy white eyebrows in a way to make the seriousness of the whole business even more apparent.
"Bond, you'll be checking into the Hotel de Paris, Monte Carlo. Need you know, Goldfinger might be lurking somewhere close by. You have to keep your eyes open and ears to the ground. Here's your cover: you're an English expatriate named John Harrison."
I chuckled to myself, fiddling with the Monte Carlo's Grand Hotel key card. "A classic alias, M.
I appreciate the dramatic irony," I flashed a charming smile at the senior agent. "No need to tell you, I'll be prepared for Goldfinger's web of deceptions."
Walking into the suite, 007 was greeted by the glimmers of sunlight off the multi-million dollar yachts in the marina, and the lush softness of the carpets beneath his feet. A far cry from my damp London flat, hospitality like this was no doubt a calculated move from the mysterious Goldfinger.
But I couldn't help but let my thoughts drift from the danger ahead and indulge in the luxurious ambiance. This was the life, after all, frivolously spent on materialistic pleasures.
I felt my lip curling disapprovingly, a subtlety masked by my air of arrogance. Indulgence, yes; this I could enjoy without guilt. But it wasn't long before I adjusted my cufflinks and scanned the horizon, keeping diligent vigil of the bustling marina below.
I was beckoned to the grandeur, yes, but I never let my guard down completely. I'd retired to the room's lush sofa in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, casually swirling a glass of bourbon in my hand, when a faint sound from the hallway drew my attention.
"Must be the cleaners," murmured my thoughts, before pricking up my ears. The sound of a light knock caught me off guard. I wasn't expecting any visitors, save MI6's inevitable contact.
The staff knew better than to interrupt a man in my line of work without prior arrangement, especially when in disguise as the reclusive "John Harrison."
The knocking persisted, and I sighed, placing the glass of bourbon on the nearest table and crossing the plush suite. As I reached the door, I glanced through the peephole, brow furrowed with suspicion. My instincts were immediately on high alert.
Standing in the hallway, barely visible behind an ostentatious bouquet of red roses, was the devastating silhouette of a man.
Delicately dressed in a bespoke suit, his suave appearance seemed to call my name.
I cocked an eyebrow and smirked, gently tugging the door open.
"Well, well," I drawled, "a rose for John Harrison? How utterly clichéd-yet-delightful of you, friend."
Goldfinger's voice was a purr-like whisper, each word dripping with playful cunning, "I know you're partial to a rogueish surprise, John.
Or should I say... James? I must admit, I've been dying to meet the infamous 007."
I leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, maintaining my nonchalant facade. "Ah, Auric Goldfinger, I presume? You're quite the persistent little thorn, aren't you?"
He chuckled, a sound as smooth as velvet, and extended the roses towards me. "A gift, for your time and patience. I assure you, I'm not here to cause trouble."
I took the bouquet, giving him a wry smile.
"How thoughtful," I said, stepping aside to let him enter. "Though I must warn you, Auric, I'm not one for small talk." I led him into the suite, watching his every move. He was a man who commanded attention, yet there was something else about him - an air of mystery that piqued my curiosity.
Goldfinger sauntered in, his eyes scanning the opulent room with a casual indifference that spoke volumes about his familiarity with such surroundings. "Neither am I, James," he replied, turning to face me. "Let's cut to the chase, shall we?
You're here because you're after something, and I'm here because I've been sent to keep an eye on you. So, what's this about, Auric?" I asked, gesturing towards the plush seating area, inviting him to take a seat.
Goldfinger smirked, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "Always the direct one, aren't you, Bond? Very well, let's dispense with the pleasantries." He settled onto the sofa, crossing his legs elegantly. "I have a business proposition for you."
I raised an eyebrow, taking a seat across from him. "A business proposition?
