Chapter 1: The Sanctuary Between Stones
The stench hit Elara first: musky, wrong, and laced with something acrid that burned her nostrils. She notched an arrow, the string biting into her calloused fingers as she scanned the mutated redwood forest. Twisted branches clawed at the sky, their unnatural angles a mockery of the trees she remembered from childhood, a lifetime ago. The deer had to be close. It was bigger than any she'd seen, its flesh bloated and discolored, but desperation gnawed at her empty belly.
Each step was deliberate, placing her weight carefully on the mossy ground, listening for the telltale snap of a twig. A crow cawed overhead, the sound grating and distorted. Elara ignored it, focusing on the faint, disturbed earth ahead. She pushed past a curtain of mutated ferns, their fronds thick and leathery, and froze.
The clearing was a pocket of unnatural calm. Ancient stones ringed the perimeter, humming with a low, resonant energy that vibrated in Elara's teeth. And in the center, a cabin, built of rough-hewn logs, smoke curling lazily from its chimney. She hadn't seen a structure, a sign of civilization, in years.
Before she could retreat, a figure emerged from the cabin. Kaelen. He was a wall of muscle and shadow, his dark hair pulled back from a face that looked carved from granite. His eyes, the color of the forest floor after a storm, locked onto hers, and a shiver ran down Elara's spine that had nothing to do with the cold. He moved with a predator's grace, silent and deliberate, until he stood between her and the deer carcass slumped near the treeline.
"You shouldn't be here," he said, his voice a low growl that resonated through the clearing. "Raiders are moving in. They'll be here soon."
Elara tightened her grip on the bow, distrust warring with a sudden, unwelcome flicker of hope. "I can handle myself."
He studied her, his gaze intense, and something shifted in his expression. "Maybe. But they're a pack. And this land…it's not safe for anyone alone anymore. I have a place. You can stay. For now."
