Chapter 1: Introduction
The scent of damp earth and pine needles filled Emily's nostrils as she stumbled through the dense foliage, a soft breeze rustling leaves overhead and skittering loose twigs across the path. Dappled sunlight pierced the leafy canopy, casting ever-shifting patterns of light and shadow on her naked skin. It made a grotesque mockery of her usual modesty, but the girls couldn't afford to be picky. Not now, not here.
Emily tried to keep her mind off the tickling whispers of the wind against her exposed flesh, focusing instead on the path before them, winding deeper into the mysterious forest. Sarah walked alongside her, her chestnut hair sticking to her flushed cheeks, eyes scanning the unfamiliar terrain. They could only hope they'd find civilization before sunset.
The silence in the woods pressed in on them like a living thing—until it didn't. Footsteps crunched on the dried leaves, and the brush nearby stirred as if parting to make way for a figure.
Out of the undergrowth stepped James, cheeks reddened, hair slightly mussed, eyes darting between the two women in their vulnerable state. For a moment, Emily worried that their situation had frightened him off.
"Are you two alright?" James asked hesitantly, as if approaching nervous doe.
Emily and Sarah exchanged a glance before Emily cleared her throat nervously. "Well, as you can see, our, uh, car broke down up the road, and we decided to cut through the forest to find help.
But we had a bit of an accident," Sarah blurted out, ending the awkward silence between them.
James' eyebrows furrowed in concern, eyes dropping to their bare forms for a moment before snapping back up to their faces. "You, um, need clothes. Where's your car?" He offered, then quickly added, "And I can help you find it if you want."
Sarah and Emily shared another glance before the latter nodded slightly, her cheeks coloring even more. "We'd appreciate that.
We were just trying to find our way back," Emily replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "We're just not sure how far we are from our car."
James glanced back the way he came and nodded, determination creeping into his expression. "Well, you don't have to go any further like that—I have a blanket in my backpack. It won't be much, but it's—something, at least."
As James rummaged in his backpack, Sarah leaned toward Emily.
"He seems nice," she whispered, mischief glinting in her eyes. Emily rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress her amused smile. James may have been timid at first, but he proved helpful and kind when they needed it.
James straightened up and carefully draped the blanket over Emily and Sarah, maintaining a respectable distance. If anyone else stumbled upon them in this secluded forest, they'd surely have questions. The trio had to be mindful of appearances even as they searched for the way back to civilization.
Emily and Sarah, embracing the blanket, followed nervously behind James as he led them through the woods.
