Chapter 1: Introduction
I loved this bar: the dim, intimate lighting; the multi-hued glow of neon signs filtering in through the stained-glass in the front window, casting geometric patterns onto the well-worn hardwood floors; the smell of stale ale and cigarettes framed with a hint of fresh lime, and sometimes, if you paid close attention, the mere whisper of Lysol.
As I approached the bar tonight, I couldn't help but size up my conquests for the evening. The joint was brimming with a variety of victims, but the usual suspects - Timid Timmy and his group of not-so-merry men - caught my eye near the back of the room. A cruel smile tugged at the corner of my lips.
"Jason! Hey, man—over here!" hollered Josh, my training partner and fellow gym rat, as he waved me over to our table.
His sprawling arms shifted through the air, making a beeline for me. As I squeezed through the maze of patrons, I noticed Timothy and his friends huddled together, nervously eyeing my stature. Fear and fascination leaked from their pores.
"Jason!" gushed hot, flushed Hannah, one of Timmy's entourage, a shy brunette I'd met a few times on my bar crawls. She playfully smacked my bicep.
"Want to play a game of pool with us? Tim here has been bragging about his new trick shot all night" – she rolled her eyes – "I call shenanigans."
Tim's pale cheeks grew beet red, as his eyes darted back and forth between Hannah and me. His lanky frame seemed to slump before my towering figure. The music of the bar seemed to dim around us, as I leaned in, whispering in Timothy's ear, "Sure, I'd love to.
I'm always up for a challenge." I gently patted his shoulder, my oversized hand almost enveloping it whole, a not-so-subtle reminder of our dynamic.
At the pool table, the weight of my presence hung thick in the air. My fingers drummed the worn-smooth surface of the table as I surveyed my new surroundings. The bar seemed just a bit smaller, my vision honed in on Timothy, my most interesting prey tonight.
As he sized up his shots, his hands trembled slightly, leaving chalky residue on the cue.
He matched my gaze in the mirror above the bar, then quickly looked away, focusing on the task at hand.
I leaned against the bar, feeling its cool, lacquered surface under my fingers, sipping my whiskey slowly. Each swallow allowed me to absorb the room, while also exhibiting my control and patience – two qualities that made me a force to be reckoned with, in all aspects of life.
The crack of pool balls filled the silence between us, each thud showcasing his nerves.
He scratched on his second shot, the cue ball rolling carelessly into a pocket. A bead of sweat trickled down his temple as he mumbled a quiet apology, avoiding eye contact.
I continued to assess him, my gaze following every twitch and micro-movement he made. He reminded me of a frightened bird, ready to take flight at the slightest sign of danger.
Josh and Hannah cheered and jeered from the sidelines, the atmosphere charged with excitement.
I strolled around the table, analyzing each potential shot with calculated precision. With a confident grin, I sunk three balls in a row, my fluid movements oozing power. The bar's patrons watched in awe, their conversations momentarily hushed, as the magnetic energy of our competition consumed them.
I purposefully brushed past Timothy as I made my way around the table. His rapid heartbeat pulsed, the tension between us crackling like electricity. The subtle scent of fearful perspiration wafted from him, triggering the hunter inside of me.
Confidence and arousal surged through my veins as the power dynamic became undeniably clear: I held the reins.
The night wore on, our game progressed, and my interest in Timothy deepened. He managed to land a few successful shots, but the visual evidence of my effect on him grew more and more apparent.
"Hey, Tim, you're up!" Hannah shouted from the sidelines.
A noticeable quiver in his voice broke the surface as I pondered my next move.
I leaned in closer, inhaling his scent, the sweetness of his exertion both enticing and rejuvenating, breathing life into the atmosphere. We were intwined in an intricate dance, a choreography of power and vulnerability, our eyes locked in a battle of wills.
"Well, Timothy," I drawled out slowly, my lips curving into a wicked smile, "perhaps it's time you show me exactly what you're capable of." The suggestion hung in the air, their eyes growing wide, their breaths shallow and staggered.
An undeniable tension rolled off Timothy. I could feel the energy between us shift. The other patrons faded into the background, as if they were merely extras in our unfolding drama.
Timothy's gaze bore into me, hesitation flickering just beneath the daring spark in his pupils. A faint blush spread across his cheeks, betraying an unanticipated allure in his performance. As he picked up his cue, his knuckles brushed against mine, igniting a spark of curiosity.
I maintained my enigmatic smile, flicking my gaze between his eyes and his trembling hand.
"Alright, Jason, here goes," Timothy murmured, as he prepared to take his shot. His concentration narrowed, and with a surprising poise, he sank the ball in the corner pocket, a momentary triumph gleaming in his expression.
The bar erupted in celebration, shattering the intense silence and reminding me of our surroundings. I clasped his shoulder firmly, acknowledging his achievement, as I further contemplated the effect we had on one another.
All eyes in the bar remained glued to our silent competition, the allure of our forbidden dance and the spark of intrigue between us growing stronger with every strike. Timothy, the seemingly weak and unassuming man, had shown a glimmer of the intensity that hid beneath his fragile exterior. He wasn't just a victim in this game of provocations any longer.
Just as I was about to reply, the crackling atmosphere in the bar was interrupted by the shrill ringing of a cell phone, the spell abruptly broken as the moment dissipated into the air.
Reluctantly, I returned to my seat and continued engaging with those around me. Our pool game was forgotten as the night progressed and my attention became divided amongst the people who surrounded me. However, I couldn't shake the curiosity that had lodged itself within my mind like a splinter, the interest now firmly in place and demanding satisfaction.
Timothy had revealed himself to be a man of surprising tenacity and a quiet spirit, a curious combination that piqued my senses and left me wanting more.
I extend my hand prompting the smaller guy to shake it. "Jason," I say with a hint of pride, enough to leave no doubt that I own this bar and those who inhabit it.
The tension in the room has subsided, and I've moved on from my game with Timothy. The night wears on, and most of us scatter as it ticks closer to 2 am. But that magnetic pull between Timothy and me made me extend an invitation for a workout at the gym - something I instantly regretted. Timid men, especially the self-conscious ones, were rarely my cup of tea.
