Chapter 5: Chapter 5

The first thing I notice is the smell. The aroma curls through the room, thick with the promise of something indulgent, something that makes my stomach clench with a hunger I hadn’t realized I carried.

My eyelids flutter open, the soft fabric of Beth’s couch pressing against my cheek. The morning light spills through the half-drawn curtains, casting long, golden fingers across the worn wooden floor.

My fingers twitch against the soft fabric of Beth’s couch, the memory of last night’s dreams still clinging to my consciousness like morning dew. I can still feel the phantom weight of a collar around my neck, the cool metal pressing against my skin, the faint tug of a leash in Beth’s capable hands. The dream had been vivid, almost too real—Beth’s voice soft but firm, her neon-green eyes gleaming with something between affection and authority as she guided me through the apartment, her grip on the leash never wavering.

I sit up abruptly, my heart pounding. The dream lingers, its details sharp and unsettling. Beth was there, yes, but not as the nurturing landlord I know. In the dream, she was different—still warm, still protective, but with an edge of dominance I hadn’t seen before. And the collar. No. There's still time to avoid that fate. I can still be free. I can still be me. I just need to—

"Morning, sweetheart." Beth's voice cuts through my thoughts, warm and soft as she steps into the living room, a steaming mug in each hand.

I blink up at her, my fingers tightening around the edge of the couch. The dream lingers, its edges blurring with reality, but Beth looks exactly as she always does—her skin catching the morning light, her gentle eyes, bright with concern. The mugs in her hands are simple ceramic, the steam curling up from their surfaces, carrying the scent of something sweet and strong.

"Didn't mean to wake you" she says, setting one of the mugs down on the coffee table before me. "But you were stirring, and I figured you could use this." She gestures to the drink. "Coffee with a bit of honey. I know you like it dark and sweet.

Just like you."

The mug is warm in my hands, the ceramic smooth against my fingers. The coffee inside is rich and dark, the scent of honey curling up from the surface. It smells like home. It smells like safety.

I take a sip, the liquid sliding down my throat like liquid comfort. The warmth spreads through my chest, chasing away the last of the dream’s lingering unease.

Beth watches me, her neon-green eyes soft with concern. "You look like you didn’t sleep well." she observes, her voice gentle. "Did you have bad dreams?"

I hesitate, my fingers tightening around the mug. The dream wasn't bad, per se. It wasn't about monsters or danger or anything that made my skin crawl. If anything, it was the opposite: too warm, too safe, too *right*. That's what unsettled me. The way my body had relaxed into it, the way my mind had accepted it without question. The way I had *wanted* it.

Beth tilts her head, studying me. "Take your time. You have to ruminate on dreams when they are fresh, or you'll quickly forget them." she murmurs, reaching out to brush a strand of hair from my forehead. "They can windows into your deepest thoughts and desires. They bring things to the surface that you're trying hard to keep buried."

I swallow hard, the coffee suddenly too sweet on my tongue. "It wasn't a nightmare." I admit, searching for the right words. "It was just... different. It felt like the dream wasn't mine. It was like someone else's thoughts had been planted in my head."

I take another sip of coffee, the warmth spreading through me. "But I liked it. Much more than I should have." I admit.

"So, if I'm understanding you correctly, you were living someone else's dream for you. But to your surprise, you liked this dream. And it bothers you that you liked it so much?" She reaches out, her cool fingers brushing my cheek. "Am I understanding that correctly? What was it about?"

I hesitate, avoiding eye contact with her. The memory of the dream lingers, the phantom weight of the collar still pressing against my skin. "It was about... giving in. Letting myself be... controlled. Letting someone else take care of me. And... I liked it." I admit, my voice barely above a whisper. "I liked the way it felt to just... surrender."

For some reason Beth blushes and looks momentarily flustered. "That's not something to be ashamed of, sweetheart." she murmurs. "That's how men, er... *most* men are. It's natural to want to submit... that is, to let a woman t-take care of you."

I shake my head, my fingers tightening around the coffee mug. "But it wasn't just some woman, it..." I had to stop myself befor I told her that the person controlling me was Beth. I couldn't tell her that. I couldn't admit that I had dreamed of her collar around my neck. It was her voice guiding me through the apartment, her grip on my leash. I couldn't tell that I had *liked* it.

Beth's neon-green eyes searched mine, her amphibian skin rippling with concern. "It's alright, sweetheart. Your dreams are your own. If you feel the need to share, my ear is always open."

She gets up and prepares us plates of breakfast. The scent of fried eggs and buttered toast fills the air, and my stomach growls in response. Beth sets the plates down on the coffee table, her movements graceful and deliberate. She sits down next to me, her thigh pressing against mine, and hands me a fork.

"Eat." she says softly. "You need your strength."

I take a bite of the eggs, the yolk rich and creamy on my tongue. The toast is buttery and soft, the perfect complement to the savory eggs. I eat in silence, the warmth of Beth's presence seeping into me.

As I finish my meal, Beth watches me with those neon-green eyes, her expression unreadable.

There’s a quiet intensity to her gaze, something that makes my skin prickle with awareness. I set my fork down, the plate now empty, and wipe my mouth with the back of my hand.

“Better?” she asks, her voice soft but firm.

“Yeah. Thanks, Beth. It was delicious.” I admit.

She smiles, but it doesn’t quite reach her eyes. There’s something else there, something she’s holding back. I can feel it in the way her fingers tap lightly against her thigh, in the way her amphibian skin seems to ripple with tension.

“You’re welcome, sweetheart.” She reaches out, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.

”I should go." The words feel heavy on my tongue, but I force them out. ”I’ve got work soon.”

Beth’s neon-green eyes flicker with melancholy. She doesn’t move, doesn’t pull away, just studies me with an intensity that makes my chest tighten. Then abruptly, she nods. The gesture is simple yet cryptic. There’s a weight to it that lingers in the air between us.

“Of course.” she murmurs, her voice softer now, almost hesitant. “You should go. I know how your boss can be.”

I stand, the warmth of the couch fading as I straighten my clothes. Beth watches me as I open the door and step out. I pause in doorway and glance back at Beth.

"Be safe out there, sweetheart." she says. "And remember, my door is always open."

"I know. Thanks, Beth."

I step into the hallway, the door clicking shut behind me. The sound echoes through the empty corridor.

I head to my apartment to shower, brush my teeth and reflect on everything that happened. I'm an idiot, but even I can see that things were weird between Beth and I.

She was acting different. I thought it was just my imagination, but now I'm not so sure. She was... softer, somehow. More insistent. And that dream—God, that dream—it felt like something more than just a random nightmare. It felt like a message. But from who? And why?

I gather my things and head towards Ann's alley way.

The walk is short, but the air feels heavier today. The city's usual cacophony of demihuman chatter and clattering carts seems muffled, as if the world is holding its breath.

The storage room door is closed and Ema is standing outside with her arms crossed. I can hear voices inside, Ann's and some other women, but I can't tell what they're saying.

Ema doesn't even look at me, just stands there with her arms crossed, her tail flicking impatiently. The imp's red eyes are fixed on the door, her expression unreadable. I shift my weight from foot to foot, suddenly aware of how exposed I feel standing here in the open alleyway. The neon sign above the storage room flickers, casting jagged shadows across the damp pavement.

Finally, the door creaks open, and Ann steps out, flanked by two other women I don't recognize. One is a tall, muscular orc with dark green skin and tusks that curve up from her lower lip. The other is a slender elf with sharp features and piercing blue eyes. Both are dressed in professional business suits.

The orc woman's suit is tailored to accommodate her broad shoulders and thick arms, the fabric straining slightly at the seams. The elf wears a sleek black blazer over a crisp white blouse, her pointed ears adorned with delicate silver hoops. They exude an air of authority that makes my stomach clench.

The woman exchange polite goodbyes with Ann and the two strangers depart. Cartel members, if I'm not mistaken. High ranking one's at that. I looked at Ann in a new light. All this time I was under the assumption that she was a small time thug. Wait... The less I know the better. Nevermind, I saw nothing and heard less!

Ann's vertical-slitted eyes flicker toward me, her lips curling into a satisfied smirk. "Ah, there you are, puppy." She purrs, her voice dripping with amusement. "Right on time. I like that."

The storage room looks different from before. It was cleaner and better furnished.

The concrete floor had been covered with plush carpeting, and the bare bulbs replaced with warm, golden lighting. A leather couch sat against one wall, and a small table held a decanter of amber liquid and two crystal glasses. The air smelled of Ann's musky perfume.

Ann entered the room then turned to face me. "Front and center." She ordered. She didn't raise her voice or even her tone. Despite the fact that she was clearly in a good mood, I could tell she wouldn't tolerate hesitation.

I stepped forward immediately, my pulse quickening as I approached her. The carpet was soft under my shoes, the plush fibers muffling my footsteps. Ann's vertical-slitted eyes tracked my movements with predatory interest, her lips curling into a satisfied smirk as I stopped in front of her.

"Kneel." Her voice was soft but carried the weight of command. I hesitated for only a fraction of a second before sinking to my knees, the carpet thick beneath me. The position felt unnatural, my body resisting the submission even as my mind accepted it. Ann's fingers traced the line of my jaw, her claws gently scraping against my skin.

"Good boy." She murmured, her voice dripping with satisfaction.

"You're learning. That's good."

Ann's fingers linger on my jaw for a moment longer before she stepped back, her tail flicking with amusement. I preen at her praise but the moment is short lived.

"Now for the real test of submission. Kiss my boots, puppy."

My stomach dropped. I stared at the polished black leather of her boots, my mind recoiling even as my body remained perfectly still. This wasn't payment. This wasn't about the debt anymore.

This was something else entirely.

A hot wave of shame flooded my chest, tightening my throat. But beneath it, something colder stirred—a bizarre, placid acceptance. My body moved before my pride could mount a defense. I lowered my head, the sterile scent of polish filling my nose. My lips brushed the cool, smooth leather. The act was quick, impersonal.

I straightened up, my cheeks burning.

I obeyed, surprised by my submission. The last flicker of resistance guttered out like a dying candle.

“Very good.” Ann purred, the words buzzing with a deep, resonant pleasure. “Now, look at me.”

My eyes snapped up to meet hers. Her vertical pupils widened, becoming pools of liquid amber that seemed to swallow the room’s light. A wave of warmth washed over me, starting at the crown of my head and pouring down my spine. It was heavy, syrupy.

My muscles locked. I couldn’t blink, couldn’t look away. The world condensed to the hypnotic swirl of her eyes.

“That’s it,” her voice echoed, coming from everywhere and inside my skull at once. “Just fall. It’s so much easier, isn’t it? To stop fighting. To finally understand what you are.”

Her words wove through the warmth, seeping into the cracks of my consciousness. The paralyzing magic held me firm, a vessel waiting to be filled.

“You like this,” she whispered, the suggestion taking root as undeniable truth. “You like the clarity. The purpose. Being my toy isn’t a punishment. It’s a privilege. It’s safety.”

Images bloomed in my mind—not memories, but fabricated sensations. The brutal shove of a thug in a dark alley vanished, replaced by the solid, invisible shield of Ann’s influence. The gnawing anxiety of navigating the hostile city melted away under the cool certainty of her rules.

My own weakness, my human fragility, wasn’t a curse anymore. It was a fact. It was the reason I needed her.

“You are weak,” the voice-inside-her-voice coaxed, soothing and final. “You need my guidance. You crave my protection. It feels… right. This is your place.”

The conviction settled into my bones, weightless and absolute. Of course. It was so obvious now. The struggle, the fear, the loneliness—it all came from resisting this simple, beautiful truth.

A sharp snap sounded.

I blinked, the heavy warmth evaporating instantly. I was kneeling on the plush carpet, my knees aching slightly. Ann was looking down at me with a bland, businesslike expression.

“You’re zoning out on me, puppy. Long night?” she said, her tone casual, as if we’d just been chatting about the weather.

I shook my head, a vague confusion clouding my thoughts. “No, I’m… I’m fine.”

“Good. Get up. You’re going to be late for your shift.” She turned and walked toward the decanter, pouring herself a drink. “Ema will see you out.”

I pushed myself to my feet, my body moving automatically. A profound, unshakeable calm enveloped me. The usual pre-work dread was gone. The city outside didn’t seem so threatening. I felt… sheltered.

Ema opened the door, her impenetrable red gaze fixed on me. I walked out into the alley, the neon lights somehow less harsh, the shadows less deep.

My steps towards The Cauldron were steady, assured. For the first time in a year, a core-deep tension I’d carried since arriving in this world had simply vanished. I was weak. I needed protection.

And somehow, that was okay.
