Chapter 1: The Rhythm of Unspoken Desires

The pick clicked off the rim of Julian's bass and skittered across the polished oak floor. It spun once, twice, then settled against the leg of Darius's mixing desk. Julian crouched to grab it, and the room went still. The track still hung paused on the monitor, an unfinished bassline frozen mid-phrase. The cooling fans hummed low in the corners.

Julian's fingers found the thin triangle of plastic, but he didn't stand up right away. He looked up from his crouch and found both of them watching him. Darius stood by the console, arms folded, his henley open at the collar, the silver ring glinting as his thumb worked slow circles against his own forearm. Kofi who was wearing a short sleeve dashaki shirt, black jeans and nike slides hadn't moved from the leather chair, but his head had tilted just enough that his glasses caught the amber light from the floor lamps.

The silence drew out a second too long. Then another.

"You good down there?" Darius asked. His voice came low and easy, the same tone he used when he wanted a vocalist to lean closer to the mic.

Wearing a white polo shirt, black khakis and white air force ones, Julian rose, the pick pinched between his fingers. "Dropped it. Nothing more than that."

Darius crossed the room. The soft soles of his timberland boots made almost no sound on the wood, but Julian felt the displacement of air as he closed the distance. When Darius stopped, his hand settled on Julian's shoulder. A firm palm, the warmth of him bleeding through the thin cotton of Julian's polo shirt.

Julian smelled him up close. Cedar and something clean, the faint mineral tang of studio sweat that had been building over three hours of takes. He didn't pull away.

Behind Darius, Kofi rose from the chair. He moved without hurry, straightening the hem of his African attire, and the deliberate calm of it made every small motion feel weighted. He crossed to them and stopped at Julian's left side, close enough that his shoulder nearly brushed Julian's arm. His gaze moved from Darius's hand on Julian's shoulder to Julian's face, and he let the look sit there.

"Still got tape rolling," Kofi said. His voice was quiet and even. "Or we can call it."

Julian's throat tightened. He knew what call they meant, and the knowing sent heat up the back of his neck. "We been at this since noon."

"We have," Darius said. His thumb pressed into the meat of Julian's shoulder. "But we can take a break that doesn't look like a break."

Julian exhaled a laugh that came out rougher than he meant it to. "That so."

Kofi stepped in. His chest met Julian's arm, and Julian felt the solid weight of him through the wool of the dashaki. Kofi's hand found Julian's jaw, turned his face gently toward him. The glasses were a thin dark frame around steady eyes. Julian let himself be turned.

"Been watching you play all afternoon," Kofi said. "You got a thing you do when you lock the groove. You bite your lip. You close your eyes right at the good parts."

"You notice that?" Julian asked.

"I notice everything," Kofi said, and the flat certainty of it made Julian's cock stir against the seam of his jeans.

Darius's hand slid off Julian's shoulder and down his spine, a slow drag that settled at the small of his back. His other hand came up to the nape of Julian's neck, fingers threading into the loose hair at the base of his locs. Julian's breath hitched.

"So this is the break," Julian said. It came out barely a whisper.

"Yeah," Darius said. "This is the break."

Kofi's thumb brushed the corner of Julian's mouth. Then he leaned in and kissed him, soft at first, just the press of his lips and the warmth of his breath. Julian's mouth opened under his, and Kofi made a low sound in his throat that vibrated through Julian's chest.
