Chapter 1: Breaking the Silence Over Drinks

Stefan traced a slow line through the condensation on his beer bottle, watching the water bead and fall. The amber lamp above the booth made the glass glow like something molten, and he thought about how many men had sat in this same corner, nursing the same nervous silence.

A warm, calloused hand brushed his. Just the edge of a palm, a thumb sliding across his knuckles with deliberate, grounding pressure. Stefan's hand stilled beneath the touch.

"Hey." The voice was low, dusted with amusement. "You're gripping that bottle like it owes you money."

Stefan looked up. Diego's deep-set eyes crinkled at the corners as he laughed, a low, infectious sound that somehow cut through the bar's ambient chatter and made everything else go distant. Olive skin, broad chest, dark hair curling from the open collar of his linen shirt. The man was practically radiating warmth.

"I'm fine," Stefan said. His voice came out rougher than he meant, so he cleared his throat and tried again. "Just, uh, thinking."

"Thinking's dangerous in a place like this." Diego tilted his head, studying him with open curiosity, no judgment in it. "You're new here. First time?"

Stefan's thumb twitched under the weight of Diego's hand, still resting loose over his knuckles. He should pull away. He didn't.

"Yeah. First time." He swallowed, forcing himself to meet those dark eyes. "I was hoping... looking for a recommend...a good gym nearby. I'm new to the area."

Diego's smile widened, and he leaned closer. The scent of his cedar and musk cologne drew Stefan's attention, but those forearms--hairy over some impressive muscle was what caught his real attention. Stefan was, after all, first and foremost a gym rat. But since moving to this neighborhood, the gym wasn't... enough. And this guy... Even in the warmth of the bar, Stefan could feel the heat radiating off that broad chest, and his breath caught in his throat.

"There's a decent one about ten minutes from here," Diego said, his voice dropping to something intimate. "But I could show you better. If you're interested."

Stefan's hand turned under Diego's, palm to palm, calloused fingers sliding together.
What the hell am I doing? he thought. His heart hammered against his ribs, loud enough he was sure Diego could feel it through the pressure of their joined hands. Fuck! This feels good!

"I'm interested," Stefan said. The words came out easier than he expected.

Diego's fingers tightened, just slightly, a question asked in pressure alone. And something in Stefan's chest flipped over.

He pulled his hand back. Fast. The motion knocked his elbow against the booth's edge and his beer bottle teetered, sloshed a pale ring onto the scarred wood. Heat flooded up his neck and into his ears.

"Sorry. I, uh." Stefan wiped his palm on his jeans, as if Diego's touch had left something behind. "Sorry."

Diego sat back. He didn't look wounded or annoyed, just watched him with those crinkled eyes, drinking something dark from a short glass. His smile stayed, softer now at the edges.

"No apologies," he said. "Nobody's keeping score here."

Stefan stared at the condensation ring he'd made on the table. His heart was still pounding from the touch itself, from how natural it had felt, palm to palm, and that was the problem. He'd walked in here to ask about a gym. Twenty minutes later he was holding hands with a stranger in a dim booth and his whole body had leaned in like it knew something he didn't.

"I haven't done this," he said finally. The words came out low, almost lost under the clink of glass at the bar. "Any of this. The hand thing, the... whatever that was."

"The whatever," Diego repeated, and his laugh came out quiet this time, a warm rumble rather than the booming thing from before. He turned his glass slowly on the table. "For what it's worth, you didn't seem scared. You seemed hungry."

Stefan's jaw worked. He wanted to argue and couldn't.

"Look," Diego went on, gentle, "we can talk about gyms all night. I'll give you three recommendations and my number for the good one. Or you can finish that beer, and we just talk. No hands, no pressure." He slid the glass aside and rested those big hands flat on the table, open, palms up, deliberately within view and nowhere near Stefan's skin. "Your pace, big guy. All of it your pace."

Stefan looked at those open palms, then at his own beer, and lifted it. He took a long swallow and set it down harder than necessary.

"Talk," he said. "For now."

"Talk," Stefan repeated, and he was already losing track of which words were his and which were just noise. The bar's chatter pressed in through the dim, but Diego's presence carved out a space around the booth that felt almost private.

"Alright." Diego settled back, easy as anything. "What kind of lifting do you do? Please don't say cardio."

The laugh that escaped Stefan surprised him. It came out rusty, underused. "Powerlifting. Squat, deadlift, bench. The holy trinity."

"Big numbers?"

"Big enough."

Diego grinned at that, and under the table, he shifted his leg. The contact was incidental at first, the press of a knee against Stefan's. Then Diego left it there, warm through the denim.

Stefan's breath caught. His own knee stayed perfectly still, but he didn't pull back either. He felt the pressure travel up his thigh like a current, settling somewhere low and deep.

"You're tense," Diego observed, not unkind. "Carry that in the gym too?"

At the top of a max attempt, I carry everything, Stefan almost said. Instead he let out a slow breath and watched his knee press back. Just a millimeter. Barely anything.

Diego's eyes flicked down, then back up. His smile deepened.

"Still just talking?"

"Still." Stefan's voice held. "But I'm not scared anymore."

The dim light caught the crinkle at the corner of Diego's eye. His knee stayed pressed against Stefan's, a steady, grounding presence, and neither of them moved to break it.
