Chapter 1: Introduction
Karen took a deep breath and opened the classroom door. The warm, beeswax-scented air of the hallway hit her like a tidal wave, and she savored it. Every day she spent in this over-air-conditioned building filled her with the urge to jump out of her sensible pumps, yank off her shirt, and run through the halls—shrieking about injustice and the repressed beauty among them.
Her heels clicked down the hallway decorated with pithy inspirational quotes and frantic red-pink-and-white flyers for student events.
She paused at her classroom door, assembling her thoughts. The class was more than half over already, but she couldn't help but feel the weight of expectation and anticipation.
Karen took a moment to compose herself. She was a bundle of nerves. With her coffee in hand, she faced the classroom once more, her heart rate clattering in sync with her heels against the linoleum. Her students purred like cats beneath her gaze, like so many skinny kittens and unexpected duds.
The hum in the classroom intensified as Karen walked in and arranged herself behind the podium. Smoothing out her latex lingerie under her clothes, she mustered up a smile.
Karen felt the sweat prickle across her brow as she readied herself for another attempt at teaching, another try at penetrating the stony expressions of her students. She scanned the room, knowing that Hannah wouldn't meet her gaze. Ever since they had met, Hannah had been acting strangely—diffident, distracted, and withdrawn.
At first, Karen put it down to the unspoken struggles unique to undergraduate students, but as the weeks rolled by, she started to wonder about the root cause of Hannah's troubles.
Karen began to notice Hannah's frequent blushing when their eyes met, the way she wouldn't answer when called upon, and how she tended to drift off into a hazy daze only to snap out of it abruptly and jot something down hurriedly in her notebook.
As the term progressed, Hannah's work began to suffer. There was a growing distance between them, and it seemed to Karen that she had lost some vital connection with her student.
She sighed, watching the backs of her students' heads, the sheen of their hair under the unforgiving fluorescent glow, and caught herself wondering about the hidden facets that they all revealed only in fragments and patches.
Karen finally made the decision: she needed to talk to Hannah.
After class, Karen asked Hannah to remain behind for a moment.
Hannah's stomach leapt into her throat, and she felt her cheeks flush with heat. She knew that this was about her performance.
Hannah couldn't help but feel a pang of frustration, knowing she was being judged on her work when her mind had so frequently strayed elsewhere. Although it wasn't an entirely painful frustration—after all, her wandering mind was often preoccupied with Karen herself.
Karen watched Hannah gather her belongings, and as the classroom emptied, she took a breath, attempting to tether her swirling thoughts.
She couldn't quite discern the nature of Hannah's problems; if the girl really was struggling, then she should show some understanding—but prolonging their interactions outside of the confines of the classroom might lead to complications.
As she approached, Hannah hesitated, tense and uncertain.
"I need to talk with you, Hannah," Karen said, her voice still soft, and the girl looked up. "I want to help you as best I can."
Hannah bit her lip, nodded, and followed Karen out of the classroom, into the dimly lit corridor.
A sudden chill ran down her spine, and she realized she had never been alone with Karen. The thought made her nervous—but concurrently, it sparked a sense of thrilling curiosity.
Karen turned to face Hannah, her eyes meeting the girl's. She could see the questions bubbling in Hannah's expression, like a cove ready to burst. Before Hannah could venture her doubts, Karen spoke, breaking the silence.
"I know that we've only just met, but I can tell there's something troubling you.
And I want to try and help, Hannah," Karen said, her voice steady despite the thundering of her heart.
Hannah glanced down the dimly lit hallway and swallowed hard. Her attraction to Karen gnawed incessantly at the back of her mind, like an insatiable beast.
Karen continued, "Of course, I realize I might not always be the most approachable, but I pride myself on being fair. And I believe you deserve fairness more than most."
Hannah felt her cheeks burn.
Every instinct implored her to bolt and evade Karen's gaze—to abandon the conversation and hope that it could be forgotten. "
I think I'm just finding the coursework hard—or maybe I'm just not cut out for this," Hannah murmurs, fidgeting and casting her gaze at her own feet. "I don't know, I guess I feel like I don't belong here sometimes, and it doesn't help that you've noticed, that I'm struggling more than the others."
Karen's eyes narrow as she appraises Hannah.
The tension between them ratcheted up, drawing Hannah into its vice-like grip.
"I want to believe you," Karen replies, her gaze intense yet wistful.
Hesitation lingered in the air, wrapped in a veil of doubt.
"But I know there's more to it than just finding the coursework difficult, isn't there, Hannah?"
A long pause follows, and finally Hannah concedes, whispering, "Maybe, you're right."
She sighs deeply, eyes distant, as though searching for an escape.
Reluctantly, she continues, "No, you're not wrong, I do struggle a lot in this class but honestly, I think my issues go beyond that."
Hannah's voice falters, on the cusp of vulnerability. The air between them thickens with the weight of unspoken words.
A sudden, inexplicable desire for Karen seizes Hannah. Her heart races as she reflects on her feelings.
"Karen, I... I've never felt like this before. I didn't know I could feel attracted to a woman. And you... you're so beautiful, so smart and confident... I just can't help but feel drawn to you," Hannah confessed, biting at her lower lip.
Karen looks stunned at first, unsure how to respond. But her eyes narrow, and she can tell Hannah is telling the truth.
There is a charged silence as they both take in the gravity of the situation.
Karen looks at Hannah, still recovering from the confession she had just made. Sensing the apprehension, Karen moves closer, invading Hannah's personal space.
"I've always known there was something different about you," Karen says softly, reaching out to gently brush a strand of hair away from Hannah's face.
Hannah trembles under her touch, feeling the warmth of her teacher's hand against her skin. She looks up at Karen with a mix of fear and excitement, wondering where this moment would lead them.
Karen leans in closer, her lips hovering dangerously close to Hannah's. She can feel her heart pounding in her chest, her thoughts consumed with this beautiful, vulnerable student before her.
With gentle pressure, Karen presses her lips to Hannah's.
