Chapter 6: Midnight Confession

The muffled thump of a door closing down the hall jolted Chad awake. He hadn’t meant to sleep. He’d been staring at the ceiling, the film room’s criticisms echoing alongside the memory of Kyle’s whispered warmer. His body ached from a brutal practice made worse by his own distraction. A punishment lap for dropping passes.

The soft click of his own lock turning made him freeze.

He hadn’t bolted it. A stupid oversight.

The door opened, letting in a sliver of garish hallway light before it was shut silently, plunging the room back into the messy, lamp-lit gloom. And there she was.

Kyle stood just inside the door, backlit for a moment by the flickering laptop screen on Chad’s desk. She wore a dark silk robe, belted tight at her narrow waist, the material shimmering as she moved. Her hair was down, longer than Chad had ever seen it, damp at the ends as if she’d just showered. She looked like a phantom from a dream he’d tried to forget.

“Jesus, Kyle,” Chad breathed, pushing himself up on his elbows. “How did you—”

“Spare key. From freshman year. You never asked for it back.” Her voice was low, a neutral statement of fact. She untied the robe’s belt with a slow, deliberate pull. The silk sighed open. Underneath, she was naked.

“You can’t be here,” Chad said, but the words had no force. His eyes were traitors, tracing the curve of her hips, the swell of her chest, the shadowed line down her stomach.

“Seems like I am.” She let the robe slide from her shoulders. It pooled on the floor at her feet, a puddle of dark liquid. She crossed the room, her movements different now—not the linebacker’s prowl, but something more fluid, conscious of the new balance of her body. The childbearing hips, the roundness of her butt, they were undeniable facts in the low light.

She didn’t hesitate. She climbed onto the narrow dorm bed, her knees sinking into the mattress on either side of his hips. Her weight settled over him, warm and real and terrifying. Her bare chest pressed against his, her hard nipples scraping through his thin t-shirt. The scent of her clean skin and something floral—soap, maybe—wiped away the stale sweat of the room.

“We can’t pretend last time was just research anymore,” she whispered, her mouth inches from his. Her breath was minty.

Before he could form a denial, before he could summon the panic that screamed teammate, friend, wrong, she sealed her plush lips over his. It wasn’t gentle. It was desperate, hungry, a claiming. Her tongue pushed into his mouth, and Chad groaned, his hands coming up to grip her waist, his fingers digging into the soft flesh above her hips. He kissed her back, a week of confused wanting exploding in the hot slide of their mouths.

She broke the kiss, panting, her forehead resting against his. Her eyes were dark pools, reflecting the jagged light from the laptop. She ran her hands up under his shirt, her palms hot and sure on the planes of his stomach, his chest. Her nails dragged lightly over his skin.

“Fuck, bro,” she breathed, a laugh caught in her throat. “You’re jacked.” Her hands roamed over the hard ridges of his abs, possessive and admiring. Then one hand slid up to cup her own breast, squeezing it, offering it. She guided his head down slightly, her voice dropping to a husky whisper right against his ear. “And I know you like these titties, baby.”

The raw, crude words in her voice, that familiar voice, shattered the last of his resistance. It was a confession and a challenge all at once. He turned his face, pressing his mouth to the soft swell she presented, sucking her nipple through the cotton of his shirt. She gasped, her hips grinding down against the hardening line of his jeans.

“Off,” she demanded, tugging at his shirt.

He obeyed, breaking contact only to yank the shirt over his head. She looked at him, her gaze raking over him with an intensity that was both scientific and starving. She leaned down, kissing his neck, his collarbone, her hands everywhere.

“I watched you at practice today,” she murmured against his skin. “You kept looking. Every time you thought no one would see.”

“I couldn’t focus,” Chad admitted, his voice ragged. His hands slid down to her ass, gripping the full, incredible flesh. “Coach reamed me out.”

“Good.” She bit his shoulder, not hard, but enough to make him jolt. “You deserve it for running out like that.”

“I had to—”

“You chose to,” she corrected, sitting up to stare down at him. The lamplight caught the hurt in her eyes, quickly masked by lust. “You chose the team. Over this.”

“It’s not that simple,” he argued, but his hands were still moving on her, pulling her closer.

“Make it simple.” She reached between them, her fingers fumbling with the button of his jeans. “Right now, it’s simple. You want me. I’m here.”

He helped her, shoving his jeans and boxers down his thighs. She rose up on her knees, guiding him with a hand that was both clumsy and utterly confident. She sank down onto him in one slow, devastating motion, her head falling back, a stifled cry escaping her lips.

This time was different. No clinical curiosity, no challenge for data. This was pure, frantic need. She rode him with a determined, grinding rhythm, her hands braced on his chest. Chad gripped her hips, matching her thrusts, his eyes glued to the sight of her—her face contorted in pleasure, her body moving with a grace that defied its power.

“Tell me,” she panted, leaning over him, her hair forming a curtain around their faces. “Tell me this is just being a good bro.”

“It’s not,” he choked out, arching up into her. “It’s not.”

“Then what is it?”

He didn’t have an answer. All he had was the feeling, the breathtaking, world-ending rightness of being inside her. He pulled her down for another bruising kiss, swallowing her moans.

It was faster, messier than the first time. A storm of accumulated tension. Chad felt his control snap. His hands flew to her ass, pulling her down harder, driving deeper. Kyle’s rhythm broke into shuddering, erratic movements, her cries growing louder, less stifled.

Someone in the next room banged on the wall. “Keep it down, assholes!”

The reality of the thin dorm walls, of the entire team sleeping just doors away, crashed over them both at the same moment. Kyle’s eyes snapped open, wide with a sudden, sharp fear. She clapped a hand over her own mouth, her body still convulsing around him. The suppression of her sounds, the illicit thrill of it, pushed Chad over the edge. He came with a ragged groan he bit into his own arm, his body buckling beneath hers.

She collapsed on top of him, a sweaty, trembling weight. They lay like that, tangled and trying to catch their breath, the distant sounds of video games and shouted conversations from down the hall seeping under the door.

Her cheek was pressed to his pounding heart. “They can never know,” she whispered, repeating his own words back to him like a curse.

Chad stared at the framed photo on his wall, a shot of him and Kyle after last season’s championship, helmets in hand, arms around each other’s shoulders, grinning through the grime. The gap between that image and this felt like a chasm no one could cross.

“I know,” he said, the words hollow in the quiet room.

Kyle shifted, pulling away from him. The cool air hit the wetness between them. She got off the bed, moving with a new kind of weariness, and picked her robe up from the floor. She didn’t put it on. She just stood there, naked and devastating in the messy room, holding the silk like a forgotten flag.

“I’m not a secret, Chad,” she said, not looking at him. “I did all this… this,” she gestured at her body, “so I wouldn’t have to be a secret anymore. To myself.” She finally turned, her gaze landing on him, still sprawled on the bed. “And now I’m your secret.”

She shrugged into the robe, belting it tightly. She walked to the door, pausing with her hand on the knob.

“You gotta choose,” she said, her voice flat, final. “The bro in the picture, or the one in this bed. You can’t have us both.”

She opened the door and slipped out, leaving it slightly ajar. Chad lay paralyzed, the scent of her on his skin, the choice hanging in the air like the echo of a slammed door.

He didn’t move for a long time. The muffled sounds of the dorm—laughter, a blaring TV, someone’s shitty music—felt like they were coming from another planet. His ceiling, stained with water marks, offered no answers. Only the ache in his hips and the cool tackiness on his stomach proved it hadn’t been a dream.

Eventually, he swung his legs off the bed. The floor was cold. He walked to the door she’d left ajar and closed it softly, turning the lock with a definitive click. The empty room felt louder than before.

He showered, scrubbing at his skin until it was pink, but her smell—that mix of her floral soap and something uniquely, musky her—seemed embedded in him. He pulled on fresh boxers and stood before the framed championship photo. His own grin looked idiotic now. A lie.

“You gotta choose,” she’d said.

His phone buzzed on the desk. A text from Martinez: Where u at? Smash Bros tournament in my room. Bring beer.

Chad stared at the screen. The normalcy of it was a slap. He typed a reply. Sick. Turning in early. He placed the phone face down. He pulled on a hoodie and a pair of sweatpants, his body moving on an autopilot he didn’t recognize.

The hallway was quiet. He knew which room was hers at the end of the hall, a single she’d negotiated after the surgery. Light bled from under the door. He didn’t knock. He just turned the handle. It was unlocked.

She was sitting on the edge of her bed, still in the silk robe, her head in her hands. She looked up when he entered. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but her expression was hard, defiant. Waiting.

“Hey,” he said, the word stupid and small.

“Forget something?” Her voice was hoarse.

“Yeah.” He closed the door behind him. “I forgot to say you’re right.”

She watched him, saying nothing. The space between them crackled.

“I can’t have you both,” Chad continued, shoving his hands into his hoodie pocket. “The guy in the picture and… this. So I’m choosing.” He took a step forward. “I’m choosing the secret.”

Kyle’s defiant mask fractured. Something raw and hopeful flashed in her eyes before suspicion hardened them again. “Bullshit. You’re just saying that because you got post-nut clarity and feel guilty.”

“Maybe.” He took another step. “But I’m here, aren’t I?”

He crossed the room and knelt in front of her, the old carpet rough against his knees. He looked up at her. From this angle, she seemed monumental. He reached for the belt of her robe.

She caught his wrists, her grip iron-strong. “Why?”

“Because when you left,” he said, the truth pouring out of him like a puncture, “it felt like the room was empty. Actually empty. For the first time ever.”

Her fingers loosened their grip, slid down to lace with his. A silent permission.

He untied the belt. The robe fell open. He leaned forward, pressing his face against the smooth warmth of her stomach, inhaling her. She let out a shuddering breath, her hands coming to rest on his head, her fingers tangling in his short hair.

He looked up, meeting her gaze. Then he moved. He kissed the inside of her thigh, the sharp line of her hip bone, the soft plane of her belly. He was mapping her, this new country, with a reverence that shocked him.

When his mouth found her breast, she gasped. He took her nipple between his lips, sucking gently, then with more force as she arched into him. Her moan was a low, broken sound. One of her hands slid under his hoodie, her nails scraping up his spine.

She tugged at the fabric. “Off,” she demanded, her voice thick.

He leaned back, pulling the hoodie over his head in one quick motion. Before he could move again, her hands were on the hem of his t-shirt. With a sharp, impatient yank, she ripped it upwards, the seams popping with a sound like tearing paper.

He sucked in a breath, surprised by the violence of it. He suckled one of her tits, his mouth working hungrily as the torn cotton of his shirt hung awkwardly from his shoulders. The contrast was electric—the gentle pull of his mouth, the aggressive claim of her hands tearing his clothes.

She pushed him back onto the floor, following him down. The world narrowed to the pressure of her body on his, the taste of her skin, the ragged sound of their breathing. There were no more words. No more choices to be made in that moment.

There was only this: her weight, her heat, the terrifying freedom of choosing the fall over the ledge. The championship photo in his room was just paper and glass now. This, the sweat-slick press of skin on skin on the scratchy dorm carpet, was the only thing that felt real.
