Chapter 11: Hard Lessons

The bruise on her breast throbbed in time with the cursor’s blink on the screen. Selina sat in the editing bay, the ghost of Chad’s possession a phantom weight between her legs. The taste of him—whiskey and copper—still lingered. On the monitor, Brooke’s frozen gaze had been replaced by raw footage from Megan’s preliminary interview. Megan, all sharp angles and defiant eyes, was talking about control, about curated degradation. Selina lit a cigarette, the smoke curling in the blue light, and hit play.

The sound was off. She watched Megan’s mouth move, the practiced cadence of a woman selling her own dismantling. It was all so familiar it made her teeth ache.

A soft knock at the doorframe fractured her focus. Olivia stood there, huddled in a cheap silk robe the color of a faded bruise. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her freckles standing out like flecks of rust on pale canvas.

“You’re here late,” Selina said, not turning from the screen.

“I couldn’t sleep. The house… the girls are all talking. About tomorrow.” Olivia’s voice was a thin wire. “I keep thinking about what you said. About faking it.”

Selina took a drag, exhaled slowly. “And?”

“I don’t know how.” The admission was a whisper, swallowed by the hum of the computer fans. “I tried… in my room. Thinking of… I don’t know, something sexy. But all I see is Mark’s face, and that… that stuff he wants to do. And I freeze.”

Selina finally swiveled her chair. She looked at the girl—the trembling hands, the swallowed terror. She saw the raw material, and she saw the waste. A part of her, a distant, almost dead part, wanted to tell her to run. To take that clean little life and never look back. But that part had been extinguished in Charlie’s office, sealed under Chad’s bruising kiss.

“Come with me,” Selina said, stubbing out the cigarette.

She led Olivia not to a set, but to one of the dim, velvet-draped dressing rooms used for pre-shoot preparations. It was a cave of illusions. Neon strips behind fabric cast a hellish glow. The air smelled of stale perfume, sweat, and the ozone of hot styling tools. Mirrors reflected mirrors, creating infinities of weary faces.

“Sit,” Selina said, pointing to a low stool in the center of the room.

Olivia perched on it, clutching her robe closed. Selina moved behind her, their eyes meeting in the glass. “The problem isn’t Mark. It’s you. You’re trying to feel something. That’s your first mistake.”

“I’m supposed to feel something, aren’t I?” Olivia’s reflection pleaded.

“No. You’re supposed to make him feel something. To make the lens feel something. Your own feeling is irrelevant. It’s static. Noise.” Selina’s hands came to rest on Olivia’s robed shoulders. She felt the girl flinch. “You think the greats, the ones who lasted, were feeling transcendent pleasure every time some stranger emptied his balls on them? They were thinking about their mortgage. Or their kid’s tuition. Or the grocery list. The body is a machine. You learn the controls.”

“I don’t know the controls,” Olivia whispered, her gaze dropping from Selina’s in the mirror.

“Then I’ll show you.” Selina’s voice held no warmth. It was technical. Instructional. “Open your robe.”

Olivia’s hands trembled at the silk belt. She undid it slowly, letting the fabric fall open. Her body was young, slim, her breasts small with pink, tense nipples. She tried to cover herself with her arms.

“Hands on your knees,” Selina commanded. “Look at yourself. Not at me. At the product.”

Tears welled in Olivia’s eyes, but she obeyed, placing her palms on her knees, staring at her own naked reflection—a stranger posed for a clinical examination.

Selina knelt behind her, her mouth near Olivia’s ear. “Close your eyes. Don’t think about pleasure. Think about function. A hand on a crank. A pump. This is maintenance.”

She reached around, her own hands cool and deliberate. She took Olivia’s right hand and guided it between the girl’s legs. Olivia gasped at the touch, her own fingers foreign and clumsy.

“Feel that? That’s just tissue. Nerve endings. Blood flow. It’s plumbing.” Selina moved Olivia’s fingers in a slow, circular motion over her clit. Olivia’s breath hitched; her body was betraying her, responding to the sheer physical stimulus despite her fear. “See? It works. It’s designed to. Your mind is the interference.”

“It’s… it’s not working,” Olivia whimpered, but a faint flush was spreading across her chest.

“It is. You’re just listening to the wrong channel.” Selina’s voice was a relentless, low murmur. “Stop trying to be turned on by a fantasy. Be turned on by the power of faking it. By the knowledge that you can make your body do this, on cue, under lights, with a crew watching, and a man you despise waiting his turn. That’s the real thrill. The con.”

She increased the pressure, guiding Olivia’s fingers faster. Olivia’s head fell back against Selina’s shoulder, a shudder running through her.

“There’s no audience here, Olivia. No judge. Just you and the mechanics. Give in to the mechanics. Let the machine run.”

Selina’s other hand cupped Olivia’s breast, thumb rasping over the nipple. It was not a caress. It was a calibration. “This tightens. Good. That’s a visual cue. The camera will see that. They’ll think, ‘She’s so excited.’ They’ll never know you’re counting the cracks in the ceiling.”

Olivia was breathing in sharp gasps now. Her hips began a tiny, involuntary stutter against her own hand. The wet sound of her touch filled the hot, perfumed air.

“That’s it,” Selina whispered, her voice like grinding glass. “Let it be empty. Let it be a void. The orgasm is just a muscular spasm. A release of tension. It doesn’t mean a goddamn thing. It’s the paycheck. That’s all.”

She removed her guiding hand, leaving Olivia to continue alone. The girl’s movements became more frantic, less coordinated. She was chasing the feeling now, but the goal had been perverted. She wasn’t chasing pleasure; she was chasing the obliteration of meaning that Selina had described.

“Think about Mark’s come on your face,” Selina hissed, applying pressure to Olivia’s nipple, pinching just shy of pain. “Think about how warm it will be. How it will smell. How you’ll have to hold your smile while it drips into your eye. That’s the scene. Now, make your body celebrate that. Now.”

With a choked, ragged cry that was half-sob, half-surrender, Olivia came. Her back arched, her thighs clamped around her wrist, her whole body seizing in a wave of intense, shuddering contractions that seemed to ripple out from her core. It was a real orgasm, wrenched from a place of profound conflict, its origins not in desire but in a brutal, coached dissociation.

She slumped forward, panting, tears cutting clean lines through her makeup. Selina stood, looking down at her, then at their reflections—the mentor and the broken pupil, the manipulator and the used.

“See?” Selina said, wiping her fingers on a discarded towel. “You can do it. It’s just a biological function. You divorced it from your self. That’s the skill.”

Olivia couldn’t speak. She just nodded, shuddering as she pulled her robe closed over the evidence of her lesson.

“Be on set at nine. Don’t think. Just operate.”

Selina left her there, in the hall of mirrors. The corridor outside was quiet, the main stages dark. She walked toward Chad’s office, the memory of Olivia’s forced climax mixing with the phantom sensations from Charlie’s desk, from Chad’s possession. She was becoming a vessel for other people’s corrupted lessons, a ghost teaching ghosts.

The light was on under Chad’s door. She pushed it open without knocking. He was on the phone, but he hung up quickly seeing her face.

“Well?”

“She’ll be ready,” Selina said, her voice flat. “Megan’s session is tomorrow afternoon. I want it in the black-drape room. No crew. Just me, her, and a handheld. Brooke broke in a controlled environment. Megan needs… something else.”

Chad studied her. “What else?”

“An audience of one. A witness, not a crew. It’s more intimate. More violating.” She met his gaze. “I need the key to the old storage closet. The one with the soundproofing.”

A slow smile spread across his face. He didn’t ask why. He understood. He tossed her a heavy, old-fashioned key. “It’s yours.”

She caught it, the metal cold in her palm. As she turned to leave, he spoke again.

“You’re building something here, Selina. Something real.”

She paused at the door, not looking back. “I’m dismantling things. Piece by piece.” It was the truest thing she’d said all night.

Back in her editing bay, she opened a new file. She began to type notes for Megan’s session. Subject: Megan Riordan. Goal: Erosion of curated control. Method: Isolated witness. Single chair. Handheld intimacy. Pursue the fracture. She typed until the sky outside the high warehouse windows began to lighten from black to a dingy, industrial gray.

The first sounds of the new day arrived: the rumble of a delivery truck, the shriek of the side door rolling up, the distant laugh of one of the twins—Brandy or Brooke, she couldn’t tell anymore. The machinery was waking up. She saved the file, closed the laptop, and sat in the lingering dark.

In the silence, she could still hear the wet, desperate sound of Olivia’s fingers, and the whispered lie that had made her come: It doesn’t mean a goddamn thing.

Selina almost believed it.
